Attendance Information

• Habitual Truant-A child who is absent for 5 consecutive days, or 7 days in one month, or 12 days in a school year without a legitimate excuse.

• Chronic Truant-A child who is absent for 7 consecutive days, 10 days in a month or 15 days in a year without a legitimate excuse.

Truancy/Class CutsThese are excused: Personal illness of the student; Illness in the student’s family; Death in the family; Quarantine for contagious disease; Religious reasons Pre-approved vacation College visits Court/ Probation

These are unexcused:• babysitting • hair appointments • car or traffic problems • missing the bus • driving tests• employment interviews • Senior "Skip Day"• oversleeping • Monday after Prom • weekend shopping • attending non-school related events• birthdays• outside employment, unless through

Dress Code Highlights1. Dresses, skirts and shorts must be

knee-length (including those worn to award ceremonies, class presentations, etc.). Leggings and tights are not considered a pant alone and must be accompanied by a knee-length short , dress or skirt.

2. Pants are not permitted to be ripped, shredded, torn or damaged. Pants must be worn at the waist.

3. Students are not permitted to wear any type of hat, head wrap or bandana. All hats must be kept in lockers from 7:25 until 2:15. Hoods are considered hats and must remain down during the school day.

4. Students are not permitted to have unnatural hair color.

5. Coats must remain in lockers.

6. Shirts: students are not permitted to wear halter tops, tube tops or any top exposing the midriff or cleavage.

7. Clothing decorated with offensive, obscene language or gestures promoting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex and/or violence are not permitted.

8. Failure to follow the dress code will result in the student being sent to CLC (in-school suspension) for the day until he/she complies with the dress code.

Mobile Device Policy• Mobile devices are powerful communication tools. Brunswick High School

defines mobile devices to include cell phones, iPods, iPads, MP3s, laptops, etc. While it’s understood they are a powerful communication tool, for the same reason, mobile devices can be considered a classroom distraction. In an effort to prepare students for the world in which they live, students will be permitted to carry mobile devices on their person with the following guidelines/expectations:

• When using a mobile device to access the Internet, students are required to connect using the district network.

• Mobile devices are REQUIRED to be on silent at all times.• Mobile devices MUST remain in pockets or backpacks until it is time for their

use (under teacher discretion in classrooms/Media Center, lunch period, study hall and hallways)

• Any activity conducted on a mobile device in class, any school-sponsored activity or in any way at school CANNOT be published to the Internet without the permission of administration, teacher and/or students who are involved in the text/image/audio/video file.

Mobile Device Policy, continued• AT NO TIME ARE STUDENTS PERMITTED TO USE THEIR

CELLULAR DEVICES TO MAKE TELEPHONE CALLS DURING THE DAY. SHOULD A STUDENT NEED TO MAKE A TELEPHONE CALL, HE/SHE MUST REPORT TO HIS/HER GRADE LEVEL OFFICE TO USE A SCHOOL TELEPHONE.

• **Refusal to relinquish a mobile device to a staff member will result in an AUTOMATIC suspension.

• Brunswick High School is NOT responsible for lost or mobile devices.

Mobile Device Consequences• 1st Offense: Student may pick up their mobile device

at the end of the school day in their grade level office.• 2nd Offense: Parent must pick up the student’s mobile

device or the student may pick it up at the end of the next school day. Student will receive a Wednesday or Friday detention (after school detention from 2:30 p.m. till 5:00 p.m.).

• 3rd Offense: Parent must pick up the student’s mobile device or the student may pick it up at the end of the next school day. Student will receive a consequence of one day of CLC (in-school suspension).

90/10 Grading Policy

• Brunswick High School uses a 90/10 grading system to better reflect student content knowledge versus student work habits. The breakdown will be displayed as follows:

• Overall Grade: Is the student passing the class? • Content Mastery: Is the student learning the required

content for this course?• Work Habits: Is the student developing skills for success

in the workplace or college? • Work Habits (10%) + Content Mastery (90%) = Overall

Grade (100%)

• Lockers are assigned to each student. Students are responsible for their school materials and personal property, thus lockers should be kept locked at all times.

