April 2016 had been circled on the calendar of many Canadian Holstein breeders for a couple of years as they anticipated the National Holstein Convention making its return to the west! Alberta invited Holstein enthusiasts to come witness their #justmajestic natural scenery, farms and cattle when the event was held in Calgary & Banff from the 19-23. We were proud to lend our support to the event as the Banff Pinnacle Sponsor.

The week of activities began with welcome receptions Tuesday evening in Calgary and Edmonton, before the tour buses rolled out the next morning. From Rietveld Dairies in the north to Mars Dairy in the east to Deerfield Colony in the south and everywhere in between, guests were amazed by the modern dairies and productive cows found in the wild rose province. The Welcome BBQ and National Sale showcased the new Agrium Events Centre at the Calgary Stampede that evening, along with 102 head of cattle sold by Blondin Craswell Auctions for an average of $5433.

Judge Gerald Coughlin was given the task of lining up 230 Holsteins on Thursday, in what became a banner day for Wendon Holsteins, earning the Premier Exhibitor & Breeder (sponsored by Boviteq West) awards and having bred the Grand Champion Prude (owned by Westcoast) and Reserve Champion Goldwyn Allabuzz. Following a free day, Friday evening gave guests a chance to kick up their heels at the Mount View Barn Dance. The 133rd Annual General Meeting of Holstein Canada was

held Saturday where Val Bisson Goldwyn Maya (granddam of Doorman) was unveiled as the 2015 Cow of the Year. The convention concluded with the Master Breeder Gala on Saturday evening, at which 21 Master Breeders were each awarded the 1000th shield in recognition of their superior accomplishments. Chairman Glenn Hockley thanked his large volunteer committee and passed the flag to York County, Ontario,

the hosts for 2017. As convention attendees arrive home and catch up on some sleep, many will be highlighting April 2020 in their calendars, to join Saskatchewan in welcoming the nation!

The WestGen Board of directors is comprised of ten Western Canadian cattle producers, each elected

by the WestGen membership.

This year, please join us in welcoming three new directors from BC to the WestGen Board!

New Genomax Power

New exciting additions to our Genomax list at proof time is perhaps becoming more exciting than watching the early Genomax bulls graduating to the proven lineup. April proofs, even with a base change to make more moderate the top end numbers for all traits, delivered another wonderful bag of goodies.

First SonsOver the past year two Genomax bulls who still remain on our proof sheet have been exceedingly popular with breeders. Now their first sons join the proof sheet with them!

Stantons EXPANDER (High Octane x Uno) – His dam Enya is a sister to the very popular Genomax bull Pulsar and to Main Event. Add High Octane for more Milk and more Type and you get the appropriately named Expander. He’s among our top Genomax Type offerings at +18. Only Solomon exceeds him at +19. Expander is expected to sire pleasing

production that is enhanced by thrilling overall udder and dairy strength improvement. This bull is destined to make fancy ones. Anyone who appreciates high scoring cows can make good use of Expander, but those who want to make the kind that could parade on the tanbark are particularly advised to go ahead and place your order. His

Immunity+ status is a nice bonus.

Claynook MOVIEINK (Wickham x McCutchen) – his dam is a VG-87-2-YR old with an 88 point F&L and 89 point Rump score. Still, as impressive as that is, what you really need to know is that this is the first Wickham son on offer. Wickham the extremely popular Mogul son whose calves are turning heads everywhere. Movieink will make them as glamourous as you’d need for a Hollywood encounter. An exceptional combination of udder and F&L improvement is what you should expect. And while they might like the lights and the glitter, when the show’s over they won’t mind pulling their weight day to day with the rest of the herd either!

