BRUCE  HOUSTON  Assemblages  &  Constructions

May  24  –  June  21,  2014

Lora  Schlesinger  Gallery  presents  Assemblages  &  Constructions  by  Bruce  Houston.  The  show  is  the  artist’s  third  solo  exhibition  with  the  gallery.    The  show  is  on  view    May  24,  2014  through  June  21,  2014.  The  opening  reception  will  be  Saturday  May  31,  2014  from  5  –  7  pm.    Bruce  Houston  playfully  combines  manufactured,  traditionally  non-‐artistic  materials  to  construct  unusual  sculptures  that  create  a  sense  of  intrigue.  Some  of  them  are  humorous,  some  of  them  are  mischievous,  but  they  all  have  one  thing  in  common:  they  use  familiar  conventional  household  items  and  toys  to  form  cunning  original  works  of  art  that  redefine  their  function.  Though  they  retain  their  physical  identity,  he  gives  them  a  new  life,  forever  changing  one’s  perceptions  of  the  items.  Hand  painted  reproductions  of  iconic  paintings  by  Mondrian  and  Frank  Stella  are  mounted  on  toy  semi-‐trucks.  The  juxtaposition  of  materials  takes  two  existing  ideas  and  recreates  reality  in  a  distorted  form.  The  handpicked  items  are  carefully  composed  to  produce  unique  works  of  art  characteristic  of  Bruce  Houston’s  clever  sense  of  humor  and  of  his  one-‐of-‐a-‐kind  aesthetic.      Bruce  Houston  has  exhibited  in  museums  and  galleries  nationwide  including:  Neuberger  Museum  of  Art,  New  York;  Addison  Gallery  of  American  Art,  New  Hampshire;  Palm  Springs  Desert  Museum,  Palms  Springs;  The  Chrysler  Museum,  Virginia;  Allan  Stone  Gallery,  New  York;  Gracie  Mansion  Gallery,  New  York;  and  Louis  Stern  Gallery,  Beverly  Hills.    His  work  is  also  in  prominent  collections  such  as  the  Smithsonian  Art  Institute  in  Washington,  D.C.  and  the  Mondrian  Foundation,  the  Netherlands.
