BY THE WAY ...

• Recently we received a check in the amount of $32,170.81 from the Diocese, representing our 2015 rebate from the Diocesan Capital Campaigning Partners in Faith. Over the past three years we have received $146,249.12 as our parish rebate from the campaign. I am very grateful to all our parishioners who have so faithfully kept up with their pledges and donations to the campaign. They have allowed us to continue to address long-term repairs, especially to our beautiful church. I encourage those who have not kept up with their pledges to try to continue the process of fulfilling their pledge for the good of the wider diocesan Church, as well as our own parish.

• Reconciliation: Did you receive ashes on Ash Wednesday? Good for you, if you did! It takes a little bit of an effort. But Ash Wednesday is only "part one" of the process of Lent. Think about the words that were spoken as the ashes were imposed: "Repent and believe in the Good News. " Now we have to get busy with "part two" - the Sacrament of Penance.

Along with all the other churches of the Paterson Diocese, Saint Anthony's is once again participating in the Come Home to the Father program. Sacramental Confession will be available in Saint Anthony's Church (and every other church of the Paterson Diocese) every Monday night of Lent from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M. Make sure you make the effort to get to "part two."

• Theology Wednesdays: Catholicism is a very holistic approach to faith - one that tries to involve all our senses. This can occasionally lead to a sense of idolatry, or a sense that created things have replaced God as the center of our hearts. The first of our Theology Wednesdays will explore that balance, as we look into the Sacramentals - the things that help us to pray.

The Theology Wednesday sessions will run for one hour -7:30-8:30 P.M. - in the church, with an approximately 40 minute presentation, followed by time for questions. The upcoming topics are as follows:

March How are Seminarians Trained Today? Seminarian Andrew Dutko will talk about priestly vocations and seminary life. March Catholicism and the Fundamentalist Churches March Saints of Mercy - Holiness and the Jubilee Year of Mercy

• Bible Study - Sister Betty Ann Martinez, F.M.A. continues to host an eight- week Bible Study on Friday mornings, 10:00-11 :30 A.M. (More detailed information can be found elsewhere in this bulletin).

• Today, and for the next two Sundays, our two candidates for adult baptism at the Easter Vigil will participate in the Rite of Scrutinies in preparation for the Easter Sacraments. These will be celebrated as follows: February 28 - 8:30 AM Mass

March 6 -10:00 AM Mass

I invite all our parish to join in prayer for our catechumens, Miranda Meador and Anna Michaca, and for the other adults also preparing for First Eucharist and Confirmation.

• The Shape of Lent II - Traditionally the ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from the burning of the palms from last year's Palm Sunday observance. The use of ashes as a sign of penance and mortality is very ancient and goes back to Old Testament times (Daniel 9:3; Jonah 3:6). In the United States it has been customary to receive them on the forehead in the sign of a cross. But in much of Europe (and for clergy in general) it is more common to have the ashes sprinkled on top of the head. Originally only those embracing a penance in preparation for sacramental absolution on Easter would receive ashes, but by the tenth century, the practice extended to everyone.

One of the traditional Lenten practices is fasting. Today, this is formally embraced by the entire Church by refraining from meat (abstinence) on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent; and by fasting (only one full meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In earlier times up until the 1960s, the Lenten fasting rules were more complex, involving days of partial fast on all the weekdays of Lent which translated into meat only at one meal a day. Fasting and abstinence are a form of "mortification" - dying to oneself - that is embraced during the Lenten Season to bring us back to our real Christian identity.

There are two other aspects of Lenten fasting that are often overlooked. In earlier centuries, especially in northern Europe, the long winter months in which Lent begins would be also be the time when food was least abundant. New crops had not yet been planted, hunting in the deep snows was often impossible, and stores of food that had been laid up during harvest time in the Fall were beginning to run low. The embracing of fasting and abstinence by the entire community during Lent also could be an act of charity because it helped insure that food supplies would be able to last for the entire community until Spring. This is also emphasized by the custom in many Eastern European countries (Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, Croatia, etc.) of bringing the foods for Easter breakfast to be blessed on Holy Saturday. These foods, used for breakfast on Easter Sunday morning, would not only "break fast" that people had embraced during Lent, but they were also blessed so that people would not get ill from suddenly eating quantities of rich foods that they had not eaten in many weeks. (More next week).

• Last year I received a sharply-worded letter of complaint about a funeral. In particular, the anonymous correspondent felt that, given the stature of the deceased in the community, I had not done justice to their life. The writer felt that I should have done more research into the person's life so that I could have spoken more extensively on their accomplishments. The letter came to mind last Saturday when I watched the funeral of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Justice Scalia's son, Father Paul Scalia, began his homily, which even the New York Times deemed "eloquent," in this way:

We are gathered here because of one man. A man known personally to many of us, known only by reputation to even more. A man loved by many, scorned by others. A man known for great controversy, and for great compassion. That man, of course, is Jesus Christ!

Page 5: Bulletin February 28 2016 pub.pub (Read-Only) › 12069 › bulletins › 20160228.pdfFrancesco Sibilia Paula Bayley 10:00 AM Antonia DiScola Angelo DiScola, Clorinda DiScola Tino

5

Now that is a funeral homily! Sometimes people will comment to the priest about the "eulogy" he gives at a funeral. However, the priest is actually forbidden by the instructions for Christian Burial to give a eulogy. He must preach a homily. Father Scalia has given all of us a great example about the difference between the two. At a Catholic funeral we gather not to praise the deceased, but rather to thank God for their life and to pray to God for their swift journey to heaven. To read the entire homily for Justice Scalia, go to the website of USA Today.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

First Reading: Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15 Moses came upon a burning bush, when God called out to him. God told Moses that he had seen the suffering of his people in Egypt, and intended to lead them from their captors to a land of milk and honey. Moses asked what he should say if the Israelites should ask what God wished to be called. God replied, "I am who am."

Second Reading: I Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12 Paul describes how the people were led into the desert by Moses, yet many of them were struck down by God. He warns that this should serve as an example not to give in to wicked desires or we may suffer the same downfall.

Gospel: Luke 13:1-9 Jesus says that an individual's misfortune does not mean that their sins were greater than someone else's. He warns that without repenting, all sinners will meet the same end. He tells of a barren fig tree whose owner planned to cut it down. But a servant offered to give it special care for one year, and destroy it should it remain barren. This symbolizes God's patience toward us.

Ministries & Organizations

Prayer Group will meet this Monday at 7 PM in the chaplaincy center. Thank You!

We're looking for a few good Catholic men. We meet every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 7:30PM at the St. An-thony’s School Library. If you are interested in joining the Knight's please contact Kevin Duffy at 201-956-3272. The Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Name Society are two long-time organizations for men in our parish. Both groups are in need of rejuvenation. Both groups have long played an active role in many aspects of the life of our parish, often providing muscle and money for many different projects of outreach efforts. But in order to continue to participate at that level, they need the energy and the talents of a new generation of Catholic men. The history of the Knights of Columbus, has been a long and glorious chapter in the life of the American Church and the Universal Church.
