By Rabbi Alison B. Kobey We have had a tough couple of months. At the time

of writing this column, we do not have full access

to our building and we are still missing a school

administrator. There have been significant wildfires

in California, and there have been more shootings

around the country. I know that the tragedy in

Pittsburgh still weighs heavily on our minds. We

I know that many of you have reached out to me

Torah Parashiyot (and Writings) _____________

Upcoming Parashiyot and some of the many topics to consider:

December 1 – 10:30am- Vayeshev

(Genesis 37:1- 40:23)- Do you ever get the feeling

that something is about to happen (if this were on

TV, insert music of your choice)? Do you ever feel

that there is a bigger plan? Is your God relationship

like the one God has with Joseph?

December 8 – 9:30am- Miketz

(Genesis 41:1-44:17)- How do you know who to

trust? Do you remember your dreams? Why is this

Torah portion always read during Chanukah? How

does authority impact leadership?

December 15 – 9:30am- Vayigash

(Genesis 44:18-47:27)- Have you ever had a long

separation from someone and then reconciled? If

you could choose a sibling, what attributes would

you choose for him/her? When did you overcome a

difficult situation? Would you rather be Joseph or

Moses?

December 22 – 9:30am- Vayechi

(Genesis 47:28-50:26)- What does steadfast loyalty

mean to you? How are you (or are you not) loyal to

the covenant? Why does maintaining the strength

of the Jewish people matter? What kind of blessing

would you want from your parent?

December 29 – 9:30am- Shemot

(Exodus 1:1-6:1)- Can we be innocent bystanders

to something? When is the right time to take

action? How do you show courage? Who is your

favorite Biblical hero in this parashah? When does

someone really see “us” rather than “them”?

January 5 – 10:30am- Vaera

(Exodus 6:2-9:35)- When does self-convictions

turn to stubbornness? Can stubbornness be good?

What are the ten plagues of today? When have

your hopes been raised, only to be slammed down?

January 12 – 10:00am- Join us at Shabbat

services to hear about Parashat Bo.

January 19 – 9:30am- Beshalach

(Exodus 13:17-17:16)- Is it okay to rejoice when

someone struggles? How do we embrace our own

voices? How do individuals truly become a group

of people? Why does God sometimes get frustrated

when we call to God?

January 26 – 9:30am- Yitro

(Exodus 18:1-20:23)- When does the answer

“because I said so” work? Are rules good and do

they always have to make sense? How should a

leader lead? Who do you see as potential leaders?

President’s Column This year has brought a whole new meaning to

being grateful. I’m grateful that we have an

understanding and supportive group of

members. I’m grateful that we have such a

supportive community around us. And I’m

grateful that we have such dedicated supportive

staff.

As you know, the building was impacted by

mold this fall. The mold committee has been

working tirelessly to remediate the mold

problem as quickly as possible. Through their

volunteer efforts, we have hired staff to make

sure that we have uncovered all of the sources

of the mold and are taking the appropriate steps

to resolve the issues permanently. The

committee has spent many hours working on

communications, contracts, payments, and the

selection of vendors. Their dedication is

beyond admirable. On behalf of the entire

congregation, I want to THANK the mold

committee once again for all of your hard work

in leading us through this challenging time. As

of the time of this writing, we have a path

forward and believe that we will have the issue

resolved in the near term.

The Damascus churches stepped in to allow us

to use their space so we could continue to meet

and celebrate. I find this heartwarming and

encouraging. Heartwarming in that they were

willing to open their doors in our time of need.

Encouraging in that they felt that we were part

of their community and that we could work

together to find a solution. I think that it is

important that we find a way to thank our

neighbors. I’m seeking ideas from our

members on how we can let them know how

much their generosity is appreciated. If you

have any suggestions, please let me know.

Our professional staff, too, have had to work

extremely hard to keep our operations going.

They have had to find alternative venues, send

out additional communications and much more.

If not for their efforts, we would not have been

able to celebrate Shabbat and the many other

events that we had planned. Again, thank you

for your dedication and hard work through

these trying times.

During the High Holidays, I spoke to you about

our need to get more people involved.

Specifically, I reached out to ask for volunteers

to join the board of directors. I’m happy to

announce that the board of directors voted to

add Ilene Krom, Ray Lessans and Phil

Zeidman as new board members at large.

Please join me in thanking them for

volunteering and congratulating them on their

new role.

The board still is in great need of more

members. You do not need any specific skills

or knowledge. Just your interest and

willingness to help. Please contact me or any

of the board members to learn more.

We are also seeking people who are willing to

take on the roles of the treasurer and the

president. To serve as treasurer, we are

seeking someone who has some understanding

of finances and is able to dedicate a few hours

each month. We need someone now so that

they can start to be trained on all of the details.

If you have any interest, please reach out to

Andy Colby or me. As president, I cannot

serve for more than 3 years per our bylaws.

Next year will be my last year and we need

someone now who can be mentored to take

over. If you have any interest in this role,

please reach out to me.

Thank you very much for your continued

support!

Phil Dicken

Religious School Committee

Update ______________________________

The Religious School is offering new

programing this year: electives for 2nd-7th

graders. Students were given choices for

different types of hands-on Jewish learning:

cooking, drama, music, and nature, to name a

few. The students are really enjoying these

classes. Our Pre-K/K and 1st graders also have

opportunities to experience some of these

programs.

