SALMON IMPORTER SECURES MARKET SHARE, PRICE STABILITY WITH NEW

SMOKEHOUSE

High salmon prices in Europe in recent years prompted a Hong Kong importer to set up its own

smokehouse, allowing it to significantly increase volumes and market share. When soaring prices for

imported smoked salmon threatened its market share in 2015-2016, the Fine Food Company decided to

take the margin hit in order to hold onto customers.

According to the company representative, their smokehouse The Victoria Island Smokehouse uses wood

imported from Germany. Aside from salmon, they also market the firm’s own Aristocrat brand of

caviar, which is sourced from China and Iran.

The company targets their sales pitch at chefs of international hotels in Hong Kong and Macau.

INDONESIA RELOCATION OF JAPANESE FISH FIRMS FROM THAILAND EXPECTED

As a result of Indonesia's tough measures against illegal fishing, a number of Japanese fish-processing

firms have expressed their commitment to relocating their factories from Thailand to Indonesia, said the

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister. According to the Minister, one of the firms that has already

confirmed its plans to relocate its factory is Itochu. She did not mention the other firms that had

expressed interest in constructing factories in Indonesia, but she said those fish-processing companies

already knew that currently Indonesia had an overwhelming level of fish production.

Another benefit of the relocation of Japanese firms to Indonesia, she added, was that Japanese business

people might help Indonesia decrease tariff barriers set by the Japanese government.

The minister said Itochu would also expand its business in Indonesia though its subsidiary, PT Aneka

Tuna, as it eyed the Indonesian market.

MALAYSIA BOAT SET ABLAZE AS IT TURNS UP HEAT ON ILLEGAL FISHING

For the first time, Malaysia set fire to a foreign boat for fishing illegally in its waters as it turns up the

heat on trespassing trawlers. The boat was set fire at sea off the coast of the northern state of Kelantan,

the first time Malaysian authorities have resorted to such action, according to the Malaysian Maritime

Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The MMEA did not specify the boat’s country of origin.

Porous maritime borders are a constant problem for Malaysia and its Southeast Asian neighbours,

which struggle to keep foreign fishing vessels from operating illegally in their waters. In early 2016,

more than 100 foreign fishing vessels were detected off the Borneo state of Sarawak, while in April

Indonesia sank 81 mostly foreign boats caught illegally fishing in its waters.

MMEA Director-General of Operations said Malaysian authorities had so far sunk 285 foreign fishing

vessels nationwide to create artificial reefs, but said the method has not made a “deep impact” on

foreign fishermen operating illegally in Malaysian waters.

VIETNAM SEAFOOD OUTPUT HITS 2.3 MILLION MT IN EIGHT MONTHS

The country’s total production of caught fish in the first eight months of 2017 reached nearly

2.3 million MT, up 3.4% year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural

Development. The ministry attributed the increases to the favourable weather conditions and localities’

support to fishermen.

However, it said that tuna catch in Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa dropped nearly 17% in August

to only 832 MT. In the first eight months of this year, total tuna catch was estimated at 14,901 MT, up

10.6% year on year.

Binh Dinh took the lead with 8,508 MT, a rise of 18.9%, followed by Phu Yen 3,410 MT (up 6.1%) and

Khanh Hoa 2,983 MT (down 2%).

FIRST-EVER DETECTION OF SHRIMP DISEASE IN US RAISES INDUSTRY CONCERNS

Officials in the United States have reported the country’s first-ever case of Early Mortality Syndrome

(EMS), raising concerns from shrimp industry leaders about what the government will do to contain it.

The disease targets farmed Penaeid shrimp, usually affecting shrimp postlarvae within a month of

stocking. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of

Health the disease, technically called acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease, has a nearly 100%

mortality rate.

Officials detected EMS in Cameron County, Texas in late July, according to a public affairs specialist

for the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The state’s southernmost county, whose

county seat is Brownsville, sits on the Mexican border. The Specialist said the USDA’s only authority

was to report the case to the World Organization for Animal Health. However, the agency is working

with the University of Arizona’s Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory to collect mud samples for testing.

In addition, APHIS has reached out to shrimp producers to discuss the impact on trade. No shrimp

remain on the detected site, she said, noting Texas Parks and Wildlife officials quarantined the facility

on 18 August.

EMS was first found in southern China seven years ago, and it had spread to other parts of Asia in the

following years. In 2013, the disease ravaged the Mexican shrimp industry, causing production to drop

by about 50%. That same year, the Southern Shrimp Alliance sent a letter to officials with the

Department of Agriculture, the Department of Commerce and the Food and Drug Administration

expressing concerns about the impact EMS could have on the domestic industry.

