“Future-Proof” Your New Building

Key Issues to ask for…

• Understand the benefits of fibre optics Vs conventional cabling

• Can a hybrid copper/fibre solution work for you?

• What services are you looking for?

• What is the technology offered? Are there options?

• What space / room facility do you require?

• What are the regulations / guidelines?

• What is the cost?

• How long to implement?

Key Issues to ask for…

• how many tenants do you expect to sign up for your services? ESSENTIAL

• What minimum (passive) infrastructure do you require at this stage?• Fibre Distribution Box, Vertical Riser Cable, cable tray, etc.

• Is there Dark Fibre in your area/neighborhood? ESSENTIAL

• Has your ‘Home been passed’? At what phase?

• Is it cheaper to cable the whole building or just areas where your 1st subscribers are?

• How can you connect new tenants who ask for fibre services?

• Have you considered future maintenance cost (pending solution offered)?

Broadband Technologies Compared

Shannon Comms Theory determines the maximum achievable bit rate over a transmission medium as a function of the frequency-specific signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. The SNR decreases with

increasing attenuation and increasing noise from crosstalk

Services Offered: FTTH or FTTB Advantages for Developer/ Property Owners

• Several ISPs or Service / Installation contractors cause wiring chaos in building

• Having a clear demarcation point (FTTB/ FTTH Network) to connect to

• Customers are willing to pay more to access a ‘fibered property’

• In new developments, even when copper is installed in parallel, the Take – Rate

for fiber is very high, in the 60-70% range.

• Freedom for customer to source own services (triple-play)

• FTTH backbone can be used for various value added services e.g. CCTV, Building

Management Systems, Home Automation, IoT, Utility Monitoring, etc.

Fibre to the Distribution Point (FTTDp)

• This solution has been recently proposed.

• Connecting the POP to the Distribution Point via the optical cable and then

from the Distribution Point to the end-user premises via existing copper

infrastructure.

• The Distribution Points could be a hand-hole, a drop box on the pole or

located in the basement of a building.

• This architecture could support VDSL or G.Fast technology for a short last mile,

normally less than 250m.

• G.fast has many similarities to G.now in terms of deployment scenarios and costs.

• Mainly used as an improvement for Vectoring (a technology highly effective at reducing

the amount of ‘cross talk’ that can interfere with the speeds over copper wires).

• In theory, G.FAST enables 1 Gbit/s ultrafast bandwidth access over a twisted copper pair.

• G.fast is expected to be widely available between 2016 and 2018.

• Otherwise, G.fast also will require management functions for power control, for

mitigating interference sources in the home environment, and for coexistence with

legacy VDSLs.

Standardization

Recommended Terminology – FTTH Council

In January 2009 the FTTH Council has released a document that well defines terms used by all the FTTH Councils (North- America, Europe, MENA andAsia-Pacific).

To ensure clarity and consistency in communication there should be a common set of Terms, Definitions and Abbreviations.

Study Group IEC SB4/ACT consisting of experts from IEC, ITU-T, CENELEC group recommended to use FTTH council specs as a reference for:

• FTTH / FTTx Network Scheme

• FTTH / FTTx Network Elements

FTTx Buildings Specs -2016(ISO/IEC/ITU-T/EN)

• High-level review was undertaken with kind support from Libnor

• Lebanese standards from LIBNOR, no fiber optic standards were identified, only low current standards without specifying its relation with telecoms

• Initial search identified the following:

• ISO: ICS Standard- ICS 33: Telecommunications.

• 33.180 Fibre optic communications• 33.180.01 Fiber optic system in general• 33.180.10. Fiber and cables• 33.180.20. Fiber Optic interconnecting devices• 33.180.30. Optic amplifiers• 33.180.99. Other fiber optic equipment

• ISO/IEC, two standards were found as follows:• ISO/IEC under IT - Generic cabling systems ISO/IEC - 11801- Int’

standard• ISO/IEC under IT - Implementation and operation of Subscriber

premises cabling- ISP IEC 14763 - Int'l Standard

FTTx Buildings Specs (ISO/IEC/ITU-T/EN)

• ITU-T has 3 main levels of specs but mostly related are:

• G65x series

• For the IEC/EN, several standards for' Fiber Optics' or 'FTTH (Fibre-to-the-home)', both Int'l and Regional, extracted from FTTH Council Europe handbook (Feb. 2015).

• In specific, IEC 60794-2 for Indoor Fibre Cables.

• ETSI / CENELEC / ANSI / IEEE / etc. specs.
