Reading/Writing ‘paper’ task: Please create a text map of The Daughter of Buk Ettemsuch – making sure you just pick out the bare bones to tell the story as simply as possible. Add nouns, verbs and adverbs to your brainstorm. Aim for a further 10 at least. 2. Select at least 5 words from the exception word list that could be used to describe your chosen character. 3. Use a thesaurus to up level at least 10 of the words from your brainstorm. 4. By now you should have at least 35 words, if not more! I would like you to create a plan so that you can write a character description. Please use the boxed up plan to organise your vocabulary and your ideas. 5. Finally, please write your character description using the same SLOW writing criteria as last week. Push yourself to try more of the criteria and include as much of your vocabulary as possible, making sure you get the balance right (it needs to be interesting but not OTT as your words will lose their impact).

Voyagers Tasks Week Beginning 11.5.20

READING AND WRITINGTasks set on Reading Eggspress:

MATHSSkills Maintenance: Remember to do a little of this each day xx)As I set you quite a lot last week, and because this week’s lessons are quite full on, I have just extended last week’s Mathletics skills assignments to run over this week too. This will enable you to complete anything you have started, go over anything you found tricky, or plug any gaps in your understanding that you may have discovered.If you like, you could have a go at the Friday Challenge I found on White Rose (Year 5 Summer Term Week 3 W/C 4th May). Please send me any pics – even if it’s just to show off your baking skills…

Feedback from last week’s maths tasks was positive – woo hoo! You seemed to like the White Rose videos because you like being talked to - the MyMaths lessons (although very good) require a fair bit of reading alongside learning the maths, and this can be a bit much if the maths is challenging. So, we’ll persevere with the White Rose videos and tasks, and practise the new skills as usual using Power Maths books. I hope everyone is ok with that! Two things to note:

1. I have written the instructions in numbered steps according to the White Rose lessons, BUT you don’t have to complete everything in each step in one session - there is quite a bit and you will need thinking/processing time. ALSO REMEMBER you can go back and forth as you need to.

2. I have put the Power Maths screenshots onto one Word document for each year group instead of posting them straight onto the website. This will make it easier for you to find the ones you need. I have realised the website does not include the titles I give to your resources for easy reference - this must have made them hard to find, although nobody has complained about it, so thank you for that !

OK, let’s get going…As you already know, you need to search for ‘White Rose Home Learning’ and you will then see this:

Click/tap onto your year group, and proceed as follows…

YEAR 4Lessons: Dividing by 10 and 10, plus a bit of recapping..I’m afraid you will have to jump about a little bit this week as we have bits and bobs to finish off and White Rose haven’t done them in the same order as we have. It’s also important you make sure you are on the right weeks. When you get to the Year 4 page you will see the image below…As you can see, Week 1 and Week 2 are mentioned twice. You need ‘Week 1’ and ‘Week 2’ that are at the very bottom without any dates (shown here by my big, red arrow!!)

1. Please return to Week 1 and go to Lesson 5 (Dividing 1 digit by 10). Follow the lesson, complete the tasks (downloading them from the site and remembering to check and comment on your answers). After that, please complete the Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks before working on the questions that start on p.129 in your 4B book.

2. It’s Week 2 next! Please complete Lesson 1 (Divide 2-digits by 10) and the activities etc, then practise with Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks before working on the questions that start on p.132 in your 4B book.

3. Same week but scoot through to Lesson 5 (Divide 1 or 2 digits by 100). Do the usual before Power Mathsing for p. 144 (remembering of course to do the Discover and Think Together tasks first).

4. I would then like you to go to ‘Summer Term w/c 20th April’ and follow all the lessons from 1-4. Some will recap what you have learnt over the past few weeks, some will be a new way of doing things you already know. Work through at your own pace, and don’t do it all in one go – you will get muddled and overloaded. After that, please do the End of Unit check on p. 150 in your Power Maths book.

5. PARENTS -if this is too much, please let me know. The work from steps 1-3 isn’t quite enough for a week. Step 4 may tip it over, but the lessons cover a variety of skills for consolidation so it was difficult to find a cut off point!

YEAR 5Lessons: Rounding, ordering, comparing decimals, understanding percentages.

1. Ok, so you need Week 2 without the date…

Please start with Lesson 1 - Rounding Decimals, as you can see above, completing the activities, checking your answers, considering errors etc. After that, please find the Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks for Unit 11, Lesson 9, complete these and the Power Maths tasks beginning on p. 154 of your 5B book.

2. Lesson 2 – Order and Compare Decimals next, do the usual! Practise with Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks for Unit 11 Lesson 7, questions in your book from p. 148. After that it’s Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks for Unit 11 Lesson 8, questions in your book from p. 151.

3. Lesson 3 is the big one! Understand percentages! Whoop Whoop!! Do the usual then practise your new found skills with Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks for Unit 11 Lesson 10, questions in your book from p.157.

4. Lesson 4 – Percentages as Fractions and Decimals. As above, with Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks for Unit 11 Lesson 11, questions in your book from p.160.

5. Lesson 5 – Equivalent FDP – take your time, think, go back, practise, make sure you feel ok before moving onto Power Maths Discover and Think Together tasks for Unit 11 Lesson 12, questions in your book from p.163.

6. That was a full on week of quite complex work!! You can relax now and put your feet up – you will dream FDP if you close your eyes…!! Oh, and I will give you a chance to go back to it next week if it all

feels a bit much… and if it hasn’t felt too much, then you will have a chance to crack on with some more!

HISTORYThe BIG QUESTION…

Why did the Victorians get involved in Benin, and what were the effects on the Benin people?

In order to answer the BIG QUESTION, you will need to do some reading. Please read the text in the ‘Victorian Involvement in Benin’ document. There are three levels of difficulty (* being the most simple, to *** the most detailed). Pick the level you are most comfortable with, read the text and answer the questions (you don’t need to send me that bit, but you do need to complete it as the questions are designed to make sure you have gathered all the facts).

One important aspect of history is to learn how one event can lead to another. It’s also important to think about what you learn, and form your own opinions based on the facts. For this reason, I would like you to create a timeline/text map of the events you have just read about. Please include all relevant dates and details. It may help you to highlight these in the text first.

You may find some of the things you read quite surprising and shocking, I know I did. Life today is not perfect, but the British

attitude towards other countries was very different in the Victorian times. We will explore our views on this more closely next week.

SCIENCE

This week, I’m handing things over to you! I would like you to work scientifically to plan and undertake an investigation of your own choice. You can find out about whatever you like, making sure you provide evidence that you have addressed the following criteria:

Year 5 Planning different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising

and controlling variables where necessary Explore and talk about their ideas; asking their own questions about scientific

phenomena; and analysing functions, relationships and interactions more systematically. Reporting and presenting findings from enquiries, including conclusions, causal

relationships and explanations of and degree of trust in results, in oral and written forms such as displays and other presentations

Draw conclusions based on their data and observations, use evidence to justify their ideas, and use their scientific knowledge and understanding to explain their findings.

Pupils should read, spell and pronounce scientific vocabulary correctly.
