Hello Burbank Parents and Guardians, Stay calm, March is here and spring is near! It is March and the school year is moving so quickly. Although much of the school year has drifted by, our students are still motivated and aiming for success! We have much to celebrate and we love to toot our horns. Great Writing starts at School!

As you may already know, students recently wrote stories that were entered in the dis-trict’s Young Author’s Writing Contest! I had the opportunity to read the entries and I say, I was truly impressed. Burbank School has many creative writers. Yes, I do, I have a favorite story but all of the stories were well-written and captivating. The grade level from Burbank School competed with grade level winners from other district schools.

St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser

Thanks are extended to our Burbank families and friends who have generously donated to the St. Baldrick’s fundraising drive. This year’s drive has been sponsored by Ms. Har-rison and Ms. Fitzgerald. Donations are cur-rently being accepted to advance childhood cancer research.

The district’s official St. Baldrick head-shaving event will be held at Liberty Jr. High on Wednesday, March 16th at 6:00 p.m. Mon-etary donations will also be accepted that evening.

Spring Picture Day

Thursday, March 17th is Spring Picture Day. Information regarding available packet will be sent home with students, students will be permitted to dress casual on that day. Bright smiles are a must!

Spring Fling

Mark your calendars, the Spring Fling is near!

Burbank’s PFC will host the yearly gathering of families and friends on Friday, March 18th. This is a must attend event….music, food, and fun! Tickets are currently being sold. Hope to see you there!

International Game Night

Fun, games, and laughter. Don’t miss our first International Game Night. Students, par-ents, and friends are invited to our Interna-tional Game Night on Thursday, March 24th from 6-7p.m. Students must be accompa-nied by an adult.

Spring Break

Burbank School will be closed on Friday, March 25th through Friday, April 1st for Spring Break. Classes will resume on Mon-day, April 4th. Spring Break offers an excel-lent opportunity for students and their fami-lies to spend time together. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for lots of sunshine and warm weather.

The PARCC is Coming!

Students in grades three through six will complete the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test (PARCC) during the weeks of April 4th and April 11th. The test has replaced the Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT) that has been previously taken in the spring. Our stu-dents will be taking computer-based tests in English Language Arts/Literacy tests (ELA) and Mathematics. The test will measure stu-dents understanding of Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The testing sessions will begin after spring break. A schedule will be created that will allow all students in the same grade level to complete the same test on a given day. It is important that students are present in school on their scheduled testing date. In addition to being present at school, it is imperative that students get a restful night’s sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch.

I am confident that our students will do their very best while completing the test.

We are proud to announce that District 111 will host its third annu-al St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser on March 16, 2016. Over the next few weeks students, staff members and community members will come together to collect donations to help fund lifesaving research into cures for common pediatric cancers.

Every year over 175,000 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer. The treatments for these diseases are never easy, and many children cope with the lingering effects of radiation, chemo-therapy and surgeries for years after their diagnoses. With your help the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will fund research into new cures, with fewer side effects that can not only improve the survival rates for these children, but can also help preserve a normal child-hood for these patients.

Over the past two years, our district has raised over $50,000 for this amazing organization. This year we hope to raise an additional $35,000. We will also ask our stu-dents to stand up and shave their heads to show their support for those suffering from cancer. We will also be collecting ponytail donations for the Children with Hair Loss foundation. March 9, 2016 - PARCC Testing


Currently, the literacy classes are based in the computer lab working on typing skills, practicing for PARCC, and researching for grade level projects. Students in grades 2-6 will complete an internet-based research project either with a small group or individually. They are working hard on several various topics and I’m proud of all of their accomplishments! The topics are as follows:

Grade 2 – Animals: Students are looking at a variety of animals at the San Diego Zoo (which is a fun site to try at home! www.sandiegozookids.org). Grade 3 – Weather: Using www.weatherwizkids.com and www.weatherforkids.org, students are re-searching various types of weather that occurs all over the United States.

Grade 4 – The 50 States: Students are individually researching their chosen state (facts are found at www.netstate.com or www.50states.com).

