WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, as we come to the empty tomb seeking forgiveness, help us to reorder our priorities so that we will always put Christ first. Forgive us when we fail to make your love evident in our lives. Help us to remember the costly act of Jesus Christ that led to victory over sin and death. Remind us that in Christ we have the gift of a new beginning, freed from guilt and graced by love. Breathe into us that resurrection breath. We pray this in the name of our Lord and Savior, the risen Christ!

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* RESPONSE Hymnal No. 106, Verse 1 Alleluia No. 1

Alleluia, Alleluia! Give thanks to the risen Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia! Give praise to his name. Jesus is Lord of all the earth. He is the King of creation. Alleluia…

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE

People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., “The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

SERMON “Fear of Hope” Rev. Richard S. Hong

OFFERTORY Will C. MacFarlane

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Pastor: Eternal and ever-living God...

. . . who forever sing to the glory of your name.

SANCTUS 568 (choir and congregation) Weaver

Pastor: Holy God, in Your mercy . . .

. . . Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Pastor: We take this bread and wine and joyfully celebrate this Holy Sacrament. ... And now, with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray:

People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hail to Thee, true Body sprung from the Virgin’s womb. The same that on the cross was hung and bore for man the bitter doom. Thou whose side was pierced and flowed both with water and with blood; Suffer us to taste of Thee in our life’s last agony. O kind, O loving One. O Jesus, Mary’s Son.

CUP: Please wait until all are served, symbolic of your corporate belonging together in the body of Christ. Grape juice is the fruit of the vine used in our celebration of the sacrament.

COMMUNION MOTETS

In Joseph’s Lovely Garden arr. Dickenson

In Joseph’s lovely garden The Lord Christ’s tomb was made And there His broken body to rest was gently laid. A great rock strongly sealed it, the Death might have full sway; But God sent down His angel to roll the stone away.

When dawn was faintly breaking across the garden fair, Three women entered weeping, bearing spices rare. Then spake the guardian angel in shining raiment bright, He who ye seek is risen, and death is vanquished quite!

O angel of the garden descend to us today, And comfort all our sadness and drive death’s fear away. We all are sorrow laden, speak to our hearts we pray, He whom ye love is risen, and lives with Christ alway!”

O Jesus, blest Redeemer, all praise to Thee we bring, No power of death could hold Thee, Our Saviour, Lord, and King! As Thou hast risen all glorious, May we one day arise, O’er sin and death victorious, In Thy blest Paradise.

Ave Verum Philip Stopford

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Isaiah 25:6-9 (NRSV)

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. 7And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. 8Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 9It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Mark 16:1-8 (NRSV)

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” 4When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had

already been rolled back. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” 8So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
