Volunteers Needed

Do you have an hour or two once a month to spare? We are looking for volunteers to help assemble our monthly bulletin. Usually we meet the last Tuesday or Wednesday of the month in the am. If you are available please call the office and we will add you to our list. We will call in the beginning of the week. If you are available that is great! If you are not we will call again next month.

“Be an ALS Angel” … Please contact Jessica Braunfeld Turnof if you can spare about an hour on one or two evenings a month to help our congregant, Charley Braunfeld, by driving one of his aides from Spring Valley or Nyack to his home in Tappan. Jessica can be reached at [email protected]

From the Rabbi: Dear NHC friends,

As you know, I have been very concerned about the education of children in East Ramapo, where private school parents have taken over the public school board and, according to a state report, "recklessly mismanaged" the district and has diverted funds to private schools.

The state can get involved if a new bill passes the Legislature. This would help bring "justice for all".

Therefore, I ask that you add your support and please sign on to the petition here: www.strongeastramapo.org.

B'Shalom, Rabbi Paul Kurland [email protected]

From the Co-Presidents: There was a lot of excitement for all ages in and around NHC during February. Just to name a few, it included NHC’s Men’s Club participation in the World Wide Wrap, Adrienne Milich being honored by Israel Bonds, Family Service and Tot Shabbat, USY and 8th Grade “Shul In”, GALIM program for 8th – 12th grade, Sisterhood’s “Shabbat Experience”, Hadassah Shabbat, mid-week family fun and game night, cake decorating demo with Nate Gross, and an informal yet informative discussion with “Big Mike” Gondelman, founder of Jerusalem Sober House. In addition, we had a successful blood drive, congregants assisted at the Rhoda Bloom Food Pantry and the Jewish Federation of Rockland’s Super Sunday. We can’t thank everyone enough for your support and participation! Looking forward, the following are a few upcoming save-the-dates. REMINDER

NHC needs to provide TEA (box of tea bags) or PEANUT BUTTER for Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry. Please drop off Kosher peanut butter and tea at the box outside of NHC office. In addition, each month one synagogue is responsible for providing additional volunteers to support the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry, located at the new JCC-Jewish Family Service entrance. Things are getting busy at The Nanuet Hebrew Center:

On March 22nd we will be hosting our 75th Anniversary Art Auction. Art and memorabilia will be on display for purchase at the auction. Dessert and coffee will be served. Please get the word out about this event. Bring friends and family. The more we fill our room, the greater our earning potential for this event.

On April 12th, we will culminate our anniversary year celebration with our annual journal event. This year we will be honoring NHC’s legacy and history, as well as bestowing upon Linda Russin the Stanley Blumenthal Community Service Award. In an effort to “GO GREEN” we will be trying something new this year. We will be presenting an electronic (online) journal as well as online registration for the brunch at the Rockleigh Country Club. For those who still wish to submit their ad the traditional way, we have made paper registrations available. The journal event is the most important fundraiser of the year. Please, please, please consider volunteering your time to make this event successful. Also please consider helping us solicit ads to honor our history and Linda. Why not ask your doctor, your dentist, your friends, your family; anyone who you are in contact with is a potential donor.

As part of our 75th Anniversary, we have also created a Facebook community page to honor our legacy. Please peruse the page, upload your favorite photos, or share your stories about your special relationship with the Nanuet Hebrew Center. USY / Kadima News February was another fun filled month for USY and Kadima. While snow prevented us from going ice skating, members from our chapter will be meeting at Palisades Center to go skating with our friends from New City Jewish Center on February 28th at 8 pm. This event speaks to the spirit of inclusion as Nanuet Hebrew Center welcomed teens from our synagogue as well as across the Metropolitan area for our 3rd annual Shul-In. In addition to participating in events with kids and teens from across the region, NHC is will be hosting a teen congregation and Pre-Kadima programming in March. Be on the lookout for dates and times as we will be offering activities for elementary school kids all the way through high school. Last, and certainly not least, on March 1, NHC's USY will volunteering at this year's Purim carnival! We hope to see you there, and be on the lookout for other announcements about additional programs.