Grade 5 – The Human Body: Small groups chose one of the human body systems and they are work-ing together to find out fun facts, diseases, and so much more! (www.kidshealth.org)

Grade 6 – Nationalities: Individually, students are researching different aspects of their heritage. This topic was a bit more difficult because I gave them less direction and structure, feeling confident that they would come up with magnificent work—and they did!! I have learned so much about our students and their culture. They are really rocking this project!

The adorably hilarious Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin is my book rec-ommendation this month. It is written for grades K-3 (AR Level: 3.1) and is written in a similar style to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The first line of the book reads, “Hey kid! Did you know that dragons love tacos?” and as you read on, you find out that they love all types of tacos, but not spicy sal-sa. As the story pans out, the boy has a taco party for the dragons and makes one big mistake… In the end, the dragons help him out, but only be-cause they want one thing in return. This book is super cute! Check it out!

Literacy News

The end of the third quarter will be at the end of March. We are amazed at how fast the school year has gone. We will be working on assessing your child this month and will be sharing the results with you. Please practice with your child so they can memorize their phone num-ber, address, and birthday.

In reading, we are working on reading emergent readers flu-ently. New popcorn words will increase to two a week instead of one. Remember to practice words daily. Sentence writing is coming along. The goal is to be writing 3 sentences about a giv-en topic.

Lately, our focus in Math has been on addition and subtrac-tion. We have been adding and subtracting groups in many dif-ferent ways. Our expectation is

that the students will be able to fluently add subtract within ten by the end of the year. Students have been moving nicely through our weekly math fact tests, keep up the hard work! If you should have any questions, please let us know.

First Grade News We are ready for spring!!! First grade is flying by and we have been very busy. We continue to work on improv-ing our reading skills. We have really been focusing on going back into the text to find our answers. Please practice this skill with your child at home. In math we have been working on place value. The 2nd graders have been working hard to finish up the 3rd Quarter strong! Our classes have been learning the values of different coins and counting money in Math. The students really seem to enjoy practicing their skills with fake money! This is also a con-cept that can easily be practiced at home!

In reading, we will be beginning Unit 5 of the Reading Won-ders series. Our dai-ly learning centers are running smoothly and the students re-ally enjoy that part of the day. Spelling and vocabulary words are continuing to increase in difficul-ty, so please practice these words at home. Additionally, please take ad-vantage of our many

reading and math websites that are available to you on the district website!

Third Quarter report cards will go home this month. Please contact your teach-ers with any ques-tions or concerns you may have.

Second Grade News

Third Grade News year students in the entire state will be taking the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for Col-lege and Careers) test. They will be tested in English Language Arts (Reading, Spelling, Gram-mar, and Word Usage) and Math. There will be three units of the ELA test and two units of the Math test. Students’ success is greatly affected on a good night’s sleep, proper nu-trition from break-fast, and limited stress/anxiety. We know our students are brilliant and hardworking and we have confi-

dence in each and every one. It will be critical for your child to be at school each and every day we are testing and on time. We will continue working on Read-ing Comprehension and Fluency, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing during our daily Reading Block. Students are assigned 20 minutes of reading a night. We are Springing through the 6th Grade

We just about to start PARCC testing!!! The stu-dents have done a wonderful job preparing for the test. They have been working on focusing, organization, prob-lem solving, and trying their best while taking the test.

Students are deeply involved in our new unit in social stud-ies, Greece. They are map-ping, identifying geographical features and learning all about how ancient city-states ran. Students will continue to read and learn about the my-thology of Greece and their gods and goddesses.

Students are working hard in their Environments Science book; learning all about ani-mals, their habitats and differ-ent niches. Students have done a wonderful job working in small groups on fun inter-active projects.

Please remind your students to continue to read at least 20 minutes a night and to contin-

ue to work on their mathe-matical concepts at home.

It seems as if Mother Nature is starting to loosen her grip on winter and spring is right around the corner. Speaking of spring, our 16th Annual Spring Fling Family Dance is approaching quickly. The dance will take place on Friday, March 18th from 6pm-9pm. We will have dancing, a dj, air brush tattoos, food, large prize raffles and our ever famous basket raffles. Flyers will be coming home soon with more information. Be sure to keep an eye out for our basket raffle donation requests and the dance ticket order forms. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering for this event. We especially need help with set up and take down.