• Sharing of lockers and combinations is not advised!

• Lockers are the property of Brunswick City Schools and can be searched at any time.

• On the first day of school, students will receive paperwork for free and reduced lunches. Please fill out forms and return to the office as soon as possible.

• $ 3.00 for school lunch• $ .50 for milk

Medications• Students who may need to take medications at

school, whether prescription or over-the- counter medications, must have a medication form completed & signed by their physician and parent. Such medication will be kept in the 9th grade office.

• Medication will only be dispensed from original and properly labeled containers.

• Students are not permitted to be in possession of prescription or over-the-counter medications at any time (unless written approval has been submitted to the 9th grade office by the student’s physician).

Crew Freshman Orientation Presentation– Last Names A-L from 7:45 a.m. till 12:00 p.m.– Last Names M-Z from 12:45 p.m. till 5:00 p.m.– 2012-13 class schedules, locker assignments and

student IDs will be distributed at orientation– Meet your Link Crew leaders– Meet teachers, classmates and upperclassmen– Get excited about the school year!– THIS ORIENTATION IS FOR STUDENTS ONLY!

Link Crew-What is it?

• A program which provides structure for freshmen and guides them toward academic and social success.

• Junior and Senior LINK CREW members mentor the 9th graders during their freshmen year.

• LINK CREW is responsible for Freshman Orientation, Freaky Fridays, tailgate parties, academic lessons with follow up and constant mentoring of their 9th graders.

ProgressBook• ProgressBook is an online grade book that students

and parents can use to check grades periodically throughout the school year.

• Login information remains the same throughout a student’s career unless a user changes it.

• New freshmen, freshmen who have lost/forgotten their login information or parents who would like their login information can request this information via the ProgressBook link on the Brunswick City School District website (www.bcsoh.org).

Graduation Requirements

Twenty-one (21) units of credit are necessary for graduation. Every student not enrolled in a state approved vocational program outside of Brunswick High School must earn at least :

• 4.5 credits of English,• 4 credits of Math (Algebra II required),• 3 credits of Science (1 Physical Science and 1 Biology)• 3 credits of Social Studies (2 History and 1 Government)• 1 credit of Health and Physical Education• One of the elective credits must include course work in

Business/Technology, Fine Arts or Foreign Language. The minimum load each year is 5 periods of scheduled classes.

Grade Point Average

Grade point averages are figured quarterly. Semester grades are used to determine yearly grade point averages. The grade point average is figured by dividing the quality points earned by the number of credits attempted. In calculating grade point averages, please remember that Brunswick High School has weighted grades.

• Questions regarding GPA should be directed to your Counselor.• Physical Education grades ARE INCLUDED in the grade point average.

Honors: 3.750 – 4.000 – Summa cum Laude (Principal’s Roll: Academic Excellence) 3.500 – 3.749 – Magna cum Laude (Honor Roll) 3.000 – 3.499 – Cum Laude (Merit Roll)

• Sophomore 10th Grade 5 Credits

Dropping a Subject

• A student may withdraw from a course within the first nine weeks without penalty, provided the student’s course load does not fall below 5 credits.

• If a course is dropped after the first nine weeks, a grade of “F” will be recorded.

Phys Ed Exemption

• There is a policy that permits students to be exempted from PE if they participate in a sport, cheerleading, dance or marching band for two completed seasons.

• Each student must complete two physical education classes or two exemptions; no combination of the two.

Athletic Eligibility

• Students must have received passing grades in a minimum of 5 one credit classes or the equivalent

• 9th graders must carry a 1.8 GPA• 10th-12 graders must carry a 2.0 GPA• All requirements must be met in the grading

period immediately preceding.
