Fieldwork including a geophysical survey and evaluation trenches recorded a large rectilinear enclosure containing at least one substantial building, which stylistically resembled a proto-villa. Large quantities of late Iron Age and Romano-British pottery, Roman and early Saxon metal artefacts suggested that this site was occupied for a long period of time. [Au]

Activity from this period appeared to be focused around the 12th to 13th centuries, although at least one late Anglo-Saxon pit (in addition to early Anglo-Saxon residual pottery) and a small number of Saxo-Norman features were also present. Some 18th and 19th century activity was also located and was likely to relate to garden and drainage features within the former ground of Lewes House. One Late Iron Age ditch was also located, in addition to two large contemporary pits. Such evidence was incredibly rare within Lewes, the only other examples being a pit and spatially associated post holes within an earlier evaluation only c.50m to the south. The mechanical excavation of four 1.5m wide test trenches with a total length of 40m revealed a single 14th century pit and two roughly parallel ditches/gullies. One of the latter features yielded tile of possible 15th century date, while the remaining cut was of certain mid 15th-16th century origin. Although the site of the intended tennis court construction lay within 'Quarter 21' of the town's historic centre, no in situ evidence for any surviving medieval structures was discovered during the fieldwork. Archaeological Evaluation Report Wessex Archaeology Salisbury : Wessex Archaeology , 2005, 38pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Wessex Archaeology A field evaluation was carried out as part of a programme of archaeological work, this report documented the evaluation of Area B. A wheel rutted trackway of possible medieval date was found to cross the site on an east-west alignment. A substantial boundary ditch of Iron Age or later date ran along the dry valley bottom. In the valley bottom itself a probable Late Iron Age roundhouse was found, together with one or more postholes of Middle Bronze Age date. Two undated isolated postholes were also found which may have been indicative of further activity along the valley axis. A dense undated spread of burnt flint in the bottom of the dry valley may have suggested the presence of some sort of large-scale or prolonged activity just outside the site to the west. This may have represented a 'burnt mound'; although there was no evidence of the running water source which would normally have been associated with such a feature. There appeared to be a western limit to the burials, coinciding with a fall-off in the natural topography towards what was interpreted as a small waterway that originally bounded the western limit of the Paddock. Considerable modern backfilling was noted. The graves themselves were closely spaced an parallel, with the incidence of intercutting very uncommon. Most graves were aligned north-west/south east or north-east/south west, with no mass graves discovered but some multiple burials. The majority of the dead had been interred in plain wooden coffins and not in their hammocks, as had been previously believed. One brick-built structure dated to the 18th century was encountered, and was thought to have been a gardener's or grave-digger's shed or possibly an ammunition store. This sequence of bank deposits contained a large amount of mortar and fragments of Roman tile, suggesting that they were derived from Roman contexts. However, these deposits were the result of landscaping following the construction of the house in the 1960s, and were therefore redeposited. Deposits below the bank consisted of a buried former topsoil and below this, deposits containing inclusions from the Roman period, but the mixed composition of the soils and abraded nature of the inclusions suggested that it was the result of landscaping and farming activities. This might have been explained by the difference in ground level within the courtyard compared with the adjoining Little Minster Street. It was suggested that the post-medieval levels had been truncated, leaving medieval levels fairly close to the existing ground surface of the courtyard. A layer of flints in the mortar base was found at a depth of about 600m and this was interpreted as a late medieval yard surface. century maps, but a small lens of post-medieval demolition material from Trench 1 could have been associated with the destruction of this building. Excavation of these trenches revealed a significant level of medieval activity within the lowest garden terrace. This included a possible hearth, a possible rubbish pit and a terrace or house platform, as well as post-medieval post hole. The higher terrace which contained Trench 2, had been previously stripped down to its natural substrates during terracing operations. The backfilled quarry was overlain by an intermixed soil horizon, characteristic of horticultural activity and corresponded to land use indicated on post-medieval maps. Archaeological features and deposits identified above this soil horizon were of a late post-medieval and modern date, corresponding to activity in the rear garden of the existing property. No trace of natural geological deposits were observed and no deposits likely to have been earlier than the 18th century were encountered. The deposits observed seemed more likely to have represented deposition within an open area. Clearly the depth of overburden was not the result of backfilling of bomb craters, as no 20th century material was encountered in trench one and earlier structures survived in trench two. The structures were thought to have dated to the mid-late 19th century. Roman pottery was recorded towards the base of trench one and was thought to have been especially significant. Previous excavations in the area had already indicated the likelihood of Roman cultural material, however, this material may well have been imported from elsewhere within the city or its environs. The site was located in an area of considerable archaeological potential; Palaeolithic artefactual material was frequently found in