T he Shelburne Museum is known and admired worldwide for its immense collection of folk art, objects, tools and other artifacts of 19th-century New

England. Last August, the museum finished construction on a new, state-of-the-art addition to its nearly 40 historical buildings: the Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education, lo-cated at the crest of its gently sloping campus. For the first time since Electra Havemeyer Webb founded the museum in 1947, it now has a venue that is open year round.

The building itself is a beauty: sleek, minimalist archi-tecture constructed of local stone and lumber and outfit-ted with tall windows that afford views of the surrounding grounds and passersby on Route 7. But more relevant to visi-tors is what’s inside. In addition to classrooms offering art instruction, talks and other activities, capacious galleries on two floors present contemporary art — that is, work that’s au courant but in line with the legacy of fine crafts represented by the museum’s collection.

Currently in the upstairs gallery, “John Bisbee: New Blooms” consists of sculptures and installations that the Maine sculptor has made exclusively from foot-long nails. Yes, nails. Bright Common nails, to be precise. But don’t let the simplicity of the medium fool you; Bisbee has crafted eloquent, delicate-looking wall sculptures with a floral motif, as well as massive, stand-alone pieces. In one corner of the room, a clump of individually worked “stems” form what the artist aptly calls a “Thicket.” Collectively, these works are both elegant and playful.

Bisbee’s extraordinary workmanship disguises the equal-ly impressive amount of labor involved. As museum director Thomas Denenberg puts it, “You come up with some simple idea — bending a nail — and then you bend 10,000 of them.”

Mais c’est ce qu’il y a à l’intérieur qui intéresse vraiment les visiteurs. Outre les classes où sont offerts des ateliers d’art, des conférences et d’autres activités, de vastes galeries sur deux étages présentent des œuvres d’art contemporain – sans rupture avec la tradition des métiers d’art qui caractérise la collection du musée.

Actuellement, dans la galerie de l’étage supérieur, l’exposition « John Bisbee: New Blooms » regroupe des sculptures et des installations que cet artiste du Maine a construites en utilisant uniquement des clous de 30 cen-timètres. Vous avez bien lu, des clous. Des clous communs au fini brillant, pour être plus précis. À l’aide de cet objet en apparence tout simple, John Bisbee a créé de délicates sculptures murales à motif floral d’une grande éloquence, ainsi que des œuvres autonomes massives. Dans un coin de la salle, des tiges individuelles forment un bouquet que l’artiste a judicieusement nommé « Thicket ». Collectivement, ces sculptures sont à la fois élégantes et ludiques.

design arts Kory Rogers has assembled an exhibit he calls “Supercool Glass.” The superlative is justi-fied. Intended to show a spectrum of glassworks over two centuries, the show features items from the permanent collection, ranging from dining ves-sels to medical instruments to clothing with glass beads.

These are juxtaposed with contemporary pieces from Vermont and national artists that range from the decorative to the phantasmagoric. Think glass noisemaker, glass skeletons, glass furniture and sculptures literally blown out of proportion.

In other words, don’t expect to find cups and bowls at “Supercool Glass.” Expect to be amazed.

L’extraordinaire finesse d’exécution de John Bis-bee fait oublier l’imposant travail nécessaire pour parvenir à pareil résultat. Comme le fait observer Thomas Denenberg, directeur du musée, l’idée est simple : il s’agit de plier un clou, puis un autre clou… et encore 10 000 clous.

À la galerie du rez-de-chaussée, Kory Rog-ers, conservateur de design du musée Shelburne, a mis sur pied une exposition intitulée « Super-cool Glass » – un superlatif tout à fait justifié. Cet événement présente divers travaux de verrerie réalisés sur deux siècles, dont certaines œuvres de la collection permanente : récipients, instruments médicaux, vêtements de perles de verre.

Ces objets se juxtaposent à des créations contemporaines – tantôt décoratives tantôt fan-tasmagoriques – d’artistes du Vermont et d’ailleurs au pays. Au menu : crécelle de verre, squelettes de verre, meubles de verre et sculptures soufflées démesurées.

Autrement dit, ne vous attendez pas à des tasses et à des bols. Préparez-vous plutôt à être émerveillé.

in late April, Vermont emerges from its long winter into a riot of daffodils, tulips, sunshine and — food?

