The Burnaby Teachers’ Association (BTA) could be willing to look into the idea of a two-week spring break according to a motion on the agenda of its general meeting on Jan. 22.

The motion calls on the BTA to lobby the Burnaby school board to “co-sponsor an outside report with submissions from all stakeholders” on the pros and cons of a two-week break which, it says, saves other Lower Mainland school districts $200,000 to $500,000 each school year.

BTA vice-president Patrick Parkes said the motion did not come from the BTA executive but rather from members who are interested in the topic. He stressed that the BTA has not taken a position on the issue.

But “it’s a major topic of discussion among some members,” he said.

In the Lower Mainland only Burnaby and New Westminster still have only a one-week spring break. The two-week school closures were implemented in other districts in the last few years as a cost-cutting measure.

Mountain students produce ecstasy cautionary taleWanda [email protected]

Students at a Burnaby high school were asked following a theatre performance recently how many of them had tried the drug ecstasy.

One brave soul put up their hand.“Then they asked, ‘Who knows

where they can get it?’ and everyone put their hand up,” recalled Grade 11 Burnaby Mountain student Isaac

Caverzan, 16, one of the actors that day.

If the Mountain drama students needed any reminder of why they created and produced their short play, Russian Roulette, about the dangers of ecstasy use, that was it.

“It’s $5 a pill,” Caverzan said. “Anyone can get their hands on it.”

And it’s the often fatal effects of the drug that prompted Burnaby RCMP to put out a call for proposals on how to get that message out to students. Mountain drama teacher Felicity Rudolph

applied and the class was awarded a grant to create the show, written and produced by about 28 students from the school’s theatre production and media studies classes.

The students will put on a free performance on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m. at Michael J. Fox Theatre, aimed at parents and any students aged 12 and older.

In the last six years, 99 youth in B.C. have died after taking ecstasy, an average of 16 a year, Rudolph said. “Those are the ones that are dying, they’re not just messed up.”

The show is a docudrama which includes the story of Cheryl McCormack, an Abbotsford teen who died in 2011 after taking the drug, only three weeks after the ecstasy-related death of Tyler Miller, a 20-year-old from the same city.

The Mountain students’ research taught them that ecstasy works by raising serotonin levels in the brain, which greatly improves mood and appetite and increases energy levels.

In the world of Harley Davidson customization, black is the new chrome.

Influenced by TV shows like Sons of Anarchy, about an outlaw motorcycle gang with a sense of style, discerning Hog riders are getting the chromed engine blocks on their bikes blacked out just like the Dyna Super Glide Sports ridden on the cable series.

That’s money in the bank for Rob Thiessen and his partner Keith Yip, who opened their own customization shop, Lucky 51, in a north Burnaby warehouse two years ago.

For Thiessen, the chance to tinker and “sup” up the big bikes is the ultimate expression of his love for the American classic. He’s owned 10 of them through the years since he graduated from the dirt bike he favoured as a kid.

“I love the way it’s made, the way it sounds,” says Thiessen. “A lot of other bikes have lots of plastic parts but the Harley is still American steel.”

That steel rolled him through a 20-year music career, playing bass and singing vocals for the metal/punk band Noise Therapy that toured with hard core acts like Motley Crue and Marilyn Manson.

When the novelty of the rock-and-roll road wore off, Thiessen jumped into Harleys with both boots as a performance expert and design consultant at

renowned Vancouver dealer Trev Deeley for seven years before striking out on his own.

While the bikes still revel in their outlaw image, they’ve become increasingly popular with Baby Boomers and Gen Xers looking to stay in touch with their wild side as they wrestle with mortgage payments and getting the kids to soccer practice on Saturday mornings.

“It takes your mind off everything,” says Thiessen of the Harley experience. “You don’t think of anything else but being on the road.”

In their cramped but immaculate workshop, Thiessen and Yip have up to a dozen bikes in various states of disassembly as they’re fitted with everything from custom painted fenders, cowlings and saddlebags to unique

lighting arrays and stereo systems to special wheels and exhaust assemblies.

“You can individualize a motorcycle more than a car,” says Thiessen. “There’s really no end to what you can do with a Harley.”

And no limit on what it can cost. A customization can run anywhere from $500 to $50,000 and can take a few hours to more than 50 to complete.

