BROADWATER SCHOOL
Y7-10 Sports Awards winners – congratulations to these students for their dedication to sport
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I have to say how pleased and impressed I have been in the way our new year 7
have quickly become part of the school community and settled in so well. As I write
this I am looking forward to our Meet the Tutor Evening for year 7 parents, taking
place this week. We have already received positive comments from the students
and their ex-teachers when they came in for the afternoon to review the transition
to secondary school. It is good to know that our transition processes are working
well. If you do have any further comments we are always looking at how we can
improve this process still further.
This half term has been as busy as ever. One of the highlights, as always, was the
Year 11 Road User Awareness Day which delivers an important message about road
safety to our students, many of whom will be driving in a few years’ time.

Our sports teams have been very busy as well with some notable wins against local
opposition, more information inside this newsletter.
A new development this year was the introduction of Diversity Week. This was a
week-long celebration of diversity commencing on 29th September 2014. It was the
first time we had attempted anything on this scale and it was very successful.
Students were involved in a variety of activities both in lessons, in workshops and in
assemblies.
Year 9 took part in workshops with Alison from
the charity “Just Different”. Alison is disabled as a
result of her mother taking thalidomide during
her pregnancy and as a result Alison was born
with short arms. We had James Dawson in school
from the organisation “Stonewall”. He held a very
engaging assembly with the whole school and
then broke off into small workshops for year 8.
We had 2 sets of visitors in school: Emma from the Surrey branch of the National
Autistic Society joined us to do some workshops with year 7 and a small group from
a local charity “Step by Step” to talk about homelessness. This group ran an
engaging assembly with the whole school and then worked with year 10 students in
small workshop groups, throughout the day. It is important that our students are
able to understand that people are all different and that minority groups should be
accepted within society. I was very pleased with the positive response of our
students. There is no doubt that the values of respect and tolerance are seen in and
around school on a daily basis by our students of the school.
Finally, I would like to remind you that as well all the information for parents on the
school website (www.broadwater.surrey.sch.uk), we also post tweets on our Twitter
account and information on our Facebook page, both of which are linked to the
homepage of the school website. These social networking sites will provide you
with the most up to date news and events taking place in school, alongside the usual
ParentMails.
Wishing you all the best and next time I write it will be nearly Christmas, only 62
days to go!
Best Wishes

PE Department News Well done to the Yr 8 Rounders team After finishing top of their league in the summer and then winning their knock out matches to win their age group, the Year 8 girls’ team were nominated and then shortlisted for Guildford’s Sports Awards Junior Sports Team of the Year held at Surrey University with Mr Cook and Miss Palmer. They were in the top 3 of all the teams nominated but just missed out on the award. Despite not winning it remained a very enjoyable evening and showed how successful they were last year. Well done to the girls. GO for Gold Girls Sports Conference On 18th September Miss Palmer attended a sports conference with Year 10 girls Katie Pritchard and Rachel Tidey held at St Catherine’s School in Bramley. This national conference was attended by schools from across the country. The students were treated to several seminars led by Olympians Tanni Grey-Thompson and Anna Watkins. They investigated sports careers such as coaching and physiotherapy and were also spoken to by Tamsin Greenway of England Netball and Surrey Storm. The students found the day inspiring and left them wanting more. RFU All Schools
Students designing the rugby kit after meeting Jonny Wilkinson
As part of the school’s work with the RFU and Guildford Rugby Club, Mr Cook took Liam Gadd, Hugo Lawrence, David Voller and Robbie Sturgess to Streatham and Croydon RFC to design a new Broadwater Rugby kit. The day was spent with Canterbury kit designers and the students got to try on Rugby shirts from all over the UK before coming up with a concept for their own design. A couple of hours into the day they were treated to a surprise visit by World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson who spent time talking to the students about sport and rugby. He also reiterated the core values of the game and to think about them in their designs. The students are now looking forward to receiving the kit they designed arrive at school in February and then to play their first game while wearing it. Football The teams have had mixed results so far, with most teams having played 2 matches so far. The year 7s have performed very well and have drawn their two games with Glebelands and Guildford County with the last kicks of the game to remain undefeated so far.
The Year 8 boys are still looking for their first win but are scoring lots of goals; Harvey Penton Stewart and Tommy Stephens playing particularly well.
