the entertainments line-up is immense! In these two weeks you’re blessed with some amazing acts and nights out. Pop! goes to the Wild Wild West in Week 8, while the best house music will be given a rinsing as Ministry of Sound sets up shop at The Copper Rooms. But we’re not done there: you then get Mr Scruff,

Jaguar Skills and student favourite Skool Dayz back-to-back!

Sleep is overrated. Make sure you buy your tickets early!

Visit www.thecopperrooms.com to check out the full line-up.

So, Reading Week has been and gone. For those of you lucky enough to enjoy it, I hope you made the most of it. Term has whizzed by so far! Can you believe that we are already in week 7? I wonder where all the time has gone.

Whilst some people were lounging on their sofas with a book, things at SUHQ have been progressing rapidly. After a mammoth Autumn Elections period in Week 3, this week sees the Union’s AGM taking place on Monday Week 7 (November 16th) in MS.01 at 7pm.

This is your chance to find out how the Union’s finances are shaping up, how your Union is performing, as well as have your say in future Union policy. It’s a great way to find out about the inner workings of your Union. If you ever wanted to know what was really going on, this is your chance.

As always, if you ever want any more information about how to get involved in your Union, feel free to contact me.

Here’s to hoping that the next few weeks go a bit slower…

warwick international development summit

A unique and internationally recognised student-run event, WIDS aims to raise awareness of development issues by challenging narrow conceptions through an innovative, interconnected approach to development. WIDS was featured in The Guardian as ‘a great mechanism for global awareness and engagement.’

Bringing together stakeholders from different sectors in development from both developed and developing countries they aim to reconcile policy, practice and theory through critical engagement and constructive debate.

WIDS Summit 2009 focuses on the overarching theme ‘Development for the Modern Age: Crisis, Climate and Co-operation’.

This year’s summit will be held in the University of Warwick’s Maths & Stats building for its duration and runs between 20th-22nd November.

themed week joy! These two weeks are chock-a-block with student-run events:

week 7 - pride weekLoads of events to suit people from all backgrounds: whether you’re into the bridge between queer identity and faith, love without borders, what all the letters stand for in the LGBTUA+ acronym or just what it is all about, there’s an event for you. Check out the Facebook group at Warwick Pride Week 2009.

week 8 - sexual health awareness weekThis glorious new event is SHAW for short. You may have seen the knitted condoms appearing on bollards, gloves with sexual health messages or the posters up around campus - basically, the week is all about arts, academia and activism. Poetry, GUM clinics, debates and creative workshops - by the end of the week, you’ll be an expert on all things sexual and healthy. Check out the Facebook group at SHAW 2009.

get involvedMake sure you come out and take part. There are even more themed weeks still to come, from RAG Week in Week 9 to Go Green Week in Term 2.

did you know...?

did you know...

the bread oven ... so far, close to 15K baguettes have been sold in The Bread Oven? Also that when asked what name the new deli in the building should have, the overwhelming majority voted for The Bread Oven. If you like The Bread Oven now, you will love it when it opens with a wider range of options including both cold and hot meals. Watch this space...

xananas ... in the month of October alone over 20,626 items have been sold in Xananas, the most popular meal being the Honey Barbecue Chicken (yum). Over 600 sizzling chicken fajitas have come out the kitchen with many more in November too. But did you know that there are also weekly specials? Come and try them out in Xananas?

the dirty duck ... The Dirty Duck has only been open since Term 3 09? Words can’t describe its success. Let us paint you a picture. So far it has served:

28055 pints of Carlsberg ○10975 carvery meals ○8986 shots of vodka ○7426 burgers ○5308 packets of crisps ○2257 fish and chips ○

Not bad for a new place eh?

the copper rooms... that we were nominated in the Godiva Awards for both best live music venue and best club for The Copper Rooms? The rebuild has made sure the crowd get the best quality music from live bands and performances. That’s why we bring you big names like Tinchy, Seth Lakeman and Ministry of Sound. Also did you know that societies can book out The Copper Rooms for their events?