Boldi EAGLE (Ascend x Meridian) – A slightly different pedigree and a huge winner in the DGV sweepstakes. In other words his DNA sort is particularly favourable with a nearly 200 point spread on DGV LPI to his GPA LPI. The result is despite having a pedigree that wouldn’t suggest he should be our best, we have no bulls on offer

currently with a higher LPI. He will be our only Ascend son and likely the only Ascend son in AI. That he is out of one of the very few Meridian daughters who would be a bull mother makes Eagle even more unique. He provides a balanced offering with excellent component yields and percents. In fact he is our highest fat and protein percent bull with over 1,000kg Milk. Combine it with excellent Type and an extreme Calving Ability prediction and this is then a bull that seems to be a must-use sire.

RJR SPIDERMAN (Pure x Uno) – Spiderman is our first Pure (Mogul x Man O Man) son. He’s a Pro$ specialist and LPI specialist too and he’s our highest rated bull for TPI. In fact, he might be our most balanced

bull on offer based on his Canadian numbers. High yields, an excellent balanced Type proof with the benefit of making moderate sized cows, he is predicted to transmit ideal teat length and lower pins. Notably he has a picture perfect health trait profile including good milking speed and calving ease – plus he’s an Immunity+ bull. Why not

transform your herd with some Spiderman super-bovine strength and that spider-sense to keep them out of danger (off cull lists). This is a bull you should use!!

UPPERCUT (Unix x Sudan x Bronco x Satire x Aaron x Merrill x Oscar) – With such an eclectic lineup of sires in his maternal pedigree, it is extremely hard to imagine that the outcome would be a bull with 3263 LPI prediction and a +15 Type score. In fact, Uppercut is sure to be singled out as an outcross pedigree of choice in 2016. He has high component percentages and extreme udder improvement as his key weapons and a no-holes health trait profile to add further appeal. He’s a bull that is an affordable choice to add diversity to your herd’s bloodlines.

Silverridge V ERIC (Lottomax x McCutchen) – His dam is a sister to the extremely popular Genomax sire, Wickham. He’s also our first Lottomax son on offer and a very well balanced offering once again. His +15 for Conformation in Canada makes him very competitive – meanwhile his +3.33 rating for PTAT in the US makes places him among the top group of bulls. He’s another Immunity+ bull and an easy one to use without any real areas of deficit.

Red-R-J-My MEMORIAL (Pulsar x Uno) – Our first Pulsar son, Memorial is a solid Robot-Ready addition who can make cows with excellent foot structure, wider rear teat placing and an excellent combination of Herd Life and Daughter Fertility. He’s affordably priced too – don’t miss out.

First GeneBank HeifersArrive at Boviteq West!

With a dozen members committed to the GeneBank initiative, WestGen has purchased the first pair of heifers on behalf of the group. Both heifers are from well-known and highly respected cow families that have stood the test of time and endure even in the genomic era.

Westcoast Spring Dixie 3377, tracing to the Markwell Raven family and Westcoast Entail Lautalva 3170, tracing to the Comestar Laurie Sheik family are both striking heifers with complete pedigrees and strong genomic numbers to support the foundation female status they are being provided.

Both heifers are now resident at Boviteq West and will begin IVF collections in the coming weeks. It’s not too late to join – give us a call to find out how you can be a part of GeneBank program.

While these additional two bulls are not the first sons from their sire, they are both exceptional new offerings and are easy choices to include in most programs.

Cedarwal CREW (Kingboy x Uno) – Bred right here in Western Canada and tracing to the very popular “Cosmopolitan” cow family, Crew will undoubtedly be a popular addition to our Genomax lineup. He’s an Immunity+ bull delivering a very nice balance of component yields with high Type. Both udder and F&L breakdowns look very good and his solid Calving Ability score should make him safe for use on heifers even at this stage in his career.

Progenesis ORION (Kingboy x Mogul) – Among our top “dual citizen” bulls, offering top-end LPI and TPI improvement. He sires extreme milk

(over 2000Kg), extreme Type with ideal Udders and F&L and he is safe for use on heifers even without actual daughter information. What’s more he improves Milking Speed and is an Immunity+ bull.

Lots of compelling choices. As always, spread your risk by using many if not all of them!

producer presentations from Ben Loewith, ON; Anton Borst, MB and Gert Schrijver, AB. They later gathered for a producer panel which highlighted their progressive views on dairy management.

