Whenever I ask my b’nei mitzvah or confirmationstudents, or even the Lunch and Learn attendees, whattheir favorite Jewish holiday is, inevitably, the majorityof them say, “Passover.” I don’t think it’s because theylove refraining from eating chametz for a week. I thinkit’s because this holiday, with its home-based rituals, evokes memories of sitting around beautifully adorneddining room tables filled with extended familymembers who may no longer be with us, anticipatingthat first bite of matzah and charoset on the Hillelsandwich, and waiting to see which person will endup with the wine-stained haggadah this year.

No matter the level of observance of our families orthe particular recipes which are the “must-haves” atour tables, there are common threads that are woventhroughout all of our seders: the theme of redemption, the four glasses of wine, the recitation of the tenplagues and the singing of Dayeinu, to mention a few.But what makes Passover most special is that each ofus adds our own family lore to the telling each year. Itis not just the story of the Exodus from Egypt that isretold at our seder tables, but it is the recounting of thetime that Aunt Sally’s usually fluffy matza balls cameout like hockey pucks, or the year that Grandpa forgotwhere he hid the afikomen, or figuring out which ofus are the wise children or the wicked children.

Adding our own family stories to thePassover narrative not only enriches theholiday observance for all of us, but alsohelps to keep alive the memories of thosefamily members who have passed. There may be a whole new generation of children whonever knew their great-grandmother, but they haveheard countless stories about her cooking and theylook forward to her brisket, which is now made byfamily members who are carrying on her tradition. Or

they may not have been around when cousin Sol wasfooling around and notoriously spilled the second cupof wine back in 1973, but each year, when we get topage 24, someone holds up the purple-stainedhaggadah and everyone gets a good laugh from thememory.

My dear professor of blessed memory, Dr. EugeneBorowitz, wrote about the seder and the haggadah:

“We Jews do not believe that ritesperform themselves, nor that their sacredpower is unleashed merely in the doing. And surely this is true of the command torejoice. Our contribution to this eleganttext must be the creation of delight. Onecannot give rules for being happy, whichmay be why the Rabbis limited theirinstructions about rejoicing. Havinggiven us this incomparable context inwhich to fulfill our duty, they left thepersonal side largely to us. For me,elation has to do with smiling, withexchanging glances, with an occasionalspontaneous comment about the text orthe company, with loving what we aredoing this evening and communicatingthat to everyone.”

May you all enjoy Passover celebrations rich in history, learning, love and laughter.

Warmly,Cantor Jodi Schechtman

Passover MemoriesAs a child, I always enjoyed Passover. Receivingmoney for finding a piece of matzah and eating signif-icant amounts of chocolate covered marshmallowsand sugar coated “fruit” slices were right up my alley.

As I got older, I realized that I likedPassover so much because it was one ofthe few Jewish holidays that we spent athome and not at temple, with manyfriends and family.

After Julie and I got married, Passover was the firstJewish holiday that we started hosting at our house. Atfirst, it was very odd to lead a Seder with my father andfather-in-law looking on, as they had led all thePassovers I was a part of, besides my college years. Idid my best to integrate the service so that all ourfriends and family (Jewish and non-Jewish) werecomfortable and could participate if they desired. Ifyou ask me, our Seder is well run and lasts anappropriate amount of time. My guess is if you ask mychildren and nieces and nephews, I am sure theywould tell you that the Seder takes too long.

For me, Passover means being with friends and family. It means horseradish, matzah, charoset and 4 cups of

wine. I recognize that I am very fortunate to have alarge and extended family in Albany to celebrate withand I look forward to hosting Passover each year.

As a Beth Emeth community we want toensure that everyone has a place tocelebrate Passover. If you are in need of a Seder to attend, please contactour programming director, Deb Sokoler, either [email protected] or 518.436.9761 and shewill attempt to find a Seder for you to attend. In addi-tion, I urge you to celebrate the Second Night Seder attemple graciously led by Cantor Schechtman and withall the food and Passover accompaniments preparedby our Brotherhood chefs.

From my family to yours, I wish you all a happyPassover.