MIDDLE EAST

OMAN

OADC as a major player in the rapidly evolving fish farming sector in the Sultanate. According to a key

official of the state-owned entity, the new investments will build on OADC’s successful maiden project

that commenced operation at Qurayat in Muscat Governorate earlier this year.

OADC’s first aquaculture investment at Qurayat that has been in operation for more than 6 months has

a capacity to produce 3,000 MT of kofar (sea bream) per annum.

A similar project, a capacity of around 6,000 MT per annum, is also planned at Qurun in South Al

Sharqiyah Governorate. Also on the anvil is a major hatchery with a capacity to produce 15 million

juveniles of a fin fish species. Finally, at Beemah, OADC plans to invest in a cage farm project of a

capacity of around 3,000 MT.

A masterplan for aquaculture development in the Sultanate, formulated by the Ministry of Agriculture

and Fisheries, envisages an annual output of around 200,000 MT of farmed fish by the year 2040,

alongside the creation of some 11,000 additional jobs for Omanis.

WORLD GLOBAL FISH INDUSTRY SET TO SCALE RECORD IN 2017

The world fish trade is forecast to hit an all-time high this year, helped by the economic recovery in key

European importers, as well as high prices of popular fish such as salmon, according to the UN Food

and Agricultural Organization. The value of the global fish trade is expected to rise more than

US$ 150 billion this year, an increase of about 7% compared with 2016, putting 2017 on course to

eclipse the previous record of US$ 149 billion in 2014 as demand for salmon and shrimp increases, said

the FAO.

Fish has been the largest traded food commodity, supported by the growth in aquaculture, which has

been the fastest growing food production sector over the past 20 years. Rising incomes in developing

countries has spurred greater consumption of meat and fish. Compared with most other agricultural

businesses, such as grains, fish producers have offered higher returns.

Fish production is expected to continue to grow thanks to fish farming, according to the FAO. The

global aquaculture market is expected to continue growing at four to 5% a year over the next decade,

with global farmed fish production forecast to expand a third by 2026.

Cont’d However, growth in aquaculture is expected to bring further challenges to the industry that is affected

by problems such as disease and pests. Prices have remained relatively high and experts warn that

further investment in new farms and technologies is likely to raise costs for the aquaculture industry.

NEW STUDY: FUKUSHIMA RADIATION NOT IMPACTING MIGRATORY FISH

When the Fukushima power plant released large quantities of radioactive materials into nearby coastal

waters following Japan’s massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami, it raised concerns as to whether eating

contaminated seafood might impair human health, not just locally but across the Pacific Ocean.

A new study (tinyurl.com/New-Fukushima-Study) by an international research team shows that those

concerns can now be laid to rest, at least for consumption of meat from migratory marine predators such

as tuna, swordfish, and sharks.

The team’s sampling of tissues from predatory fish and other large vertebrates collected across the

northern Pacific between 2012 and 2015 revealed no detectable levels of 134Cs, and 137Cs

concentrations that were generally consistent with background levels from above ground nuclear testing

during the 1940s and 50s. They collected the animals from waters near Japan, Hawaii, and California.

Japan A decline (-10.38%) of fresh/chilled salmon imports into Japan was seen during the first half of 2017. This was due to the

decrease in supply of Atlantic salmon from the top suppliers Norway and Canada. Imports of Pacific salmon on the other hand

has slightly increased.

The outbreak of sea lice in aquaculture farms in Norway early this year has affected the global supply of farmed Atlantic salmon.

Ecuador

Ecuador exported 21 738 MT of frozen fish (excluding fillets) worth US$ 33 million during the period January-

May 2017, according to the latest export bulletin of the National Fisheries Chamber. The figures represented a

year-on-year decrease of 7.8% in the value of frozen fish accumulated until May 2017; while in terms of

volume, there was an increase of 8.7%.

Mexico /

Japan

The Mexican government urged the country's producers to participate in the seafood trade mission held from

August 19th to 26th in Tokyo as part of the "Japan International Seafood & Technology Expo". The Support

Services for Agricultural Marketing Agency (ASERCA) stressed that in 2016 Mexico exported around US$ 30

billion worth of food products to the world, with Japan being the third destination with a total of US$ 10

billion. The main product exported is frozen bluefin tuna (also fresh), worth US$ 72.5 million, followed by sea

urchin, frozen shrimp and frozen octopus. The general coordinator of Trade and Export Promotion of ASERCA

reported that Baja California was one of the states that led this mission due to the diversity of marine species,

including bluefin and yellowfin, sea urchin, abalone, clam, sea cucumber, shrimp, lobster and oyster, products

highly in demand by the Asian markets, mainly Japan.