association with the Dartford Heath-Boyn Hill gravel deposits which underlay the site. The site had already been partially disturbed leaving deep sections into the natural chalk adjacent to West Hill House (running north-south and east-west) which were recorded both photographically and by measured drawing with notes made on the geology. The quantity and disposition of the gravel deposits exposed at the site seemed to indicate that the extent of the Boyn Hill gravel, as shown on the Geological Survey, was reasonably correct. There was no evidence for intrusive or cut archaeological features, either within the excavated trench, or in the exposed sections and no artefactual material was recovered. The site was previously evaluated in 2001 and these earlier works established the presence of prehistoric remains at the site. The 2005 evaluation comprised the excavation of a further five trenches. The results of this trenching showed that the site in one trench had been severely disturbed, probably by modern building activities. Undisturbed geological gravels were encountered in the other four trenches. In one of these trenches, located in the south-west corner of the site, probable prehistoric archaeological remains were revealed. The results of this evaluation supported those of a previous partial evaluation of the site, which found a concentration of prehistoric archaeological remains in the western third of the site. An archaeological field evaluation found evidence for natural sand across the site. In the south of the site natural sand was present immediately under tarmac surfaces and it appeared that horizontal truncation had occurred in this area of the site. The evaluation found no evidence to suggest human occupation or use of the site prior to the late post-medieval period. To the south of the site foundations associated with 19th century additions to the 18th century farm were recorded whist in the west of the site a yard surface dating to the same period was recorded. Elsewhere on site, two possible ponds and a pit dating to the late 19th century were recorded whilst a number of masonry foundations dating to the 20th century and associated with the continued use of the site as a farm and/or dairy in the last century were recorded. Three evaluation trenches were excavated representing a 5.7% sample of the proposed development area. In addition, an assessment of the existing standing building, formerly the headquarters of the Sandgate Sea Cadets, was undertaken. The site lay adjacent to Sandgate Castle, constructed in 1539 and documentary sources indicated that during the later 18th century the site was used a shipyard. No archaeological evidence for related activity survived within the study area. Part of a north-south aligned wall and upright War Department marker stone were observed in trenches two and three. Both were shown on the 1st Edition OD map of 1872 and were probably contemporary with later modifications of Sandgate Castle during the Napoleonic period. A compacted and sloping surface possibly represented part of a slipway or access point to the beach. No other archaeological remains were identified. An assessment of the existing standing building combined with documentary survey, confirmed its original foundation in 1845 as the Sandgate National School. The building also displayed military modification, following its adoption by the First Cinque Ports Volunteer Artillery No.8 Company from 1866, when it was adapted for use as a drill hall and again, from the 1940s to the present, by the Sandgate Sea Cadets. An archaeological evaluation was undertaken involving extensive trenching, however, no significant archaeological features were found. A possible bomb crater and modern well were located. The almost total lack of artefacts across the site confirmed there was a general absence of archaeological activity on this area. Only a modest group of flint flakes and fire-cracked flints in trench one were of interest. This could have suggested a casual use of this area in prehistoric times, or the presence of a related settlement site beyond the boundaries of this development. The WWII air-raid shelters on the east side of the site were deeply and largely outside the development. The two entrances were just within the site boundaries and fell in the rear gardens of the houses designated here. In view of this extensive examination of the site, no further archaeological excavation was needed, but a modest watching brief at the far north end of the site may have been appropriate. Thirty-one machine excavated trial trenches were located within the development area. Twenty trenches were found to contain archaeological features which included pits, post holes, ditches and a single cremation burial. The majority of the features probably dated to the later Bronze Age or earlier Iron Age periods, although pottery and flint work recovered from a number of deposits suggested earlier Neolithic activity or occupation in the area. The distribution of the features suggested two main areas of activity, the northern end of the access road and a larger area encompassing the central part of the building

footprint and the southern end of the access road. Two ditches were identified at the southern limit of Area CD which probably represented the south-western limit of the activity in this area. The majority of the flint work recovered was in a fresh, unpatinated condition and contained several cores and core fragments suggesting that flint working and possibly extraction was taking place, if not within the development area then very nearby. The results of the environmental sampling suggested that plant remains in the form of cereal grains, and more importantly cereal chaff, were well preserved on the site, and therefore the potential existed to provide data on prehistoric crop production and environment. The remains may also have been suitable for radiocarbon dating. Levels taken on the site suggested that any development of the site would at best severely truncate, and more probably completely remove, the archaeological resource. Nine out of a total of 12 proposed evaluation trenches were cut across the area of development; standing