The mystery/thriller Snapshot by Lis Wiehl is an intriguing blend of fact and fiction. The premise is based on an actual photograph of the author taken nearly fifty years ago at a civil rights rally in Texas. Snapped by Wiehl’s FBI agent father, the photo shows two 4-year-old girls, one blonde, one African-American.

When Wiehl’s father subse-quently gave her the photo, she knew there hinged a story. Wiehl said she was inspired to create a fictional tale about the murder of an up-and-coming civil rights leader, a man who was wrongly convicted of the murder, an FBI agent who knows the man is innocent and the two little girls from the snapshots – now grown – who may have witnessed the murder.

Snapshot introduces the reader to Lisa Waldren, a federal prosecutor in Boston. She has no memory of the Civil Rights Movement and the turbulent 1960s. So it’s with conflicting emotions that she agrees to help her estranged father, a retired FBI agent, locate evidence that could exonerate the death row inmate falsely accused of civil rights activist Benjamin Gray’s murder in 1965. Time is running out and Lisa’s father wants to right an old wrong.

Tracking down new leads from the old files, the Wal-drens are able to locate the other little girl from the photo. As they get closer to discovering who really killed Benjamin Gray, someone will do anything to keep that from happening.

Lis Wiehl’s Snapshot is a compelling read, one you may be tempted to finish in a single sitting. It’s

available at Central Library on the new Mystery shelf.