Yes. Vermont Restaurant Week, presented by Seven Days and Vermont Federal Credit Union, is the state’s largest culinary event and makes every spring über-delicious. Starting April 25, chefs at more than 100 restaurants will roll out three-course, prix-fixe menus (at $15, $25 or $35 price points) that draw on ramps, rhubarb and other seasonal goodies to celebrate the beginning of this short but glorious growing season.

The 10-day foodie fest spans the state from the Champlain Islands to the Upper Valley, and includes participants as diverse as baker-ies, bars and some of the most sought-after restaurants in the state (including Hen of the Wood, where the reservation book fills up fast).

So what’s cookin’ in 2014? A smorgasbord of dishes. Here’s a taste:

Juniper is the spacious, Scandinavian-style lounge and restaurant in the hotel’s lobby, and chef Douglas Paine is serious about local bounty. Sherpa Kitchen A few blocks away, Burlington’s Sherpa Kitchen of-fers a cozier, more exotic experience. This mecca to Himalayan cuisine is beloved by locals for its momos — Tibetan dumplings stuffed with beef, chicken or veggies — and fragrant curries. Owners Lakpa Lama and Doma Sherpa will likely offer both during Restaurant Week, as well as plates of gulab jamun, or milk donuts with guar syrup. Kitchen table biStro This elegant locavore restaurant in a historic brick home sits a stone’s throw from the interstate and next to a wind-swept field near Richmond, and foodie fans drive from all over to dine here. Chef-owner Steve Atkins has earned several James Beard Award nominations, and has tight connections with local farmers. In 2013, he wowed us with local steak tartare and ricotta gnocchi with ramp pesto; we can’t wait to see what he’ll conjure in the kitchen this spring. 1840 W. Main St., Richmond, 434-8686

Michael’S on the hill This romantic, fine-dining restaurant near Stowe is blessed with great views and Alpine roots. Chef-owner Michael Kloeti is all about Swiss classics composed with local ingre-dients, from the beef he air dries for bündnerfleisch (which he served

T he Green Mountain State can be a lot more white than green in the spring: When tulips arrive in the rest of the country, it can still be blue-lips time for chilly Vermonters. But this season also means the best skiing and riding of the year at myriad mountain resorts,

not to mention the chance to watch some serious wipeouts in pond-skimming contests (or try the craze yourself), and the opening of several off-the-radar trails to hikers hankering for some fresh air. spring skiingMarch is the snowiest month in Vermont, with 57 inches typically fall-ing before April 1 at Killington. More than 1,000 trails around the state are open for skiing and riding this month, when average temperatures climb to 37 degrees. It’s also the sunniest time of the ski season, as daylight begins at 6:05 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. The sweetest spot for sunset skiing may be at Bolton Valley (boltonvalley.com), where west-facing slopes offer prime views of the golden light over Lake Champlain. Years past have seen sunset skiing and riding tickets for less than $30, good from 4 to 8 p.m. After that, you can toast March with a Moose Madness Ale at James Moore Tavern.

Thanks to the weather phenomenon known as the “Jay Cloud” that dumps white stuff on the Northeast Kingdom resort well into the spring, Jay Peak often stays open until mid-May, and last-minute lodg-ing discounts can be as steep as the snow is deep (jaypeak.com).

Killington, meanwhile, continues its Snowblind packages that drop prices 25 to 30 percent or more for those willing to gamble on just where they’ll spend the night (killington.com).

pond skimmingIf you haven’t attempted to waterski across a slushy pond wearing little more than one or two planks on your feet — and perhaps a wacky outfit — then you haven’t participated in a North Country rite of spring known as pond skimming. Sugarbush oversees the longest-running skimming event in the country, where some 100 competitors don costumes — think hot dogs, tacos, superheroes and bikinis — and slide across a teal-colored pond at the Lincoln Peak base area. This year, it’s on March 29 at noon; the $20 registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Gate House Cafeteria; spectators can guffaw for free (sugarbush.com).

