SAFE & HAPPY RIDING

RIDING DRESS

A proper riding apparel. Proper Riding Boots. Soft Leather Gloves. Goggles or spectacles. An ISI Certified helmet. (Affix light reflecting strips

of stickers on the front and rear of the helmet forgood visibility at night).

NOTE

A light coloured shirt enables greater visibility to otherroad users especially during nights.

C A U T I O N

Loose clothing may get caught on moving parts of themotorcycle.

SITTING POSTURECorrect sitting posture is a must for stable and saferiding Sit Straight with your shoulders completely relaxed. Keep your elbows close to your body. Hold the handle grip close to its inner end. Slightly grip the fuel tank with the knees. Keep your toes in “straight ahead” direction. Before turning, look extensively in the rear view

mirror, without turning your head.

BRAKING Use both front and rear brakes simultaneously for

maximum braking efficiency. While riding on wet or bad road conditions use

brakes cautiously.

W A R N I N GApplying any one of the brakes suddenly may causethe motorcycle to skid.

RUNNING IN PERIODThe Royal Enfield Motorcycle as you would beexperiencing, is capable of consistent high speeds.However as with any new motorcycle, a “RUNNING-IN” procedure is essential to help in proper “Bedding-In” of the various moving parts in your motorcycle andto achieve optimum performance subsequently.

1. During the first 2000 Kms of run, do not exceed thespeed limits as shown in the table below.

2. Do not exceed maximum specified pay load.

3. Warm up the engine for a few minutes at idlingspeed to allow engine oil to lubricate all themoving parts in the engine before riding themotorcycle.

4. Avoid full throttle operation and do not ride atconstant throttle continuously. Vary the speed by10% while riding.

5. Avoid sudden accelerations and racing starts.

STARTING

NOTEIt is mandatory, necessary to depressand hold the Manual Bi-starter for aminimum of one minute when startingthe engine for the first time in coldmorning, every time when thetemperatures are below 10 deg C, andat higher altitudes to keep the engineidling RPM steady.As soon as the engine sufficiently warmsup then Manual Bi-starter should bereleased. Warm up engine for 2 minutes -until

idling is consistent.

USING ELECTRIC START Depress and Hold the Clutch Lever.

Press Starter Button and hold tillEngine starts. Do not release thebutton before Engine starts.

USING THE KICK START LEVER

Slowly Crank Engine with the Kickstarter lever till aresistance is felt in the lever. Slightly crank slowlyand further till the compression eases over.

Release Kickstarter lever to enable it to come to itstop resting position.

Apply a powerful swinging Kick on the lever tostart the engine. It may be necessary to open thethrottle, very slightly, when starting on choke/firsttime in the morning.

Release Choke if applied and allow Engine to runat idling speed for a few minutes.

Ensure Gear is in Neutral position and the Neutrallamp is glowing in the speedometer. To shift intoneutral, move the motorcycle back and forth gently,while simultaneously shifting the gear.

C A U T I O NNever accelerate the engine immediately after a coldstart. The engine should be allowed to run slowly for15 to 30 seconds. This will allow the engine to warm upand let oil reach all surfaces needing lubrication.Failure to adhere in damage to the engine.

To shift to 2nd and higher gearsclose throttle, depress clutch leverand press the gear pedal with heel.

Turn the ignition switchto ‘OFF’ position.

To stop the motorcycle, closethrottle, apply front and rearbrakes. Simultaneously, shiftgears into neutral just before themotorcycle comes to a completestop.

Warm up engine for 2 minutes. Depress clutch lever. Press gear pedal with toe to

engage 1st gear. Gently open throttle and release

clutch lever simultaneously. Ifclutch is released suddenly, theengine may stall and cause themotorcycle to move with a jerk.

GEAR SHIFTING, RIDING & STOPPING

NOTE Release the Starter button as soon as the Engine starts. If Engine does not start, wait for 30 seconds before

pressing the starter switch. A Clutch switch is provided in the system for the safety

of the rider. When the motorcycle is in gear, themotorcycle cannot be started. To start in geardepress the clutch lever and press Starter button tostart engine.