Peru

According to the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), the Peruvian fishing sector grew by 52% in June,

mainly due to higher anchovy landings for indirect human consumption and more fishing days. The

government is also estimating that the sector will grow around 65% by the end of 2017, due to good

oceanographic conditions, among other things. With this figure, the fishing sector now represents 0.7% of the

national gross domestic product (GDP). In addition, the landing of species destined for the frozen industry,

such as flying squid, shrimp, hake and tuna, among others, also increased around 242.7%.

Fresh/chilled sashimi tuna

Tsukiji fish market auction - the current landing volume lessened to 13 MT level with decrease local catches from northern waters

due to typhoon in last week; Okinawa-origin bigeye and yellowfin are now covering up for the supply shortage although the

volume are small. Meantime, sea-caught air flown Southern bluefin from Cape town (arrived 20pcs, 7th morning) and Jumbo

bluefin from Boston are arriving at 20pcs/day base. In addition, Norway-origin bluefin is arriving (7th morning, 30pcs), hence, the

recent prices have strengthened in general.

Frozen sashimi tuna market

Tsukiji fish market auction - the current landing volume in total has increased since the last reporting and the price movement

remained at the same level without much change. In addition, the summer vacation season is just over before the fall season

market begins.

WCPFC committee met at Busan, Korea (28 Aug - 1 Sept), and concluded to establish the new rules for bluefin fishing quota with

the amendments to Japan’s proposal - if the bluefin resources recovered and recognized with the possibility of over 75% on the

41,000 MT (the midterm target till 2024), the next fishing quota is to be expanded. However since the early recovery would not

be so easy, therefore, strict fishing management by MAFF was requested.

Raw material for canning and other uses:

Skipjack:

Average price landed at major fishing ports in Japan during Jan-Jun 2017 is 262yen/kg which is 30% up compared to the same

period of 2016 because of the big decrease in local catches. In addition, the huge demand from USA and EU markets made the

raw material prices increase.

The katsuobushi market in Japan has been facing the cost performance by the raw material cost hiked. Tsukiji katsuobushi

wholesaler made the price up by 200yen/kg and Japan leading katsuobushi producers are considering for the price by 5-25% up

(Yomiuri, newspaper).

Yellowfin:

Current Yaizu market seems to be strengthened considerably with the increased landing and having good catches. In addition, the

price movement is in upward trend supported by the constant demand from domestic processors.

Albacore:

Yaizu market seems to be steady with the constant supply from the fishing boats (summer albacore). Price movement has been

upward.

CONSENSUS

Vannamei shrimp is widely being used as part of the menu in restaurants as such bread-buttered, PD tail-on,

IQF PD, shrimp salad of fast food shops, family restaurants chains in general and hotels in resort area etc.

The cargo movement is heavily relying on the weather condition such as typhoons which is expected to

improve in the coming month. Although cargo movement for vannamei is sluggish, it is good for black

tiger.

IMPORTS Raw shrimp imports increased significantly during January – July 2017 compared to a year ago. Vietnam

was leading supplier to the market during this period overtaking India.

SUPPLY

India:

Raw material has been coming mostly in the larger sizes 8/12 to 16/20 and that shortage of sizes 26/30 and

31/40 down. This trend is likely to change soon as the larger sizes will taper down and there will be more

of 26/30 down. The 26/30 pnd tail-on is in short supply and there are times when instances where the

importer has paid the same price to 26/30 as of 21/25.

Catches have slowed down but this could be ploy from the farmers to push the prices. Packers have

sufficient orders and will continue to wait and see how the Christmas buying starts. Factories are reportedly

processing at 100 MT per day and companies have started going public. The response has been good.

It is a new trend for seafood exporters to move into vertical integration.

OUTLOOK Although demand remains good in the market, product movement is dependent on the weather conditions

which is expected to improve in the coming months.

US MARKET

Prices in US$ if not otherwise stated

18 September 2017

CONSENSUS

Market trend There is currently more supply in the US: imports plus US domestic landings have all increased compared to

last year. In fact, a record amount of shrimp may be available. In spite of this fact, US wholesale prices are

quite stable. This indicates that demand is very good, and consumption seems to be matching availabilities.

Analysts don't know yet what will be the midterm effects of the destructive storm conditions of Hurricane

Harvey in the South and Southwest areas. Property damage and human loss are severe. Heavy rains continue

and are spreading north.

Certainly, in some parts of the US, shrimp consumption will be at a minimum. However, this could be offset

by lower US domestic landings, because many vessels are unable to go out to sea.

IMPORTS Shrimp imports during January - July 2017 increased by approximately 30,000 MT from the same period in

2016 supported by higher imports from Indonesia, India, Thailand and Vietnam. Imports in the month of July

2017 was 8,189 MT more from the same period last year indicating a substantial improvement in demand.