Several other resorts also host pond-skimming contests, including Bolton Valley (March 22, boltonvalley.com); Mount Snow (March 29, mountsnow.com); Burke Mountain (April 5, skiburke.com); and Kil-lington (April 19, killington.com).

hikingEven when the hills seem alive with the sounds of springtime, hiking on many high-altitude footpaths during Vermont’s “mud season” can be lethal to the delicate alpine tundra. As the trails are susceptible to soil erosion, they can also be wildly unpredictable for hikers, too. Still, there are plenty of places to hit the trail this time of year. As the Green Mountain Club advises, it’s generally wise to stick to trails at lower elevations, dirt roads and recreation paths. Best to avoid all trails on state land, including Camel’s Hump and Mount Mansfield, from mid-April until Memorial Day — when almost anything is fair game.

Maple open House Weekend & vermont Maple Festival

Vermonters are proud to lead the country in maple syrup production. When spring temperatures arrive in sugar-maple forests, sap flows freely and provides the basis for this liquid gold. A winning combination of flavor and

nature, the sweet treat is a quintessentially Vermont product. So it’s only fitting that statewide celebrations are held in its honor each year.

The 13th annual Maple Open House Weekend features a wide array of sugaring operations, all of which are open to visitors. Large and small, modern and traditional, sugar shacks throughout the state continue the centuries-old practice of transforming sap into syrup. Activities include sugarbush tours — some by way of horse-drawn wagons — sap-boiling demonstrations and, of course, eating maple syrup samples.

Picking up where this tasty tour leaves off, the Vermont Maple Festival draws more than 50,000 revelers to St. Albans over three days. Marking its 48th year, the event delights festivalgoers of all ages with a carnival, live entertainment, kids’ programs and a parade down Main Street. Through it all, maple flavors reign, from cooking demos to creemees and cotton candy.

V ermont’s thriving arts culture belies its small size. Artists occupy every corner of the

state — from the shores of Lake Champlain to the Connecticut River and all points in between. While some artists work in the public eye, others pursue their creations out of sight at home. But during the Vermont Handcrafters Open Studio Weekend, art lovers can visit just about all of them.

burlington City Arts curates art exhibits at the airport in three areas: the Skyway, the area

above the escalator, and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to have a look around!

In March and April, you’ll find abstract paintings by John Gonter adorning the Skyway, followed by the more mystical canvases of Brooke Monte in May.

Passengers arriving or departing from Gates 1-8 will be greeted by the extraordinary paintings of Nissa Kauppila, who explores birds in flight in her stark-yet-delicate gouache works. In May, the same area will present Donna Bourne’s soft-focus landscapes and ethereal “reflections” paintings.

Finally, for all three months, Teresa Ekasala’s brilliantly colored abstract paintings will hang over the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step!

All these artists live in the Burlington area. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites.

T hings aren’t what they used to be in the storm-watching world. In the late 1980s, when Scott Whittier got his bachelor’s degree in meteorology, all he had were textbooks and his

imagination. Now, meteorolo-gists entering the workforce are trained with 3-D and 4-D models and, according to Whittier, “can forecast circles around me.”

What Whittier lacks in the latest training, however, he makes up for in 20-plus years of field experience. A New Hampshire native, he joined the National Weather Service’s Bur-lington field station — located in the airport — in 1993 after stints in Alaska and Connecticut. Now 48, Whittier is a warning coordination meteorologist, which means he’s the point person for forecasters, NWS and airport officials, emergency responders, airlines, and local media.

Whittier has two daughters and, according to a sign in his office, would “rather be golfing.” But his station monitors most of Vermont and part of New York state, so when ice, snow or thunderstorms strike, he steps into action. The region has seen at least 10 president-declared disasters in the last three years, so for Whittier, watching the weather has been no small chore. What does a warning coordination meteorologist do? It’s really just in the last five years that I’ve had this posi-tion, which I think is the best of both worlds: I still do some forecasting, but I get to do what I really like to do, which is seeing the emergency operations and seeing how people use our data.

Let’s say a hurricane is bearing down on the East Coast right now. What are you doing? I’ll just give you what happened with [Tropical Storm] Irene. I was on vacation leading up to it. Eight days prior to Irene, there was a system developing in the Lesser Antilles, and com-puter models were hinting that New England could get hit. So we mentioned it in our forecast discussions and sent emails to our local emergency managers saying, “Just to let you know, this is eight days out, but is certainly something that needs to be monitored.”

