FIVE QUESTIONS!
On July 16, 2017, Maralyn Turner brought two guests to worship service,
close friend Gloria Roberts Waymouth and Gloria’s husband Don. Gloria
was in town for the Buck Creek – Monitor Reunion which was held the day
before (see page 14). Gloria’s mother Lucile Roberts was a Sunday School
teacher at BCUMC many years ago. Let’s see what Gloria has to say about
BCUMC, then and now!
GLORIA ROBERTS WAYMOUTH 1. When you first saw the church building again, what things did you
notice that had changed?
It was so nice to be back to the BCUMC. Many times we have driven by the
church when we were at Buck Creek but the handicap entry was new to me.
That is so helpful to so many people who may not be able to climb the steps to
attend church and other gatherings. When we entered the church it was as if
maybe we had never left it. Although the furniture and etc. appeared new, the
set up of the church was the same and beautiful. I was glad to see music was
still part of the service. I was sad to see the choir seats empty as this was so
much a part of the church not only on Sunday services but special events at
other times. Maralyn Turner and I sang in the choir and in our high school
years she played her marimba and I the piano. We often were reminded by our
parents to
not get one
of our
laughing
episodes
during the
church
service! The
addition to
the
basement is
quite lovely.
I am sure
the extra
kitchen and
class room
space is very
helpful.
2. How many years had it been since you had visited BCUMC?
My last memory of attending BCUMC was when you honored my mother,
Lucile E. Roberts on her retirement from her many years of teaching Sunday
Left to right: Gloria Waymouth, Maralyn
Turner & Don Waymouth having fun!
12
School Classes. She loved teaching the little children and was able to do it for
many years with the faithful help of Mary E. Davidson. Thank you again
Mary.
3. Your mother Lucile Roberts was a Sunday School teacher at BCUMC.
What memories do you have of her teaching you and your friend
Maralyn?
I was very young when mother had me in her class. I soon was promoted to
Sarah J. Norris in the next class which Maralyn Turner had already been
attending. Maralyn has told me my mother in later years had given her much
help in some hard times she had encountered. I remember helping mother plan
and make things for her classes through my senior year in high school
especially the birth of baby Jesus during Christmas .
4. Tell us about yourself (marriage, career, etc.)
I was born 11-12-1934 to Charles R. and
Lucile E. Roberts. My growing up years
was all in Buck Creek. I graduated from
BCHS in 1952 at which time I left B.C. at
age 17 to enroll in St. Elizabeth School of
Nursing. I was very fortunate to be
awarded a full scholarship to St. E. I
loved nursing then and it is still very
much in my heart. I graduated from St. E
in 1955, took my state boards and passed.
I was finally an R.N. After graduation I
went to Rensselaer to work for a
physician. While in Rensselaer I met Don
Waymouth who had just finished 4 years
in the navy. Courtship began and on
September 23, 1956 we were married in
the Rensselaer United Methodist Church.
Maralyn was supposed to be one of my
bridesmaids but Carmen was due in
November and she was unable to be in the
wedding although she did attend. Our first son Steve was born 01-27-1958
followed by Timothy born 02-23-1959. We must say they were and still are
the joy of our lives. Steve and Lynn were married 05-08-1982 and blessed us
with 3 grandchildren, Maegan, Shannon and Chad. Tim and Sue were married
07-09-1983 and blessed us with 2 grandchildren, Adam and Heather. Shannon
and Matt married and have blessed us with one great granddaughter, Gracie. I
retired in December 1999 after 45 years of nursing. I must say I truly still
miss nursing. In July, 2004 we decided to move to Florida. Our son Tim and
wife Sue live in Lutz, Fl. which is only 40 miles from here where we live in
Hudson. Nice to have them close.
In September, 2016 we returned to Rensselaer to attend church service at the
Methodist church we were married in to celebrate 60 years of marriage. Our
Gloria, RN
13
sons and their wives were able to attend with us. Steve and Lynn from Kansas
and Tim and Sue from Florida. A wonderful time was had by all. God has
blessed us with good physical health (and most of our mental health) of which
we are very thankful.
5. What is one of your fondest memories of Buck Creek United Methodist
church?
Most of my fond memories of the church comes from the people and pastors.
My father died when I was 9 years old and in all of my childhood people of
the church, masons, Eastern Star and the community helped us if ever needed.
Sometimes we never knew who had done things for us. I know they have been
rewarded by a higher being for their kindness.
Thank you again Nancy for the pictures. I hope this will help you with your
article. You do such a great job with this Newsletter. My thanks to everyone
for the welcome back to the church. I feel it is so rewarding to have a small
church and see the people take such an active role in keeping it going. Also,
thank you Pastor Monical for your message and the condolences for my
roommate, Helen Cochran and her family.
Jimmy I was thrilled to see your son spreading the word and then finding out
he is married to one of our classmates daughters. Really is a small world.
Also, thanks to you Ruth for continuing teaching the young ones.
Sincerely,
-Gloria Waymouth

