Objectives for today:

• Review progress in school and share the examples of practice that are developing.

• Consider how the outcomes of APP can be recorded and monitored and used to underpin curriculum development

• Consider how APP can be evolved and imbedded across your science department

Outline for this afternoon

• Session 1: Introduction and review progress

• Session 2: Recording and monitoring APP

• Session 3: Planning and adapting APP

• Session 4: Next steps – evolving practice

Getting started

• What do you know about APP?

• Complete the quiz on APP – how expert are you?

• Answers

Mid course task - Feedback

• In October:– “Complete an APP activity with a class and bring

along some evidence to show how the pupils have responded at different levels”

• Work in table groups. • Share the outcomes of the work you have done in

school.• Each table should agree 1 outcome to feedback to the

rest of the group.

PMIQ

• In table groups discuss how the implementation of APP is happening in your department.

• Note Positives / Minuses / Interesting points and Questions (separately) on postit notes and place on posters around the room

How are you doing it now?

• On tables discuss how you are presently recoding and monitoring APP in school

– What are the lessons learnt so far?

– What do you see as the next steps?

Remember APP is

• about the teachers professional judgement and does not replace all other forms of assessment;

• Supports the assessment processes and is not independent of it;

“Feeding the machine”

APP is NOT a test completed at regular intervals

APP is NOT a portfolio per pupil

Task: Planning an activity to assess pupil progress

• Look at the spreadsheet for the class recording progress against APP criteria

• Consider how you would move the pupils in the class forward in 1 AF

Task – continued

• Draft a lesson plan accordingly, incorporating lesson objectives, outcomes linked to APP criteria and teaching and learning activities

• Record your lesson plan on flipchart paper