The Year 9 team are also looking for their first win but have probably played the hardest teams in the leagues so will be looking to improve after half term. Josh Burt and Jo Jo Fyffe have both played very well for them.
The year 10 team have won both their matches convincingly and are looking to continue this good form. Goals from Jay Lawson and Scott Mackenzie are helping them along with good defensive performances from Jack Park, Oliver Spencer and Brent Savage.
Year 11 have continued to improve over the half term and are determined to qualify from their group to the knock out stages in their final year. They built on their team performance against Glebelands to win convincingly at Woolmer Hill. Good individual performances from Jack Nichols, Matt Savedra and Rory Sellick have really helped set them apart. Good luck to all teams after half term. Guildford Rugby Club Leaders
Wednesday 15th October saw several of the students help deliver a rugby tournament for primary schools held at Guildford Rugby Club. The leaders looked after groups of primary children and helped coach during the festival. Despite the poor weather they remained positive the entire afternoon and were rewarded with guest appearances from two Harlequin players Dave Ward and Luke Wallace who joined some of them for a photo to say thanks for helping running the tournament. Well done to all the leaders who made the event such a success. Rugby
Year 7 Rugby Team
Rugby coaches from Titan Coaching have been in the PE department helping deliver expert rugby lessons to both boys and girls in years 7, 8 and 9. The students have really enjoyed this coaching and I am pleased that so many of them are now also beginning to come to training on Thursday lunch times and after school. The year 7, 8 and 9 teams have all had matches cancelled but with these regular training sessions they will be well prepared for their next match. If you are interested in playing please come along or speak to a member of the PE department. Mr Cook, Head of PE
Interhouse Sport This year’s Inter House Sports Competition has already started and it looks as though it’s going to be a close competition. Inter House football for girls and boys took place 2 weeks ago. This week saw Inter house Basketball for the girls and Rugby for the boys. The scores so far are:- Pegasus = 410 Aquila = 495 Phoenix = 435 Coming soon we have Inter House Basketball for boys and Netball for girls. All students are invited to take part in Inter House sport. They just need to turn up to the P.E department at lunchtimes the week it is on. We held a Sports Council meeting at the start of this term. One representative from each form came along to the meeting. These sports reps each have a pin on badge in the colour of their house which they received in House assemblies. It was a very productive meeting which gave us some new ideas for the year ahead. Our 2 Young Ambassadors for Sport are Lai Yang Tang and David Voller. They have helped update the notice boards several times already and will be attending a leadership conference after half term. Please remember you are able to follow P.E in school on twitter. The address is @sportsatbs Please feel free to TWEET! Last week we held the Annual Year 2 Multi Skills Festival which was attended by Loseley Fields, Moss Lane, Chilworth Infants and Farncombe Infants schools. Approximately 160 Year 2 pupils took part in the festival. Pupils participated in multi skills based activities which ran on a circuit basis, ensuring all pupils had a go at lots of different sports stations. Around 30 Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students from Broadwater were leaders on each of the stations and showed the younger students what to do and helped to coach them. The Young Leaders did an amazing job and had an excellent rapport
with the younger students. They were excellent ambassadors for the school. The year 2 pupils thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and we hope to run the event again next year. All students are invited to become Young Leaders from all year groups. Any students interested in being involved in leadership work need to see Mrs Fowler for details. Students who regularly help with leadership work have the opportunity to purchase a special Young Leader T – Shirt. The idea is our Young Leaders stand out even more when doing leadership work. If you would like a T – Shirt please see Mrs Fowler for a letter.
Well done to the Year 9 netball team who so far this term have beaten Rodborough and St Catherine’s schools. Congratulations to the Broadwater Cricket Academy who have been nominated for an award at the Chance to Shine National Cricket Awards. Last week we had a film crew come into school and interview students involved in the committee. They asked questions regarding what the school had been doing with the cricket academy and why we should win the award. The committee, Mrs Fowler and Mr Cook will be attending the Awards ceremony in November at the Kia Oval. Fingers crossed that we do well! After half term we will be having a cricket coach come into school on a Monday lunchtime to do ‘nets’ practice in the sportshall. All years, girls and boys welcome! We have 2 girls’ cricket tournaments next half term. See Mrs Fowler if you’d like to play!