BUCK CREEK – MONITOR SCHOOLS FIRST COMBINED
GATHERING, MET AT FAIRVIEW July 15, 2017 An attendance of 150 + enjoyed an excellent lunch served by Stonehouse
Restaurant. Parking problems were all taken care of by Jim Kite, Alan Miller
and Dick Collins. Seating was 100 upstairs and 50 + downstairs. Right away
everyone decided the space sure needed to be larger. Everyone survived and
we were very happy to have such a great turnout for this first event.
At 12:00 Alan Miller gave the invocation for both groups. A short business
meeting conducted by Jean Macy and Dick Wiegand started at 1:00P.M. Dick
and Jean counted the votes on the decision of continuing the dinner on a joint
basis. The vote was unanimous that we continue.
It was suggested that we sit the classes together and that the Memorials for
our departed classmates be read. The board readily accepted these
suggestions.
The Alumni had traveled from Florida, California and Illinois just to name
a few of the states. Oldest Graduate from Monitor was: Elizabeth Combs
Teel, 1941. Oldest Graduate from Buck Creek was: Margie Fisher Dunk
1943.
It was agreed that July 2018 will be the next Monitor and Buck Creek
Alumni Luncheon. (East Tipp HS graduates will be included.) Everyone truly
enjoyed meeting “old” friends with lots of laughing and good conversation.
We had many people helping take down tables and cleaning up. Thanks again
to all board members who made this event possible.
-Judy Brooks Bandy
Secretary Buck Creek Alumni

RECIPE CORNER Don’t let anyone look down on you
because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in
conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
–1 Timothy 4:12 Coming across an old lunch menu from
Hershey Elementary, 1996, I spotted
“Texas Straw Hats” as the main dish on
one of the days. I was inspired to make
and taste this dish that my children had
consumed but I never had. Here it is!
–Nancy Schnepp

MALCOLM’S MISSION PROJECT: REPORT Lovingly known as Malcolm's
Mission Project, the ice cream
booth at the Tippecanoe Steam and
Power show served coffee, Mary
Lou's donuts, and Glover's ice
cream. Thanks to all who helped
and to Sam Stratton for
transportation of the ice cream.
Tristin Pattee, Linda Habbinga,
Glenda Davidson, and Kay Miller
participated in the iron skillet toss
at the Tippecanoe Steam and Power
Show July 29. Although Tristan
was the closest of these participants
being only 6" inches from the
target, The winner had a direct hit
on the bull's-eye.
Background: Steam & Power
Show used to be held at Battle
Ground battlefield and was 3 days.
It has moved to the Amphitheater
and reduced to one day. Another
church (BGUMC?) had an ice
cream booth and did very well.
When it moved, sales plummeted.
Then the booth was moved and it
did not get any better. I think the
church pulled out.
Last year, Malcolm (Miller)
wanted an ice cream booth.
Malcolm set everything up himself
including getting people to work,
ordered supplies, then turned the
profits over to the church for
"Missions". Malcolm had said
"Wherever it is needed." This year, Malcolm was ill, and Ralph Rohrer had
already signed a contract for the ice cream booth so we fulfilled the
commitment. Last year we thought Malcolm should choose the mission, but
he said it was to go to the church.
This year... we fulfilled the commitment. I feel Malcolm had a 2-fold
purpose: 1) the Steam & Power is dwindling and this would help add interest
to it. 2) the church might as well benefit. -Kay Miller