Then what we’ll do each day, as it approaches, is update our emergency managers and the media. In fact, I was part of the crew that got evacuated from the emergency operations center in Waterbury during Irene, and had to get moved to a facility over in Burlington.

What kind of hours do you work? We’re a 24/7 operation, and for 20 years I was doing rotating shift work. You could be working midnight to 8 a.m. one week, and another one 4 p.m. to midnight. It stinks. Fortunately, I’m Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 now, but I do stay for severe weather and fill in for vacations and sick leave.

What kind of weather recommendations would you make to travelers? Best advice is, if you’re flexible in your schedule and hear a storm is approaching, see what the airlines can do for you to move your flight back. We don’t control that, but from the media reports I’ve heard, more than likely they’ll waive the fee just so they can get people in and out quickly.

Especially since Burlington flies into Newark, JFK, LaGuar-dia, Philly and D.C., one big storm on the East Coast and you’re shutting down most of it. As we saw, unfortunately, near the Christmas holiday some people were stuck seven, eight, nine days. I’ve never seen a backlog like that, and it wasn’t so much what happened here. Be proactive: The airlines aren’t going to call you to see if you can leave early.

En quoi consiste la tâche d’un météorologiste à la coordination des alertes? Cela ne fait que cinq ans que j’occupe ce poste, qui offre selon moi le meilleur des deux mondes : il m’arrive encore d’effectuer quelques prévisions, mais je fais surtout ce que j’aime vraiment, c’est-à-dire voir aux opérations d’urgence et surveiller l’utilisation des données.

Disons qu’un ouragan s’approche de la côte Est en ce moment. Que faites-vous? Prenons par exemple la tempête tropicale Irène. Juste avant qu’elle frappe, j’étais en vacances. Un système s’était développé dans les Petites Antilles huit jours auparavant, et les modèles informatiques laissaient entendre que la Nouvelle-Angleterre risquait d’être touchée. Nous l’avons mentionné dans nos discussions sur les prévisions et avons envoyé des courriels aux gestionnaires des mesures d’urgence à l’échelle locale, pour les aviser que la situation méri-tait d’être surveillée, même si nous avions encore huit jours devant nous.

Chaque jour, à mesure que la tempête approchait, nous envoyions des mis-es à jour aux gestionnaires des mesures d’urgence et aux médias. En fait, je faisais partie de l’équipe qui a été évacuée du centre d’intervention d’urgence de Waterbury, pendant Irène, et j’ai dû me déplacer dans un établissement de Burlington.

À quoi ressemble votre horaire de travail? Notre centre est ouvert 24 heures sur 24, sept jours sur sept, et pendant 20 ans, j’ai fait des quarts rotatifs. Une semaine, j’étais en poste de minuit à 8 h, et la suivante, de 16 h à minuit. C’est désagréable. Heureusement, je travaille maintenant du lundi au vendredi, de 9 h à 17 h, mais je reste plus tard lorsque les conditions sont extrêmes et je remplace mes collègues en vacances ou en congé de maladie.

Quels sont vos conseils météo aux voyageurs? Le meilleur conseil que je peux vous donner, si votre horaire est flexible et que vous savez qu’une tempête approche, est de contacter votre compag-nie aérienne pour voir si vous pouvez changer votre horaire de vol. J’ai vu dans certains médias que les transporteurs renonçaient parfois aux frais de modification pour être en mesure de gérer rapidement les allées et venues des passagers.

Comme l’aéroport de Burlington assure la liaison avec Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, Philadelphie et Washington, D.C., une grosse tempête sur la côte Est peut entraîner la fermeture de la majeure partie des installations. Comme nous l’avons malheureusement observé à l’approche des vacances de Noël, certaines personnes ont été immobilisées sept, huit, voire neuf jours. Je n’avais jamais vu pareils retards, et ce n’était même pas vraiment à cause du climat ici. Soyez proactifs : les compagnies aériennes ne vont pas vous appeler pour vous demander si vous pouvez partir plus tôt.