curiositea... that Curiositea, the Union’s Café right on the Piazza, is going to sell not just amazing teas, but also hot chocolates, coffee and milkshakes. It’s going to have a warm and cosy feel to it whilst being a little quirky. Put simply, each visit to Curiositea is going to be an experience not to be missed. Curious yet?

things not to miss... there it isn’t long till the holiday season is upon us. Don’t forget:

Advent Calendars ○Chocolate calendars available in shops to kick off the countdown to Christmas

Thanksgiving ○Mostly an American celebration, but any excuse for having a big meal and turkey is worth it in my books

Xananas Christmas Dinners ○During Week 10 and the first week of the holiday you can enjoy a delicious Xmas meal at Xananas. Book early. Call now on 02476 572750*

* £5 deposit per head required to reserve the booking

terrace bar... that the newest bar in the Union is going to have a High Street feel to it with amazing cocktails? The décor of The Terrace Bar has been best described as ‘sexy’. Imagine yourself one minute overlooking the Piazza with your Pina Colada, the next chilling on bean bags with a Mojito while a DJ plays cool funky tunes.

opening event... on January 15th the new Students’ Union building’s Launch Party will take place. Although the building will be available from the start of term, make sure you keep that date free in your calendar to come and celebrate the long awaited, new and improved, SU building with everyone. Expect the unexpected.

Keep your eyes on our website…

have your say... mystery shoppersWe’re looking for a team of mystery shoppers to help us with this project. You will have to visit a service or outlet and then fill in a questionnaire for us.

This isn’t a paid position, though if you fill in 4 questionnaires we will give you vouchers as a thank you. If you have ever thought the Union could be doing something better, or if you’ve ever enjoyed something at the Union, this is a great chance to get involved and share your thoughts with us.

To apply, please email Ais Reynolds on [email protected] or call 024 7657 2758.

Dance music superbrands are ten-a-penny nowadays, but when it comes to ruling the roost there’s only one true daddy: the mighty MINISTRY OF SOUND.

Nigh-on every major dance hit of the last 20 years owes a debt of gratitude to this hugely influential label, club franchise and media brand, and in Week 7 they’ll be touching down at The Copper Rooms to lash out banger after banger exclusively for you fine folk.

Advance tickets will be essential, together with the obligatory cry of ‘Oot! Oot!’ - make sure you bag yours soon to avoid disappointment!

question time

question timeNow that reading week is over, the Sabbs have gone back to their old ways of watching sitcoms and movies in the evenings. This week’s question was met with the typical, ‘it depends on what mood…’ However, we pushed harder and here are the answers they each gave to the question...

sumaiyaMulan - I love Disney and there’s something about a story about a strong minded woman that speaks to me.

andrewI’ve got so many favourite films - Austin Powers for a guaranteed

laugh, Forrest Gump as an all-time classic, Memento is my favourite thriller and Innocent Voices my favourite foreign film. If I had to

choose one, it’d be A Fond Kiss...

Goodbye Lenin - because it is a funny and poignant social critique of German reunification (a huge historical event in itself) with a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude.

alexNo Country for Old Men - definitely has the most unnerving psychopath I have ever seen, even more so than the Heath ledger in The Dark Knight. The shots and the cinematography are really good.

James Bond - Nice cars, nicer women. A few cocktails, ‘shaken not stirred’, and lots of action! It’s not deep and inspiring but truly entertaining and exciting.

jamesJust the one? I can’t possibly choose! I know it’s a cliché, but I do like The Shawshank Redemption. Also, Gran Torino is a cracking film. If you’re looking for a laugh, then I think any Monty Python film is a

winner, although I’d definitely pick Holy Grail over the others.

sami28 Days Later - what more could you want from a film? Awesome soundtrack, crackin’ views of a post-apocalyptic london, and quasi-zombies to the rafters. luvverly.