Brotherhood

The story of my relationship with CBE began when Iwalked through the doors of Beth Emeth a year or twobefore my bar mitzvah. Two years later I wasconfirmed at Beth Emeth. That was probably the lasttime I was in a synagogue (with the exception of aHigh Holy Day service or two) until the birth of ourfirst daughter, Caitlan, several years later.

Our family joining Beth Emeth was pre-determined byboth my parents and my Aunt Barbara (of blessedmemory), who just happened to be Rabbi Shpeen’sExecutive Secretary at the time.

My Jewish identity was rekindled throughmy children, taking them to Jewish holi-day celebrations and later religious school. For many years I was just a carpool father and my wife,Debbie was the involved mom, joining the ReligiousSchool committee, craft fairs, fund raising, etc.

My level of involvement in Brotherhood and CBEchanged because Debbie was having difficulty beinginvolved at CBE due to health issues and our sonNathan was considering ending his Jewish studies afterhis bar mitzvah. To convince him to continue on, Ineeded to lead by example, so I became Vice Presidentof Brotherhood.

We are fortunate. Nathan completed confirmation, remained involved, and was the recipient of the CerfLevy award his senior year for outstanding leadershipand involvement in the religious school. Both ourdaughters, Caitlan and Rachel, became bat mitzvah, were confirmed and continue to teach Israeli dance inthe Jewish community.

Today, after almost five years of leading Brotherhood,I am still involved in the Beth Emeth community andworking on cultivating a new generation of Brother-hood leadership!

Thank you Beth Emeth for providing my family farmore than just a Jewish education.

The Renaissance GroupOur Signature Social Event

April 27 will be our 4th annual TRG Night at CapitalRep Theater. While there are many events that capturethe spirit and essence of TRG, such as through Dinnerand Learns, Torah Study, Museum Tours, and outdooractivities, none of the social events has been as popularas our night out at the theater.

This event gives us the opportunity toenjoy a meal, learn about a performancethrough a director’s talk, and get to enjoyand support our local theater - experienc-ing it together in a large but friendlygroup setting. These events don’t plan themselves, and we have tothank Debbie Ratner for her time and organizationalskills for putting together this wonderful night of enter-tainment. Let’s not forget, none of our events wouldtake place without the hard work of our small but com-mitted professional staff, and volunteers like Debbiewho, through their work, demonstrate their love of BethEmeth. So, if you will be with us on April 27, don’t for-get to thank Debbie for making this event possible. The Einhorn Center for Jewish EducationSeders Through the AgesPassover is the holiday commemorating our releasefrom the bondage of slavery. We celebrate freedom; our freedom from Egypt, ourfreedom to worship, our freedom to be together withfamily and friends retelling our story of the past.

The beauty of Passover is the mix oftraditions, old and new. For some, this istrying out a new Hagaddah, for others itis opening up discussions during the sederthat carry over into the mealtime. The seder allows for creativity. There are ways to makethe seder meaningful and engaging for all ages;

whether it be puppets for the plagues or discussionabout what or even who are plagues of today. Addi-tionally, there are so many great texts about Passover, teaching us about the structure of the seder andchanges that have taken place over time. For example, did you know the four questions asked today aredifferent than those found in the Mishna, our ancientrabbinic text? In the original set, there was a questionabout the preparation of the meat related to the Pesachsacrifice at The Temple in Jerusalem. Another entertain-ing text, I came across a few years ago, says, if youdon’t have Maror, bitter herbs, at your seder, you canpoint to your wife (my husband loves that one).

Besides all the food and togetherness, text and tales, Iappreciate the ironies of Passover. We have the Seder, which means order. Yet, all the harried preparations forPassover often evoke the most chaotic and disorderedfeelings. Also, this holiday about freedom and therejection of assimilation into Egyptian culture iscelebrated with an adopted tradition of a stagedRoman meal. The Romans would often feel overfilledand ill after their big meals. Many have been the yearsthe matzo balls were so hard, I could relate. (I’m fairlycertain my grandmother believed matzo balls shouldweigh you down like the yoke of slavery.)

Whichever traditions make your seder meaningful andwhatever discussions are sparked, I wish you all aZissen Pesach - Chag Sameach!
