Connecting with our Community Over the last week our school students and staff have contributed to our local community through a number of events.
Thirroul Seaside Festival Our Hospitality students, along with their Hospitality teachers, Ms Amber Haines and Ms Marie Comino-Gartrell, will be catering at the Art Show at the Thirroul Library Friday evening. Our students get valuable catering hours and contribute to our community.
On Sunday, Mr Nik Brankovic will be setting up a display of photos which showcase the Developing Future leaders Program. This program involves all ten schools in our Seacliff Community of Schools, and is sponsored by the Austinmer/Thirroul Lions Club.
Bulli Miners Commemorative Service Each year BHS’s Student Leadership Team are invited to attend the service and lay a floral tribute. This year our students were honoured with reading out the names of the 81 men and boys who died in the tragedy 131 years ago. I was very proud of them all. It is always a moving and well run ceremony with the Arcadian Lamplighters Male Choir singing.

Deputy Principal’s News
AUSTRALIAN YOUTH AEROSPACE FORUM “The Australian Youth Aerospace Forum is being held in Brisbane this year from the 9th to the 13th of July. This 5-day residential camp aims to provide Year 11 -12 students with an interest in aerospace with an insight into the career and training options available after high school. This year’s forum will include opportunities in Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace trades and traineeships, and, Pilot and Military Aerospace entry options. Students will experience professional aerospace first hand through exclusive industry site visits and discussions with key industry and academic leaders. It is the goal for AYAF to offer a diverse and welcoming environment for all students interested in aerospace. To increase this diversity and further encourage the participation of indigenous and female high school students, AYAF is offering one scholarship for each group. This will cover the full cost of accommodation and food, and depending on departure location of the student, most or all of the travel costs. If you qualify for both scholarships, we encourage you to apply for both. To find out more or to apply please visit: www.ayaa.com.au/AYAF-Bris. Applications are open from now until Sunday the 22nd of April.” Ms Robyn Lang

Science
Next term in Science students from Years 7-10 will have their Semester One examinations and should use the time before these examinations to read through their notes and ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and understanding of the coursework. Science examination dates are shown below: Year 10 – 31st May Year 9 – 31st May Year 8 – 5th June Year 7 – 5th June We encourage students to take the opportunity during the holidays to check their pencil cases and restock with the necessary pens, pencils and rulers so that they are fully prepared for Term 2. Year 12 have received their Mid-course Examination results and must now work to ensure that any areas of weakness are strengthened by targeted revision and consolidation. To all those students who have attained outstanding results well done, to others, I say continue to strive for your best and success will come to those that persevere. The students will have received extensive feedback on where marks were lost and how they can work towards improvement. Practising past HSC questions will also allow students to familiarise themselves with the types of questions they could encounter as well as refining their examination technique when constructing answers to the extended responses. Year 11 may also have various assessment items scheduled for Term 2. They must organise their time effectively and that includes the 2 week break in order to ensure that all tasks are completed to the highest standard. This includes completing any holiday homework given by their teacher. The curriculum in Science is being delivered in an exciting and innovative way, with our teachers displaying excellence. Some examples of this include Year 9S engineering of the perfect egg drop. Students measured the deformations of their devices after the drop, and used data analysis to compare which materials worked best overall. An analysis of whether parachutes slow the descent to resist the force of gravity was also made. The winning designs were from: Sami Ezzeddine-Gabbott Jack Dabrowski Aidan Grafenauer Parker Rex Davidson Jedda Ayling Lucy Bent-Genge Jacob Lyon Coby McDougall Celeste Kelly Zoe Gelder

How much energy does a Twistie have? This is what students in Year 7 have been measuring. They have made many observations in energy transformations including an investigation in the transfer from chemical (potential) to thermal (heat) and also calculated the heat given out by a Twistie heating water. This is one of the many exciting experiments conducted by our students. Our Science staff are always providing interesting challenges for our students.

PDHPE
AQUATICS PROGRAM
Throughout Term 1 all PDHPE classes Years 7-10 and PASS classes take advantage of our unique location and local resources
to participate in different aquatics and beach activities based at Bulli and Woonona pools and Bulli Beach.
Year 10 culminates with a Biathlon whereby the students put their running and swimming fitness to the test in a run to
Woonona pool, followed by 2 laps of the pool then a run back.
Students have especially relished the opportunity of swims on hot days and walks to the beach for their lessons. To their
credit, students will always get in the water irrespective of weather and temperature even if the conditions are not perfect.
Here are a few photos of Year 7 and Year 10 enjoying our environment.

Sport
This term, several Bulli High School students have taken the opportunity to
participate in yoga classes as part of the summer sport programme. Kathy
Gaudiosi is a local yoga teacher who runs KinKou Yoga and came to us every
Wednesday for an hour and a half to share her knowledge and expertise. Most
students had not practiced yoga prior to Kathy’s classes but are now enjoying
the benefits of this type of exercise.
As well as taking us through sometimes physically demanding postures and
challenging flow sequences, Kathy consistently reminds us to return to ‘the
breath’ and breathing and how this focus can aid one’s physical and mental
health. Typically a class finishes with several minutes of relaxation which serves
to refresh and restore the body and mind. In this often busy and hectic world
we live in, it is lovely to be able to take some time on a Wednesday afternoon
and enjoy what yoga can offer. The positive reaction from the students endorses
the inclusion of yoga into our sports programme. Kathy will return to Bulli High
School later in the year to offer her classes in Term 4.

Volleyball Knockout Games
Bulli High School has enjoyed hosting Oak Flats, Keira and Corrimal High Schools for the first rounds of Boys and Girls
Volleyball Knockout games for 2018.
Our girls were successful in their first game against Oak Flats HS but unfortunately lost to Corrimal HS in Round 2. They
remained gracious in defeat and enjoyed the opportunity to play different schools and bond as a team during training as well
as during the games.
The boys had a 2-0 win against Keira HS but were tested against Corrimal HS where the match had to go to a third set to
determine a winner. Assisted with wise words and expert coaching from Ms Viravong, Bulli was eventually victorious. Early
in Term 2, Bulli will play a Round 4 game, the opposition of which is yet to be announced.
The enthusiasm of the boys along with their ever-increasing skill level and understanding of the game is evident at training
and games. We look forward to the next stage of the competition.

Wollongong Council Visit
On Tuesday 27th March, representatives from the Wollongong City Council Engagement Team came to Bulli High School to
meet with student representatives from the SRC across Years 8-12, and a group of Year 7 students, regarding how Council
could better engage with the young people of the Illawarra.
Working groups discussed and formulated ideas based on a variety of topics, including how young people can share their
ideas and concerns with Council, how Council can better communicate with and involve the youth of the region in policy and
projects and the types of services and activities that Council could consider in the future. All students were engaged and
contributed and gained a new perspective on Council’s operations and initiatives. Bulli High appreciated the opportunity
presented to us, as the only school in Ward Three and one of only three schools in the Illawarra to receive this invitation.
Congratulations to all involved.

Good News Story
One of the really exciting experiences for the students from the Bulli High Black Diamond Learning Centre is to participate in
courses at TAFE when they progress into Year 11 and 12. This year Joshua Christensen, one of our talented Year 12 students,
is completing a Retail Bakery course where he is learning to bake some of the most delicious cakes and pastries imaginable.
These lemon meringue pies are just a little sample of some of the treats he has been baking each week and taking home for
his family to try. Luckily for the teachers of the Black Diamond, we all get to have a taste of his excellent baking as well, even
if it means we are all getting a little wider as a result. What a great experience for our students, and congratulations to Joshua
who is certainly on the road to success.