Years 8 and 9 are very lucky at the minute to be receiving Rugby coaching from Titans Rugby Club in lessons. The coaches are really good and students are enjoying it. They are also doing some sessions at lunch and after school, which all students are invited to.
Finally, can I please ask that all students keep their eyes on the P.E notice boards which have all details of when clubs are running and when fixtures are taking place. Students just need to come to the P.E department to take part. At the minute we have Netball Club every Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes. Also, girls’ Football and girls’ Basketball - just come along! Mrs K Fowler, PE Department
Ex-Student Update
Rosie Ford - Left Broadwater in 2008
At Broadwater, I was a prefect and later made House Captain for Pegasus. For my chosen GCSEs I took graphic design, art and ICT. Following the successful completion of my GCSEs, at the end of year awards I was given a prize for graphic design and awarded the Governors Prize for Creativity. I then went on to study at Godalming College, where I took A levels in English literature and graphic design and a BTEC in business studies.
After the first year at college, I decided that I wasn't going to apply to go to University and instead I would look for job opportunities that would provide training and use the A levels I was working towards. Shortly
after completing my A levels I was lucky enough to be offered a two year apprenticeship at Waverley Borough Council in their human resources team. During my apprenticeship I took a NVQ in business administration, attended a variety of training courses and represented the Council in a national competition. Towards the end of the first year of my apprenticeship I applied for and was offered a permanent role as an administration assistant at the Council.
The four years I have spent working at Waverley Borough Council have given me the confidence and experience necessary to apply for higher level jobs and I have now been offered an officer level role at Guildford Borough Council.
My advice to current students is that even when it seems difficult it is important to remember that all the studying and hard work will pay off and will help to ensure that you have the kind of life that you want. Rosie Ford

Year 11 Road User Awareness Day – Friday October 3rd 2014
This was an exciting and informative day for our year 11 students. The event was
planned with the very able help of Trevor Coldman of the Farnham Fire Service who
co-ordinated the inputs of the three services; Fire, Police and St. John’s ambulance.
The experiences during the day were focussed on providing our students with an in-
depth understanding of Road User Awareness. Excellent presentations were given
by all three services providing an insight to their roles and responsibilities in road
traffic accident (RTA) incidents. Some of the video presentations were hard hitting
and made real impact but if they save on life or serious accident then the whole day
was worthwhile.
The students really enjoyed taking part and playing the roles of the services in a
reconstructed RTA. This included dressing in appropriate services clothing, taking
the part of Fire Brigade, Police and St John ambulance personnel, riding on their
vehicles and dealing with the accident. Some students were also given the roles of
press reporters; taking photographs and writing brief incident accounts.
In the afternoon all the services took part in a full reconstruction with commentary
of the unfolding event being provided by Trevor Coldman. The extraction of the
casualties included the removal of the glass, doors and roof of the vehicle. The day
was very thought provoking and hopefully inspired and prepared our students for
their future on the roads.
It was certainly enjoyed with some really positive and well considered feedback
from the students
Our thanks to the services for an outstanding day.

Guildford Book Festival Author Event
In conjunction with the Guildford Book Festival,
we were fortunate to have award-winning
author and illustrator Dave Shelton visit our
school to conduct writing workshops with some
of our Year 8 students.
Dave Shelton won the prestigious 2013 Branford
Boase Award for his debut novel ‘A Boy and a
Bear In a Boat’. This book, also shortlisted for
last year’s Carnegie Medal, was enjoyed by
Broadwater’s Carnegie Shadowing Reading
Group.
Dave Shelton also used his illustrator’s skills to write the comic strip book, ‘Good
dog, Bad Dog’.
His book ‘Thirteen Chairs’ set in a mysterious haunted house, comprises thirteen scary ghost stories to send shivers down the spine! Full of atmosphere, this intriguing collection is guaranteed to chill you to your bones! Several of our students have read and enjoyed this book.
With this particular book in mind, Dave spoke to the students about writing and the importance of setting the scene , characters and plot to provide a chilling atmosphere.
The students were then asked to begin writing their own stories with a spooky twist. They were asked to try and build tension into their stories and to create suspense and fear.
The students set about their task with enthusiasm and some very good stories, (which we all shared with each other) were produced.
Dave Shelton’s visit inspired many of the writers among our students and also promoted the sheer enjoyment of reading for pleasure.