various secretarial positions in Lafayette prior to accepting the position of
Resident Program Director of Pine Creek United Methodist Camp in Pine
Village, Indiana in 1969 where she and her family resided for 12 years as
caretakers.
Bonnie spent her life as a faithful and loyal servant of God. She was
licensed into ministry in 1981 and was ordained by the North Indiana
Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1988 after attending Garrett-
Theological Seminary and Purdue University. Pastor Bonnie served
congregations throughout northern Indiana, including Goodland, Raub, Porter,
South Bend First UMC, Bourbon, Buck Creek UMC (Nov. 2001-June 2003);
Burlington, Armstrong, and most recently visitation pastor at Grace UMC
where she was a member. She also served as a visitation chaplain for Serenity
Hospice, a ministry she cherished. Retirement didn't suit her because she felt
her work was never done. It was her calling to help people understand God's
love whether it be through the pulpit, mission trips, or quiet conversations.
And she did so with loving grace and conviction. She touched the lives of
countless people over the years and continued to touch them even in her final
days.
She traveled the world, but called Lafayette home. Her radiant smile could
easily be spotted in the community she loved. Whether she was enjoying the
Citizen's Band concerts, meeting friends for lunch, or taking a walk, her zest
for life was contagious. Her world travels took her to Israel, Greece, the
Caribbean, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, embracing each culture and the people she
met. She especially enjoyed going with her family throughout the United
States to watch the Cubs. A special trip was made to attend games 6 and 7 of
the World Series where her beloved Cubbies became the World Series
Champions on her 81st birthday (she was a lifelong fan). Her adventures led
her to parachute from an airplane on four occasions, taking grandchildren or

anyone else who dared to go with her. The exhilaration of the fall left her on
solid ground in her faith for Christ as she knew He created the heavens and
earth.
In Bonnie's world, there were no strangers, only people she hadn't met.
Bonnie could strike up a conversation with anyone at any time about any topic.
She always left them for the better and perhaps with another point of view to
ponder. Bonnie was always rooting for the underdog. She loved people. And
they loved her.
Funeral services were at Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. Lore Blinn
Gibson officiated at the service, and many gave their memories of Bonnie.
Burial followed in Armstrong Cemetery of Greenhill, IN. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church - Pastor's
Discretionary Fund (used to provide confidential financial support to persons
in need or for church expenses not totally covered by the budget); A Better
Life - Brianna's Hope c/o Grace United Methodist Church (a faith based
support group for those affected by addiction); or Serenity Hospice - West
Lafayette, Indiana (funds provide a beneficial service and are used to carry out
meaningful wishes identified by those being served compassion and care by
Serenity Hospice). Hippensteel Funeral Home entrusted with care.
Our deepest and sincerest sympathies to Bonnie’s family and friends. She
touched every life of those who attended BCUMC during her service there. A
donation will be made in her beautiful name to the Gideons by BCUMC. And
the addition of her name to the in-memory-of list with the socks collected at
BCUMC in 2017 for the Lebanon Children’s Home, that hurts. Bonnie
enjoyed her trip with the Ladies Missionary delivering the socks. She
continued to give even after she was assigned elsewhere by the District. We
shall all miss you Pastor Bonnie. Hope the angels can keep up with you!
MEMORIES OF BONNIE + The first time I met her at a church gathering we discovered we had both
graduated from Jeff High School and we broke out singing the "Jeff Fight
Song". Of course, she was the better singer! -Pat Sense
+ I remember when she and Peg would come to Delphi to visit and eat donuts
and drink coffee. Paul said he always liked her better than any female pastor
he had ever known. -Lena Jones, San Diego, CA.
+ One of my fondest memories of Pastor Bonnie was the Seder meal, back in
April of 2003. This to our knowledge had never been done at BCUMC. She
led us through the steps, and we tasted things we never had before. An
explanation and significance of each element was given. From the bitter
herbs and roasted egg, to the Haroset and Gefilte fish, it was a unique
experience that I will always treasure. -Nancy Schnepp

+ We called her our Sweet Bonnie, loved being with her. We went to her
house to pick up the book she wrote about her life experiences. Right away she
makes you feel at home. Loved our visits with her and our lunches. She made
us feel like the most important people in her life at that moment. One year at
our church retreat she showed us how to make fuzzies out of yarn, for
comforting you when you need something to hold anywhere anytime. We are
going to miss her and her fun loving ways. -Fred and Faye Merkel
+ When I think of Pastor Bonnie, I think ENERGY and lots of it!! You never
knew where you might spot her either. The hospital, Arni's, water aerobics at
the Y... I'm telling you the energy bunny had nothing on her. Of course church
and caring for others was her passion and it showed. She always made me feel
like the prettiest gal in the room... What a wonderful person! I was honored
to know her. She will be missed by many! I can hear our Lord saying,
Welcome back home Bonnie, job well done!! -Sheryl Polley
+ When I think of Pastor Bonnie, these words come to mind: called, strong,
faith-filled, adventurous, non-judgmental, sincere, human, committed, loving
servant of our Lord. Our loss...Heaven's gain! -Ruth Davidson