In Our Mailbox

To my dear Sisterhood family, Thank you so much for presenting me with the Woman of Valor Award. It was a great surprise and I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Whatever I did was a labor of love for the Nanuet Hebrew Center and does not need any reward. I hope I can continue to do the same for many more years. I also would like to thank all the people who sent me Leagrams and cards and made donations for my recent birthday. Please excuse my not thanking you all personally. With love, Ilse Spatz Dear NHC friends, Thanks to all of you who sent donations, Leagrams and good wishes for Anya and Jason's marriage. From their auf ruf in November at our shul to their wedding ceremony, officiated by Rabbi Kurland, it was a heartfelt experience that included our NHC family, and we are blessed to be a part of it. Bernetta and Andrew Gordon Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to record your mitzvah minute. Your message was inspiring and motivating and I think resonated with a lot of the people in the room. Your participation serves as a positive example to our community. Thank you for "being there" for us. Best, Holly Mauskopf-Dwek Campaign Director Jewish Federation of Rockland County Dear NHC Family, We would like to thank everyone for their kind cards and Leagrams congratulating us on the birth of our lovely daughter, sister, granddaughter, Addison Rivka Hart Benner! Thank you also, Rabbi Kurland, for creating such a warm welcome to Rivka at her baby naming on Shabbat Truma, February 21. Dear friends, Thank you so much for your contribution to People To People made during 2014. We appreciate your act of kindness! Sincerely, Diane Serratore Executive Director Dear Rabbi Kurland, On behalf of The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) and the American SPNI, I hereby acknowledge your donation. Your tzedakah gift helps SPNI sustain its 62 year legacy of protecting the natural resources of Israel, while providing recreation and nature education programs for Israelis and tourists, to develop a new generation of environmental advocates. The ASPNI office has a supply of materials we would be happy to share. If interested, Please contact us. Your support is sincerely appreciated, Ms. Robin Gordon Leon Sokol, Russell Rothman ASPNI Director ASPNI Co-chairmen Dear Rabbi Kuriand, It is my pleasure to thank you for your generous gift to JBI International. With your committed support, you give the blind, visually impaired and reading disabled, both here and abroad, the renewed ability to “read,” whether in Braille, Large Print or Audio format. You enable them to stay connected to their communities and to Jewish thought and practice. Most importantly, you give them the company of good books, helping to stave off many a lonely hour. As you know, JBI is dedicated to reaching out to the community in an effort to promote the widest use of our unique services. More blind, visually impaired and reading disabled children, adults and seniors than ever before are benefiting from JBI’s free library. You have a right to feel as proud as we do of JBI’s many achievements. It is your abiding interest and support which help us every day to enrich the individual lives and sustain the Jewish spirit of those who, as a result of their visual impairment, might otherwise feel excluded from educational, cultural and communal life. We—and the blind and visually impaired individuals we serve—are deeply grateful for your heartfelt support. Sincerely, Judy E. Tenney Chairman

Dear Rabbi Kurland, Please accept this donation to your discretionary fund in memory of my friend David Kezner at his yahrzeit. The years fly by and still I smile when I think of David and the treasure he was in my life. His memory is truly a blessing to me. Sincerely, Hani Dear Rabbi Kurland, Anya and Jason’s wedding was one of the most memorable times of our lives. We thank you for making their ceremony one that everyone there will remember and cherish. So many people came up to tell us how warm and personal you made it. We are grateful that you and Gerri could be a part of this very special day. Bernetta and Andrew Gordon Dear Rabbi Kurland, My father was a special man and will be sorely missed. Thank you for your support at t his difficult time. I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and expressions of sympathy through the process. Michelle Zeman –Feiwus Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for helping to make my trip to Israel a reality. It was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to go back. Some of the highlights were climbing Masada, floating in the Dead Sea, and celebrating one of the girls’ Bat Mitzvahs at the Wall. We even met the Mayor of Tel Aviv, by chance. The impression that people have of Israel is that it is very dangerous and there is always a war going on, but it couldn't be more wrong. Everyone was so welcoming and happy we were there. It was such a great experience. Thank you again for helping me be able to go. Jacob Steingart To Whom It May Concern, On behalf of Clarkstown Pharmacy and our community rewards program, I am presenting you with a check. All you have to do for NHC to keep receiving a check is mention NHD and Clarkstown Pharmacy will give you a rewards Card. Tzedakah/vesm

Tzedakah received and recorded by the 10th of the month or the first business day after, will be acknowledged on these pages. If the office is closed because of holidays falling on these days, only donations received before the holiday will appear. Please also note that acknowledgment or lack thereof on these pages

does not constitute an official receipt of your donation by the shul. In the event that acknowledgment of your donation does not appear, please let the synagogue office know and we will print it in the next issue of the Bulletin.

Planning Ahead Now is the time to start the planning that enhances the work of the congregation by raising the necessary funds so dues need not be raised. Our ongoing fundraisers include the Rabbi's Walk and the Tree of Life. To reserve a brick on the Rabbi’s Walk or reserve a stone or a leaf on the Tree of Life, call Estelle Eisenkraft in care of the office at 845-708-9181.
