Torah StudyTorah Study. Two words that can strike fear in theminds of those who hear it.

“Torah study? Not for me.” “I don’t know anythingabout the Torah!” “Everyone who goes to Torah Studymust be really well versed in Jewish texts.” “I don’teven know what the books of the Torah are.” “I’venever studied Torah before.” “I don’t read Hebrew.” “Ican read Hebrew a little, but I don’t understand it.” “Iwould be embarrassed to say anything in Torah study.I’m sure everyone else knows more than I do.”

So what is Torah study anyway? Torahstudy is one of the secret gems ofCongregation Beth Emeth. Every Saturday morning, a group of warm, welcomingfolks sit around the table in the library, schmooze a lit-tle (often with some yummy delight to munch on), andtalk about that week’s portion. Participation in theconversation requires no prerequisite Hebrew or study.

The leader chooses a small section of verses to be read(in English) and then the group shares their ownthoughts about what the verses might mean, or whywe even read them. Do they have relevance to ourlives today? Is there a lesson to be learned? Are we re-peating the same mistakes over and over?

Sometimes, the conversation reflectsTorah subjects like family relationships, sibling rivalry or friendship and loyalty.Other times, the discussion puts theTorah verses in historical context. Andthere are even times when the Torahstudy attendees go off in a completelydifferent direction altogether, bringing incurrent events or personal reminiscencesto the table.

So please, relax. Torah study is not scary. Torah studyis not elitist. Torah study is fun. Torah study is engaging.Torah study is social. Torah study is a beautiful way tospend a Shabbat morning. Please join us someSaturday morning at 9:30 am in the library. Butbeware - you may enjoy it so much, you’ll want tocome back again and again!

Warmly,Cantor Schechtman

Like many of you, I was shocked, scared and speechlessto learn that someone would have the audacity to entera synagogue on Shabbat and shoot and kill 11 innocentmembers of the Tree of Life synagogue for the solereason that they were Jewish. My immediate questionwas how does this happen? From my personal reactioncame the realization that I had to put my individualfeelings aside and that I needed to rally the clergy, professional staff, Officers and Board to ensure ourcongregation was not at risk.

We immediately decided that all events and programswould go on at the Temple. Business as usual mustoccur and our congregants embraced and welcomedthis position. I reached out to all the Board and PastPresidents and requested strong participation andpresence at Sunday school the next day so that ourmembers and students felt safe and welcomed into thebuilding. This was, of course, in addition to the height-ened security measures that were in place. A specialthank you is owed to Mayor Kathy Sheehan and the

Albany Police Department for the enhanced securityafforded to Beth Emeth.

As you are reading this article, we are a month removedfrom this horrific incident. Please know that security issomething that we take seriously and is addressed on aregular basis. Over the last few years, we have workedwith the Albany Police and the Jewish Federation ofNortheast New York, to implement and update oursecurity systems. This is in addition to participating inan active shooter response drill. Since Pittsburgh, wehave met with the Albany Police and the New York StatePolice and have also had the building reassessed forpotential enhanced security measures. We will continueto be diligent in our security efforts. Thank you toKathy Golderman and our House Committee ChairJessica Richer for their swift and prompt response to thecall for a review of all security measures.

In addition, thank you to the members ofthe congregation that reached out to me tooffer their help and assistance during thisdifficult time. Please do not hesitate tocontact me if you have any questionsregarding temple security.

I hope your families had a much needed and enjoyableThanksgiving and wish all of you a Happy Chanukah. It is an honor to serve as President of this historiccongregation.

We prepared gift bags for them onMitzvah Day, volunteered at the Trinity Health Allianceflu clinic for refugees, and donated money to theCapital District Women’s Bar Association refugee assis-tance program. The Refugee and Immigrant SupportServices of Emmaus (RISSE) is a family based center inthe Pine Hills area that supports newcomers as theybuild sustainable lives here. In addition to providingEnglish and job skills classes for adults, RISSE has arobust after school and summer youth program. HealingOur

World

The Renaissance GroupReflection on ReflectionsI’ve often wondered about life before mirrors. We cansee most of our own bodies directly but not our face.Seeing that first reflection in a clear pond or ice, yourown eyes gazing back at you, must have been a surrealexperience. Without mirrors, our concept of self musthave been less centered on our physical appearance.Move ahead to today, the ubiquitous selfie, the 10xmakeup mirror, we see ourselves more than even how, literally, we see ourselves. I understand the importanceof appearance, why it’s my job to make people lookbetter, but perhaps we should spend more time lookingoutward. When in need we don’t stare at the mirror, welook to the faces of our friends and loved ones. We findstrength when we look outward to the needs of ourcommunity and work toward Tikkun Olam.

TRG looks outward, toward buildingcloser friendships and a tighter knitcommunity. We will continue to provideprograms towards these ends but also tohave fun, to make us smile - that wonder-ful outward expression that also makesus feel good inside.

So, join us in 2019. Our programming can be foundon at www.BethEmethAlbany.org, our special TRGemails and in the Bulletin.