Prior to starting, check to see if thelow fuel indicator is glowingcontinuously.This will glow continuously, if thefuel level in tank is below 2.5 litresapprox.

PARKING

Select a firm, flat surface. Extend side stand. Tilt the

motorcycle to the left, till itis supported firmly.

Select a firm, flat surface. Hold handle bar straight. Lower center stand, such that, both the legs of the

stand are resting on firm ground. Apply pressure on the fulcrum lever on the center

stand and pull motorcycle backward.

W A R N I N GEnsure both the stands are retracted fully before ridingthe motorcycle.Please exercise extreme care while parking andensure it is parked firmly to avoid the motorcycle fromfalling over and causing injury to you or to others anddamage to the motorcycle parts.

PERIODICAL MAINTENANCEThe maintenance schedule detailed here will help you maintain your Classic 500 Motorcycle meticulously andto get a long trouble free service. The schedule provided herein is based upon average riding conditions andindicates the Kms at which regular inspections, adjustments, replacements and lubrications are to be carriedout. MINOR MAINTENANCE TIPSThe following simple maintenance activities will helpin maintaining your motorcycle. However for anelaborate maintenance, we recommend you to get intouch with a Royal Enfield Authorised Dealer / Service Center.

CONTROL CABLESLubricate after water washing motorcycle or if usedduring rainy conditions.

CENTER / SIDE STAND PIVOTS

Apply a few drops of oil on the pivotsafter cleaning the area of dirt.

DRIVE CHAIN

Clean the drive chain carefully. Apply chain lubricantwhile simultaneously rotating the rear wheel. Wipe offthe excess lubricant.

OIL LEVEL INSPECTION Place motorcycle on its center

stand on a firm surface.

Warm up engine for a fewminutes & switch off beforechecking oil level.

The level is correct if the oil levelis in the middle of the oil level window.

Top up only with recommended Engine oil

HAND LEVER PIVOTS

Wipe the area free of dirt / grease.

Apply a few drops of oil on thepivots.

C A U T I O NUse of wrong grade or spurious oil can seriously affectmotorcycle performance & damage to moving parts.

Check and remove stone, splinters, nails or otherparticles embedded in the tyre treads.

Periodically inspect wheels for spokes breakageand wheel rim run out.

Check proper seating of the tyre beading on therim whenever the tyre is reassembled.

Use only recommended tyres & tubes, inflated tocorrect air pressure.

CLEANING AND ADJUSTING PLUG GAP

SPARK PLUG

Two spark plugs are provided in your motorcycle. Remove spark plug using the plug spanner and

tommy bar. Clean the insulator tip and electrodes of the plug

carefully. Check and set the electrode gap between 0.80 to

0.90 mm.

Refit the spark plug on the cylinder head.

FRONT WHEEL REMOVAL

Place motorcycle on center stand, on a firm flatsurface. Place a wooden block below the frontend of the engine to support the motorcycle sothat the front wheel is off the ground.


Disconnect speedo cable.

Hold front axle by spannerand loosen axle nut thenremove nut along withwasher.

Loosen the pinch bolt onthe right fork guide.

Tap and remove the frontwheel spindle from the rightside.

Tilt the motorcycle to rightside and take out the wheelalong with speedo drive andright side spacer.

Insert the wheel along with speedodrive and right spacer between thefront fork ends ensuring that thebrake disc is located between thebrake pads.

Insert and tap the front wheel axlegently inside.

Refit the washer and tighten the nutfirmly.C A U T I O N

Do not press the front brake lever when wheel isremoved as this will result in brake pads gettinglocked.

Tighten the pinch bolt on the rightfork guide.

Rotate the wheel and check forsmooth rotation.

Connect the speedo cable to speedodrive and check for proper workingof speedo meter.

MINOR MAINTENANCE TIPS Take out Speedo drive and

bush on the right side. Place a 4 mm thick wooden

piece or cardboard sheetbetween the brake pads toavoid brake pads gettinglocked.

FRONT WHEEL REASSEMBLY

Remove the wooden piece /card board sheet placedbetween the brake pads.