Several of our classes held their field trips this

fall. The 7th grade experienced the Holocaust

Museum. The 6th grade enjoyed the great

outdoors in Great Falls, Maryland.

The Religious School Committee will sponsor

a Coffee with the Rabbi and Religious School

Staff on Sunday, December 9, at 9:30am. If

you want to learn more or offer feedback about

Religious School, come enjoy bagels, treats,

and coffee with other parents, Religious School

Committee members, and Rabbi Kobey.

As we have seen, winter is here, so please note

that the Or Chadash Religious School does not

follow Montgomery County or other counties

regarding cancelling school due to the weather.

On Sundays, we will make a decision by

8:00am regarding school cancellation. On

Tuesdays, we try to make a decision regarding

school cancellation by 5:00pm. If school is

canceled, the message on the Temple

answering machine is changed to reflect the

cancellation. An email will be sent to each

family to notify them directly, and a message

will be sent via the Remind app. Cancellation

information will also be posted on the Or

Chadash Facebook page and/or website:

www.cong-orchadashmd.org. Please do not

call Temple or school staff at home to inquire

about cancellations.

The Religious School Committee is always

looking for new members! Please join us at our

next meeting in the synagogue on Sunday,

December 16 at 12:00pm.

L’Shalom,

The Religious School Committee

By Rabbi Alison B. Kobey (continued) The ADL has reassured me that there are no local

credible threats in our area. While we continue to

review our security procedures, I do feel safe,

and hope that you do as well.

As I mentioned before, I believe in the goodness

of humanity. After Pittsburgh, countless local

people reached out to me offering their

condolences, their prayers, and their strength to

us as the Jewish community. They brought us

flowers and offered us their support. We are

grateful to the police for their help and to our

neighbors near and far who offered their hearts in

sacred community.

We have extra reasons to count our blessings--

our friends at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and at

St. Paul’s Catholic Church who have been so

gracious in sharing their buildings with us. Soon

we will be fully back in our own sacred home,

stronger than ever. I hope you will join us in

worship, in study, and in community.

L’Shalom,

Rabbi Alison B. Kobey

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Date Selection It is hard to believe that we must start thinking

Rabbi Kobey, the students will experience

different versions of Jewish New York, including

Friday night Shabbat services with a progressive

Reform congregation, Saturday morning Shabbat

services with a traditional Reform congregation,

a trip back in time at the Tenement Museum, and

Ellis Island and/or the Jewish museum. Although

not exactly "Jewish," the students will also take

in a Broadway show, ride the famed NYC

subway system, and try a variety of NYC's food

offerings (while following the Or Chadash

kashrut policies). This trip is always educational

and memorable.

Coffee with the Rabbi and the

Religious School Committee Join us on Sunday, December 9 at 9:30am for

success. Also, we can use several volunteers to

help run the different stations (volunteers are

needed beginning at approximately 1:00pm).

Please stay tuned for a sign-up genius. Hope to

see you there!

Chanukah The first night is Sunday, December 2. Please

see page 14 for the blessings. On Friday,

December 7, we have a very fun Chanukah

Shabbat service. Everyone is invited to

B.Y.O.M. (bring your own menorah [and

candles]) and enjoy the many beautiful

chanukiyot (plural of Chanukah menorah).

Tu B’Shevat Seder Come celebrate one of Rabbi Kobey’s favorite

holidays! Tu B’Shevat is the birthday of the

trees and we celebrate by having a seder with

various fruits. We can travel (in our minds) to

Israel where we will really see the first signs of

spring with the almond tree blossoms. We

spiritually journey from winter to spring with

this ritual and eat a wide variety of fruit.

The seder is great fun and I hope you will join

in this wonderful holiday! This year it will be

Sunday, January 20 beginning at 6:30pm.

This is a congregational event, so we hope that

all of our members RSVP and join in this great

celebration! Please, please, please help us by

RSVPing no later than January 11 to Bita

Silverman, our Temple Admin. at (301)482-

1025 or [email protected].

Celebrating Simchas (Happy

Occasions) Celebrate your birthday with your Or Chadash

family. Be called to the bimah and receive a

special blessing and a birthday treat to mark the

occasion. We have birthday blessings every

month. For December, come on Saturday,

December 1 at 9:00am and for January, join us

on Friday, January 11 at 7:30pm.

We also celebrate anniversaries within our Or

Chadash family. Again, be invited onto the

bimah for a special blessing and fun

anniversary treat. This is also monthly with

anniversary blessings on Fridays at 7:30pm,

December 14 and January 18.

Do you have other simchas to share? Let

Rabbi Kobey know, so we can rejoice together.

“Pre-neg” We are trying something new! Before a few

Shabbat services, come early… have some

light appetizers and socialize! Meet someone

new! See old friends! Either way, we hope

you’ll join us! Pre-Neg will be at 7:00pm on

December 14. See you there!

Oneg Calendar _________________________ Thank you to our oneg sponsors! After every Shabbat service, there are delicious treats for everyone to

enjoy as we all chat and catch up. Oneg sponsors bring food before the service or donate to our oneg

organizer, so that this service is provided every week. Birthdays and anniversaries are great times to

sponsor an oneg. Family yartzeits are another meaningful time to sponsor an oneg.

All families are expected to host approximately twice a year. Each sponsor will receive an email indicating

what food and drinks to bring on their designated Shabbat date. If you have any questions, please email

Julie Swain at [email protected] or call 301-916-9214.