The much-anticipated tour at the new office satisfied the curiosity of our members as to what WestGen’s new home will look like. Drywall was up and you could really see the space taking shape.

After a delicious buffet dinner, guests traded in their WestGen “Mooney” to play the tables at the Casino with their signature drink, the WestGen Cow-Pirinha. The lime beverage was inspired by the recent trip to Brazil. A fun time was had by all!

Wednesday led a tour group to UBC, Agassiz where presentations on

CheckUp, Uniform Agri and Dairy Track were followed by a barn tour.

Next stops in Chilliwack were the beautiful new GEA robotic rotary dairy at Gracemar Farms followed by a visit to the Westcoast Holsteins show barn.

The 2016 WestGen days will be one for the memory books! We look forward to seeing you all at the 2017 event.Save the date for March 27-29, 2017.

daysThe 2016 WestGen Days event was action packed. The event kicked off with a casual Wine and Cheese night filled with attendees from BC to Ontario, including our local reps.

The AGM day saw great attendance by our members. Financial reports from Controller Vernon Smith and Treasurer Raymond Brink showed that the WestGen Group of Companies had a strong year in 2015 delivering some pleasing results. Our success has not been the result of short term changes, but rather a fundamental shift in our business philosophy over the last few years. In 2016, we will continue to focus our efforts on building a strong future to ensure this company has a bright future owned and directed by you the Western Canadian producers.

Tim Hofstra proudly announced that the WestGen Endowment Fund returned another $110,639 back to the cattle industry

in 2015 totalling $1,592,003 since its inception in 2004. Of that total, over $433,000 has been invested in youth programs.

We were pleased to have 2015 Education Award recipient Maryje Bikker of Barrhead, Alberta join us to be recognized and participate in WestGen Days.

Appreciation of our retiring board members David Janssens, Rudy Russenberger and Raymond Brink gave way to the new at-large

directors elections from the floor. WestGen is happy to welcome our new directors, Tony Van Garderen and Richard Bosma (both of Abbotsford, BC). Previously elected were BC: Henry Gisler (Langley, BC) & Ridley Wikkerink (Cobble Hill, BC) and SK: Art Pruim (Osler, SK).

The afternoon session themed on Building for the Future was exciting. Youth speaker David MacTaggart started the afternoon with a dynamic speech followed by 3

Base ChangesIn the first proof run of the year in Canada, a base change is applied which essentially subtracts the average genetic improvement being made over the past year from the genetic numbers for every animal (both females and males). While an animal’s genetic makeup does not change, the amount of superiority over the population average will continue to decline as the population catches up. The base change for each breed and each trait within those breeds will differ. Here is a summary of the changes for key traits by breed as provided by the Canadian Dairy Network:

What hot spot is on your bucket list? For many, the land down under is a destination they’ve always wanted to visit, though it can be a big trip to plan on your own. So when Jim Conroy & Peter Dickson of Semex Australia extended us another invitation to bring a group of Canadian dairy producers to tour their vast country they didn’t have to twist our arm very hard.

With great reviews and suggested tweaks from our 2016 Brazil trip guests in hand, we’ve begun organizing a vacation opportunity to see this great country’s sights and cows all while travelling with a group that’s sure to become lifelong friends! Mark the middle 2 weeks of January 2017 on your calendar and watch westgen.com/australia for the itinerary to bereleased on July 1st!

YOUNG SIRE UPDATEWith regret, we inform that the longstanding 50-year tradition of “sampling” young sires in Canada is officially coming to an end for the Semex Partners, CIAQ, EastGen and WestGen. For the many producers who participate in WestGen’s Partner program, starting May 1st the Ecoline brand and its suite of

product options will replace the young sire semen currently being used, alongside usage of the best Genomax products as they become released to market.

INTRODUCING THE ECOLINE BRAND!