Place the speedo drive bushin position and place speedodrive over it.

NOTEEnsure that the speedo drive is correctly located suchthat the cable can be connected without difficulty.

REAR WHEEL REMOVAL

Place motorcycle on center stand on a firm andflat surface.

Mark the position of the chainadjuster butting with the stopper onthe Left side of the swing arm fork.

Hold the axle firmly and remove thenut on the right side.

Pull out the axle from the left sidealong with the chain adjuster,taking care not to drop the wheelcollar and the spacers on the leftside.

Tilt the motorcycle slightly to the rightand pull out the rear wheel from the sprocket lugs.

Slide the wheel in position betweenthe swing arms and locate the cushrubber in the sprocket lugs correctlysuch that the wheel is positionedstraight.

Hold the wheel collar and spacerin place between the wheel hub and the left sideswing arm fork and slide the wheel axle with thechain adjuster fully and firmly through the collar,spacer and rear wheel.

Locate the chain adjuster in the marked positionagainst the stopper in the swing arm.

Hold the axle firmly from the left and tighten thenut fully on the axle on the right.

C A U T I O N

Never hammer the wheel axle thro the spacer andrear wheel to prevent damage to its threads. Guideit into the wheel gently.


REAR WHEEL REASSEMBLY Ensure the 4 cush rubbers are seated properly in

the rear wheel hub in their locations.

DRIVE CHAIN TENSION (Free Play 25-30mm)

Loosen axle nut, spindle nut, anchornut and brake rod nut.

Turn the adjuster cams on both sides,till 25 to 30 mm slackness is achieved.


Check and ensure that the numberof notches from the punch mark on the cam to thenotch resting on the pin are equal on both sides.

Apply brake and tighten all nuts.

REAR BRAKE

Turn in or out the adjuster nut atthe brake rod end.

The recommended brake pedaltravel is 20 to 30 mm.

Check that the brake is notbinding and the rear wheelrotates freely.

REAR BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT Loosen the lock nut. Turn in or out the pedal stop pin

till the brake pedal and front footrest are in the same height asshown in fig.

Tighten the lock nut. Check for free rotation of rear

wheel.

BATTERY & MAINTENANCE

Periodically check the Battery for- Cleanliness and corrosion free

terminals.- Electrolyte level in each cell.- If electrolyte level is low, top up only with distilled

water.

The motorcycle is provided with12V - 14 AH.

REMOVAL OF BATTERY FROM THE MOTORCYCLE

Insert the key into the battery coverlock, turn anticlock wise and hold.

Remove the battery cover out-wards while releasing the coverfrom the lock peg on top.

C A U T I O N Do not use battery with low electrolyte level as the

battery internals will get damaged.

ASSEMBLY OF BATTERY ON MOTORCYCLE Locate the battery in the carrier. Secure the battery to the carrier with the rubber strap. Connect the -VE and +VE terminals to

the respective cables and smearpetroleum Jelly on the terminals.

Position the battery cover over the lugson top and close the cover.

Turn the key anticlockwise and pushthe lock into the locator and turn the key clockwisesuch that the cover is locked in position.

Release Key and remove from the lock.

Disconnect both the terminal wires.(positive and negative)

Remove the rubber straps and takeout the Battery.

ASSEMBLING THE HEAD LAMP BULB

1. Refix the new halogenbulb into reflector unit ofthe headlamp.

2. Gently press the bulbholding clip and lock thefree end in its slot.

3. Fit the rubber grommet.4. Connect the electrical

connections carefully &assemble the headlampin the reverse order ofdismantling.


C A U T I O NNever touch the bulb with yourfingers, Finger prints will etch theglass and decrease bulb life. Alwayshold the bulb with paper or clean drycloth during handling.

CHANGING ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

Do not overfill the battery electrolyte as it will spillout through the over flow pipe and causecorrosion to motorcycle parts.

Clean the wire terminals free of corrosion andkeep the terminals coated with petroleum jelly.

HEADLAMP BULB REPLACEMENT

Loosen the rim holding screw on topand take out the head light reflector.