buildings and other constraints (including the presence of slow worms) precluded a full investigation. A number of the trenches revealed sequences of probable river terrace gravels which were subsequently investigated in deep sondages. These deposits may possibly have been significant in terms of Quaternary geoarchaeology, but were generally at great depth and did not yield any evidence for palaeoliths or environmental material. The deposits were unlikely to have been seriously affected by the development. The gravels were sealed by thick deposits of head, which formed the underlying natural subsoil. precluded a full investigation at this stage. No significant archaeological features were revealed, however, a number of the trenches revealed intact sequences of possible river terrace gravels, not recorded by the Geological Survey, which may possibly have been significant in terms of Quaternary geoarchaeology. These were subsequently excavated in four geoarchaeological test pits. Sedimentological and lithological analyses of gravels confirmed that they were of fluvial origin and their altitude suggested that they were part of the second terrace of the Medway as mapped in the Maidstone district. Despite considerable sampling, little artefactual or environmental evidence was recovered from the gravel. This material existed just below the modern ground surface. In light of this, it was concluded that there would be an adverse permanent impact on the surviving archaeological resource where the proposed development required that subterranean construction activity was to occur. Further archaeological mitigations was recommended. [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 2005/144 Archaeological periods represented: PM, MD

The presence of high status fragments of stonework indicated the presence of a substantial masonry building, but no evidence of this had yet been identified. There was little evidence for activity on the site in the later medieval or post-medieval periods. The land was incorporated within a deer park in in the 16th century and probably remaieds as pasture after its disemparkment. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD

Archaeological Evaluation Cullen, K Bristol : Cullen, K, 2005, 16pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Cotswold Archaeology An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the redevelopment of the western limits of the hospital site. Despite the large degree of modern terracing that had taken place throughout the hospital site, the western areas of the proposed development area remained little affected, with intact former topsoil horizons visible in many of the trenches. The paucity of archaeological features or deposits excepting possible Roman ditches in Trench 10, indicated this area was not intensively utilised during the Roman period. The ditches were likely to have been for drainage and may have formed part of a field system on he periphery of the pottery production centre to the north-west. That only a few degraded sherds of pottery were retrieved further suggested that this area was sited away from the main focus of Roman activity and reflected the lack of features or deposits identified in previous archaeological investigations on the site. Four trenches were dug within the building and one trench was in the yard to the south. A similar sequence of deposits was exposed in all trenches except the northern trench, which was on the street frontage. In this trench there was a series of four late-medieval layers and a north-south wall of re-used limestone rubble bonded with brickearth, which was likely to have been late medieval or Tudor. Pre-18th century deposits were exposed in every trench. The southern part of the site was probably used as fields or orchards in the period AD1100-AD1500. By this time the Tudor buildings were placed on the street frontage and it was possible that medieval buildings lay beneath them. Activities in the backyards of these properties included industrial processes in the 17th/18th century. A small trench was excavated between two cellars along the street frontage, but only modern features and undisturbed natural brick-earth were recorded. Observations of foundation excavations revealed two Saxon, four medieval and five undated features. The finds included middle Saxon and medieval pottery, burnt daub, iron objects, iron working waste and animal bones, as well as post-medieval and modern material. A report on the faunal remains was included. The high proportion of medieval to middle Saxon features was relatively unusual in Hamwic - it was comparable to the adjoining site (62-65 St. Mary Street), where six middle Saxon and 12 medieval features were recorded, but contrasted with other nearby sites (notably the Voluntary Action Centre and Kingsland Market), where no medieval features were found. The evaluation comprised the excavation and recording of six trenches. The archaeological evaluation revealed archaeological features of Romano-British date in Trench 1 on the flat ground at the top of the hill. ditched field systems, dated mostly from the Late Bronze Age period. A Middle Bronze Age cremation urn was recovered from the centre north of the site. A strip of low lying alluvial clay running across the centre of the site revealed a preserved waterlogged landscape and the remains of four probable Bronze Age burnt mounds. Three large ditches were also found across the site, two of which dating from either the Late Bronze Age and one possibly from the Roman period, which could potentially be associated with the Roman Chichester Dykes earthworks system. An enclosure dated from the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age was discovered in the centre, north of the development site. A second possible enclosure dating to this period was revealed in the centre south of the site, and a Late Bronze Age stock enclosure was located in the centre of the site. Traces of an 18th century barn, known from cartographic evidence were found in the northern part of the site. Finally, a previously unknown EEII Anti-tank trap was traced through several trenches in the southern half of the site.