All farmers have need for an economical solution for a portion of their breeding program and WestGen’s Ecoline brand will now satisfy that need. Ecoline sires can be daughter Proven or Genomax bulls that have moved past their stay on our marketing list but who still offer an excellent value proposition for the investment. In addition, Ecoline can be a Calving Ability - Leading Fertility (CALF) type of solution where genetic indexes take a back seat to maximizing the chances for pregnancy and an easily delivered live calf.

There will be a variety of options provided to ensure all producers feel they have suitable choice for that inexpensive product that is still required irrespective of young sire programs being eliminated.

While it is natural to be nostalgic about the end of a fifty year tradition this outcome was predictable with the arrival of the genomic era. If a sire isn’t sufficiently interesting to receive marketing interest immediately via the Genomax

list, there is very little chance that s a m p l i n g and waiting four years will g e n e r a t e a different result. The

Aerostars, Aerolines and Goldwyns that broke through because of sampling results are no longer there to be found, as almost all of the breed leaders are identified within weeks of birth via the results of a genomic test. The decision to no longer sample bulls allows Semex to focus all of those same resources instead to securing the very best bulls for its owners.

WestGen would like to sincerely thank all Partner herds for their many years of commitment to sire sampling.

If a sire isn’t sufficiently compelling to receive marketing interest immediately via the Genomax list, there is very little chance that “sampling” and waiting four years will generate a different result.

For some producers the primary objective in breeding is to create a pregnant cow so that a future lactation can be ensured. For them the economics of pregnancies takes precedence over genetic calibre of the calves that are a by-product of this process. For these customers we now identify CALF (Calving Ability – Leading Fertility) sires specifically for them.

A high fertility product that results in easily delivered calves are the two basic requirements for the CALF designation. Sires with the Semex Repromax designation or an above average CDN Non-Return Rate score plus above average Calving Ability can qualify for the designation. While CALF bulls can be found within any of our marketing categories it will become a primary focus for the Ecoline product line.

Snowman sons RevisitedIn December we introduced a quintet of Snowman (O Man x BW Marshall x Aaron) sons certain that his Goldwyn and Shottle-free pedigree would provide options for Western Canadian producers. This time we found two more exceptional Snowman sons too compelling to leave off the list, so we removed two others to keep it to five sons.

Snowman is clearly transmitting exceptional F&L improvement with our five sons averaging almost +13 for overall F&L Score and nearly +14 for Heel Depth. What’s more, all five sire lower pins and sire excellent rear teat placement for robotic milking systems – two specific traits our members are very selective on.

Most pleasing, several of the Snowman sons introduced in December have improved impressively on their debut numbers. SMURF absorbed the annual base change and actually saw his LPI increase slightly, moving to #3 for LPI and to the overall breed-leader for Pro$ among daughter proven sires in Canada. More dramatic still, SYMPATICO, who just cracked the top 25 LPI group in December gained several hundred LPI points and with it charged up the list to #6. SMURF combines 2500 kg Milk with +11 Mammary, +12 F&L, +10 Rump scores and an overall Type rating of +13, while SYMPATICO, with 1900 kg Milk offers balanced Type highlighted by a +14 F&L score plus bankable Calving Ability at 110. These are must use bulls for any Canadian herd.

New Snowman SonsWhile Doorman takes the #1 Type position in Canada, nipping at his heels and in sole possession of the #2 Type position is JK Eder-I CONTROL (Snowman x Bolton). At +18 for Conformation based on 161 daughters, he’s the only bull – Proven or Genomax – to sport double digit ratings for Mammary, F&L, Dairy Strength and Rump. Add to that ideal teat placement, teats slightly on the longer side and slightly lower pin setting and you have yourself another must use bull. Meanwhile DPR CARAMINATOR (Snowman x Baxter) provides the same combination of key attributes that producers are looking for (teat placement, teat length, rump angle) in a solid, balanced package.

Snowman is clearly a prolific sire of sons – he does many things consistently well through his collection of sons. Still, among them we have a breed leader for Milk and also a breed leader for Type, while a trio of them compete for best in class for F&L. They are versatile and balanced bulls that will make a positive contribution to your herd’s progress.