Disconnect the wiring coupler overthe bulb.

Remove the rubber grommet fromthe bulb.

Press the clip by thumb to release thefree end from bulb holder.

Pull out the bulb.

TAIL LAMP BULB

Remove the two nuts eachfrom Right & Left side of therear number plate holder.

Pull out Tail Lamp assemblyalong with bracket and twistthe bulb holder inanticlockwise to removebulb holder assembly.

Turn old bulb to remove andreplace with a new bulb.

Refit the bulb holder andturn clockwise to lock the bulbholder.

Refit the tail lamp withbracket on the reverse orderof removal process.

PRECAUTIONS Wash motorcycle when the engine is cold. Cover the silencer, tail pipe, horn and control

switches with suitable plastic bags and tie it firmlyto prevent water entry.

Remove ignition key and seal key hole usingadhesive tape.

Brush engine area with a solvent to remove dirt orgrease.

Use low pressure jet of water to clean. Never spray water with great force on head lamp,

speedometer, flasher lights, front and rear wheelhubs, electrical connections and wires, controlcables, EFI components, spark plug, battery etc.

Do not apply any corrosive solvent on paintedsurfaces or rubber parts.

Use luke warm water and mild detergent on thepainted components to remove dirt, etc.

Rinse motorcycle thoroughly with plain water toremove the detergent.

If possible, use compressed air and blow off waterparticles from the obscure areas of the motorcycle,electrical connections etc.

AFTER WASHING

Ensure, the motorcycle is thoroughly dry by wipingwith a clean soft absorbent cloth or chamois leather.

Remove all plastic bags and adhesive tapes. Lubricate control cables, pivot and rear chain with

lube oil. Polish the painted and plated surfaces using

polishing wax. Start engine and allow to run at idling speed for a

few minutes to warm up engine. Drive the motorcycle slowly, applying both brakes

intermittently to dry up the water in the brake shoes.

WASHING PROCEDURE

Incase your Motorcycle is not going to be used for amonth or more, the following precautions should betaken.

Get the motorcycle service through a Royal EnfieldAuthorised Dealer / Service Center.

Drain fuel tank and fuel line.

Keep the fuel tap in closed position and sprayengine oil inside the fuel tank to prevent rusting.

Remove spark plug. Pour in about 25ml of cleanengine oil through spark plug hole. Close the holeand crank engine several times and refit sparkplug.

Clean rear chain thoroughly and apply a thin filmof lub oil.

Remove battery from the motorcycle. Clean theterminals free of corrosion and apply petroleumjelly to terminals.

Maintain electrolyte level between “max” or “min”mark, by adding distilled water and wipe thebattery dry.

Store the battery in a cool, dry and well ventilatedplace.

Cover the silencer with plastic bags to preventmoisture entry. Set the motorcycle on its centerstand.

Apply anti rust solutions on all plated parts. Takecare not to apply this solution on rubber or paintedparts.

Store motorcycle in a clean covered area free - ofmoisture and dust.

For re-use after storage, it is preferable to get themotorcycle prepared through a Royal EnfieldAuthorised Dealer / Service Center to ensure themotorcycle is restored to its peak operatingconditions.

WARRANTY TERMS & CONDITIONSRoyal Enfield Motorcycles are manufactured by following best Quality practices in respect of the material andworkmanship.Royal Enfield (RE) warrants its motorcycle to be free from manufacturing and material defect under normal usesubject to following conditions.1. RE will replace or repair defective part(s) at their Dealerships and Authorised Service Center, free of

charge within a period of 2 years / 30,000 kms from the date of sale, whichever is earlier.2. In order to avail warranty benefits by second or subsequent owner, the second/subsequent owner should

inform the nearest Royal Enfield Service Center about the purchase of the bike and shall fill in the requisitedetails in the form as requested by Royal Enfield.

3. The warranty shall be applicable only if all the 4 free services & 5 paid services are availed in the respectiveperiod/kilometer ranges as per the schedule in the owner’s manual from RE Authorised Dealer / ServiceCenter.