Here’s looking at you! Joe Schwartz, [email protected]

#SolidarityShabbat Shabbat Unplugged and The Blessing of the Newborns

With a full sanctuary, our Beth Emeth community came out in full force for #SolidarityShabbat. We shared joy and tears, weremoved by the presence and participation of interfaith clergy, rejoiced as we blessed our babies and our birthday celebrants, feltour hearts break as we named the victims of hate, were uplifted by the music of our band and our children, and found solacein the prayers read by our lay leaders.

The Einhorn Center forJewish Education

Recently, I had the fantastic opportunity to spend twoweeks in Israel. During my time, I attended the IsraelNext Edge Teaching Israel in the 21st Century Confer-ence, visited with my daughter who is spending asemester of high school studying there, connected withCBE friends that were on a tour, enjoyed a secondhoneymoon with my husband, and shared somequality time with old friends. Several friends live in thecity of Modi’in, a modern city, in the central part ofIsrael, located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Modi’in today is a vibrant, thriving Jewish communityof approximately 100,000 people. In ancient Israel, thetown of Modi'in was the place of origin of theHasmonean dynasty, often known for their most fa-mous son, Judah Maccabee. The Maccabean Revoltagainst the Seleucid Greeks began in Modi’in. And,ancient Jewish artifacts, believed to date to the Has-monean and First Temple periods have even beenfound throughout modern day Modi’in. Evidence ofthe Chanukah story!

In this month of December, the streets ofmodern day Modi’in, like all of Israel, will be filled with vendors selling deli-cious, oily, fried, jelly doughnuts tocelebrate the two miracles of Chanukah. With latkes, doughnuts and the lighting of the candles,we remember the miracle of the oil which lasted eightdays rather than the one expected. Since there is aspectacular, growing, Jewish community in Modi’inand Israel today, we also remember and celebrate theChanukah miracle of the Maccabean victory, the fewover the many! May it be a beautiful Festival of Lights for all, שמחאורים חג and may all your dreidels spins fall on Gimel!

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all,who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us tokindle the Chanukah lights.

Candles are added to the chanukiyah (menorah) from right to left but are kindledfrom left to right. The newest candle is lit first. (On the Shabbat of Chanukah, kindle the chanukiyah before the Shabbat candles.)

Light the shamash (the helper candle) first, using it to kindle the rest of theChanukah lights. As you do, say or sing:

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all,who performed wonderous deeds for our ancestorsin days of old at this season.

On the first night we add:

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shehecheyanuv'kiy'manu v'higianu laz'man hazeh.

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, she-asah nisimlaavoteinu v'imoteinu bayamim hahaeim baz'man hazeh

Chanukah, meaning "dedication" in Hebrew, refers to thejoyous eight-day celebration during which Jews commemoratethe victory of the Maccabees over the armies of Syria in 165B.C.E. and the subsequent liberation and "rededication" of theTemple in Jerusalem. The modern home celebration ofChanukah centers around the lighting of the chanukiyah, aspecial menorah for Chanukah; foods prepared in oil includinglatkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts); andspecial songs and games. To learn more, go to URJ.org.

How to Light the Chanukiyah:

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kid'shanub'mitzvotav v'tsivanu l'hadlik ner shel Chanukah.

How to Play Dreidel:Playing dreidel is a Chanukah tradition. The dreidel, or inHebrew, sevivon, means “to turn around.” The four letterson the dreidel, stand for the saying, Nes Gadol HayaSHam, meaning A Great Miracle Happened There.

Basic Rules:Each player begins the game with gelt or coins (or1m&m’s, cheerios, etc.).Before starting, each player puts one “coin” into the2center “pot.” This is done again every time the potbecomes empty.

Decide on a player to go first and move clockwise3around the circle. Each player gets one turn to spin the dreidel.4Depending on what side is facing up, follow these5rules:Nun: Nothing - player does nothingGimel: Get - player gets everything in potHey: Half - player gets half of pot (odd, round up)Shin: Put in - player puts one coin in potWhen one player has won everything, the game is over.6

How to Make Sufganiyot:INGREDIENTS2 1/4 tsp Active Dry Yeast 1 cup Milk2 ounces Butter, melted2 Eggs Yolks2 Tbsps Sugar

1-1/2 tsps Kosher Salt3-3/4 cups Bread FlourOil for Frying1 cup Sugar, for dusting2 cups of your favorite jam

DIRECTIONS•In a stand mixer, place the milk, yeast and sugar in thebowl of a stand mixer. Whisk in the eggs, yolks and salt. Addthe flour and melted butter and mix for 3-4 minutes.•Cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise for 1 hour (a little longer if it's cold in your kitchen).•Lightly oil and flour a parchment-paper lined cookie sheet. •On a lightly floured countertop, place the ball of dough andfold and flip over a few times, making a stronger ball. •Flatten with a rolling pin until about a 1/2" thick. Cut out 2" circles and place them on prepared cookie sheet. •Let rise for about 30 minutes.

•Fill a pot with 2" of oil and heat oil to 350º F. Once you getto 350º F, slide the donuts carefully into the oil, frying themone on side just to get to a golden color, then flipping justonce to get it the same color on the other side. Remove withtongs or a slotted spoon and place on a cooling rack.•Let the donuts sit for a little less than a minute before tossing, while still warm, in sugar •Fill a piping bag with jam. Punch a hole with the back of aspoon into each donut. Insert the tip of your piping bag intothe hole, then squeeze. Stuff with as much as you like!