4. During the warranty period, RE’s obligations shall be limited to repairing/replacing part(s) of the motorcyclefor free, only if the part(s), on examination is deemed to have a manufacturing defect. Defective part(s)which have been replaced will become the sole property of RE.

5. Cost of oil, oil filter and fuel are chargeable to the customer.6. Claims on proprietary items like tyres, tubes, spark plug, battery etc. should be taken up with the respective

manufacturer or their authorised agents in the area directly by the customer. RE shall not be liable in anymanner to replace them through their dealers. RE will, however, provide assistance in preferring suchclaims on the respective manufacturer.

7. Warranty shall not apply to:(a) Normal ageing, deterioration or rusting of plated parts, paints coat, rubber parts, soft items, glass

items, plastic parts etc.

(c) Failures occurred due to use of non recommended grade lubricants, fuel or improper level.(d) Damages due to use of non-genuine parts, lack of proper maintenance, incorrect riding habits.(e) Parts damaged due to accidents, collision, abuse etc.(f) Irregularities not recognised as affecting the quality or function of the motorcycle such as slight vibration,

oil leakage, blue discoloration of exhaust bent pipe/silencer/soft or hard shockabsorber etc.(g) Defects arising from fitment of unauthorised or additional electrical loads.(h) Motorcycle serviced or repaired at unauthorised service centers.(i) Motorcycle used for competitions / racing / Stage Rallying etc.(j) Electrical component like bulbs, fuses etc. and electronic components failure due to repairs by arc

welding.(k) Normal maintenance operations like adjustment of brakes, cleaning fuel system, engine tune-up and

other such adjustments.(l) Oxidization of buffed/painted/powder coated items etc.

8. RE reserves the right to finally decide on all warranty claims.9. RE reserves the right to make changes in design of the motorcycle without any obligation to install these

changes on previously supplied motorcycles.

EMISSION WARRANTYIn compliance with the provisions of Rule 115(2) of the Central Motor Motorcycle Rules, 1989, Royal Enfield certifies that thefollowing warranty is applicable to those components liable to affect the emission of the gaseous pollutants in its range ofmotorcycles, in normal use to which it may be subjected to.This emission warranty comes into force from 01st July 2001 and is valid for a period of 30,000 Kms. or 36 months, whichever occursearlier, from the date of sale to the first customer and is in addition to and parallel to the warranty policy, conditions andobligations laid down in the Owner’s Manual.Royal Enfield further warranty that if on examination by its Authorised Dealer / Service Center, the motorcycle fail to meet thespecified emission standards, then the Authorised Dealer / Service Center shall take necessary corrective measures and shall at itssole discretion, repair or replace free of charge such components of the emission control system to meet the required emissionstandards.The method/s of examination to determine the warranty conditions of the emission warranty related components will be at thesole discretion of Royal Enfield and / or our Authorised Dealer / Service Center and results of such examination will be final andbinding. If on examination the warranty conditions of the part/s is/are not established, Royal Enfield will have the right to chargeall, or part of the cost of such examination to the customer in addition to the cost of the components.In case of acceptance of the component/s under Emission warranty, Royal Enfield will replace free of charge, the component/s asrequired. However, the consumables like fuel, lubricants, solvents, etc shall be chargeable to the customer as per actuals.In case any of the components covered under emission warranty or the associated parts, are not independently replaceable. Royal Enfield will not be responsible for any penalties that may be charged by statuatory authorities on account of failure tocomply with the in-use emission standards.That cost/s incurred to check emission of the motorcycle will have to be borne by the customer.Emission warranty will be applicable irrespective of the change of ownership of the motorcycle provided all the conditions as laiddown in this document are met from the date of original sale of the motorcycle.

THE WARRANTY SHALL APPLY IF THE CUSTOMER

Observes all the important instructions and any other precautions listed in the owner’s manual. Under all circumstances uses lubricants and fuel as recommended by Royal Enfield. Regularly obtains and carries out maintenance in accordance with Royal Enfield guidelines and enters the details in the Log book. Immediately approaches the nearest RE Authorised Dealer / Service Center upon discovery of failure to comply with the IN-

USE emission standard inspite of having maintained and used the motorcycle in accordance with the instructions in theowner’s manual and having carried out such repairs and adjustments as may be required with a view to establish such compliance.

Produces the ‘Pollution Under Control’ certificate valid for the period immediately preceding the test during which the failureis discovered, the test having been carried out either for obtaining a new certificate or pursuant upon being directed by anofficer as referred to in sub rule (2) of rule 116 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR).

Produces the owner’s manual and Log book for verification details. Produces receipts covering maintenance of the motorcycle is specified in the owner’s manual from the date of original

purchase of the motorcycle. Produces valid certificate of Insurance and R T O Registration Certificate (R.C. Book).

THE EMISSION WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY IF

A valid “Pollution under control” certificate is not produced. The motorcycle is not serviced by RE Authorised Dealer / Service Center as per the service schedule described in the maintenance chart. The motorcycle has been subjected to abnormal use, abuse, neglect and improper maintenance or has met with an accident.

EMISSION WARRANTY

Replacement parts not specified and approved by Royal Enfield have been used. The motorcycle, or parts thereof, has been altered, tampered with or modified or replaced in an unauthorised manner. The odometer is not functioning or the odometer and / or its reading has been changed / tampered with, so that the actual

distance covered cannot be readily determined. The motorcycle has been used for competitions, races, and rallies or for the purpose of establishing records. On examination by Royal Enfield or its Authorised Dealer / Service Center, if the motorcycle shows that any of the conditions

stipulated in the Owner’s manual with regard to use and maintenance have been violated. The motorcycle has been run on adulterated / leaded fuel or lubricant other than those specified by Royal Enfield in the

Owner’s manual or any other document given to the customer at the time of sale of the motorcycle. The emission related components are tampered with. All service and parts related bills and vouchers incurred during the tenure of the emission warranty is not produced. All maintenance activities carried out on the motorcycle during the tenure of the emission warranty is not entered in the log book.

TIPS TO BE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF LAW

Always get your motorcycle checked to meet the emission regulations through and authorised emission checking center. Always carry a valid ‘Pollution Under Control’ certificate with you at all times during the validity of the emission warranty

TIPS TO REDUCE POLLUTION

Ensure that the periodical maintenance is carried out as stipulated in the owner’s manual through a Royal Enfield AuthorisedDealer / Service Center.

Use only Unleaded petrol (> 87 octane) from reputed fuel pumps. Ensure the fuel used is not adulterated. Use correct spark plug as recommended in the owner’s manual. Use lubricants as per recommendations given on grade / brand in the owner’s manual.

EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WARRANTYThe following warranty applies to the evaporative emission control system.

Royal Enfield Motors warrants the first owner and each subsequent owner, that this motorcycle is designed andbuilt so as to conform, at the time of sale, with applicable regulations specified by the evaporative emissioncontrol system related parts fitted to this motorcycle are free from defects in materials and workmanship whichmay cause this motorcycle not to meet applicable regulations period of 24 Months from the date of first use ofthe motorcycle.

The Warranty period shall begin either on the date the motorcycle is delivered to the first retail purchaser ORfrom the first date the motorcycle is used as a demonstrator OR as a display and/or trial motorcycle.

THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT COVERED BY THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMWARRANTY:

1. Failures which may arise as a result of misuse, alterations, accidents OR non performance of routinemaintenance, as specified in the Owner’s Manual.

2. Replacing OR removing OR modifying any portion of the EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM(consisting of Fuel tank, fuel tank cap, Canister, purge valve, throttle body, vapor hoses, fuel hoses and hoseconnectors) with parts not certified to be genuine.

3. Loss of time, inconvenience, loss of motorcycle use or any other consequential loss or damages.

4. Any motorcycle in which the Odometer has been tampered with, OR the Speedo cable has been disconnectedfor any reason OR is broken and not replaced immediately, due to which the exact distance covered cannotbe determined.

5. Normal ageing of parts such as fuel hoses, vapor hoses, gaskets & rubber components.