Some of the bikes in

the shop are spec jobs. Thiessen flexes his creative muscles while Yip works his technical prowess to cobble creations they’ll present at show and shines to show what they can do and hopefully sell. Two such bikes are currently up on the work stands getting the final touches affixed to them in time for the Vancouver Bike Show, which runs Jan. 17-20 at the Abbotsford TRADEX.

“We get to do exactly what we want,” says Thiessen. “It gives us a chance to try new things.”

School district exploring issue

Parkes said he doesn’t personally have strong feelings about the issue either way and could see both the positives and negatives.

“I think it’s a healthy and necessary part of being a human being to have some down time where you can just think about things and engage your creativity.”

It can also give teachers some time to catch up to marking or lesson planning, since B.C. teachers get half the amount of paid planning time than their counterparts in Ontario, he said.

On the other hand, a longer spring break could be a hardship for some families who can’t afford the additional childcare. And the BTA would want to make sure teachers on call don’t see their wages cut as a result.

Burnaby school board chair Baljinder Narang said up until now, the district hasn’t followed others in implementing the longer break simply because “there didn’t seem to be any kind of push for it.”

The school district is already actively looking into both sides of the issue. Any changes would be somewhat easier to make now that the Education Ministry is allowing individual districts to set their own calendars.

When users come off it, their serotonin crashes and it can take from days to years to recover to proper levels of the brain chemical.

Grade 10 Mountain drama student Allegra Wright, 15, noted that many think people only die because of toxins used as fillers by unscrupulous ecstasy producers. But the fact is, “even pure ecstasy can kill you,” she said. The drug affects people in different ways.

That’s why the students named the show Russian Roulette.

The goal was to create a

show for students that raises awareness of the issue without using scare tactics, Wright said.

Caverzan said, “We do address death as a possibility. One of the lines is, ‘What are the chances it’s going to happen to you?’”

So far the students have performed the show to schoolmates at Mountain and toured it to Burnaby North, Alpha and Central secondaries. The hope is to bring it to all Burnaby’s high schools.

The show is generally followed by a question-and-answer session with a panel that includes local youth workers

and Burnaby RCMP officers. The students have been pleased with the response so far.

Sometimes it’s met with silence, Caverzan said, noting he’s spoken to friends who said “they didn’t want to say anything because they were scared.” Another time, Wright was pleased to hear students outside in the hallway quoting lines from the show to each other.

The performance at Alpha was attended by the mother and sister of Cheryl McCormack.

“They were in tears, Cheryl’s mom was speechless,” recalled Caverzan. “They were blown

away by it.”Rudolph said she’s

received numerous positive emails about the show. “For us we could feel it. You can feel when you have the audience.”

In doing the project, she said her students are now well versed in the dangers of ecstasy.

“They’re not going to sit back and let somebody do that. They’re going to speak up.”

• Russian Roulette: What are the Chances? is at Michael J. Fox Theatre, 7373 MacPherson Ave., Burnaby, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m. and will be followed by a question period. Content is mature and for ages 12 and up. The performance is free and seats are first come, first seated. RSVP to [email protected] with subject line Russian Roulette.

‘They were blown away by it’

Faced 27 charges, convicted on 15 countsWanda [email protected]

A Burnaby man has been convicted of 15 counts in a complicated case involving the income tax returns of 21 people.

Mark Andrew Rosie had been charged with 20 counts of making

or participating in false income tax refund claims, three counts of evading or attempting to evade taxes owed by other people and four counts of possession of stolen property.

According to the recent B.C. Supreme Court judgment by Justice Deborah Kloegman, prosecutors claimed that Rosie “created and directed a multi-year, overarching

scheme to defraud the government and others, by obtaining false income tax refunds, evading taxes, and stealing bona fide tax refund cheques.”

While the judgment did not include the value of all the fraudulently-obtained tax refunds, those mentioned total about $84,000.

Several of the counts involved the use of the same names, addresses and other details.

Evidence was shown that some of the false returns were telefiled from Lower Mainland hotels, and the addresses on the returns—including ones in Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver and Coquitlam—were often those of homes where Rosie was living at the

time, addresses he used on his business card or ones otherwise associated to him.

Several of the returns claimed spousal deductions listing the same name as spouse, a former crack addict who had allowed “a guy named ‘Mark’” to prepare some of her tax returns in the past.

And a number claimed business losses for recycling companies which did not exist.

Adas International appears as the company that prepared nine of the returns in question, and while the judge found one of the principals, Lenka Simons, “less than candid” about her involvement and claims not to recognize the accused or any of the clients he brought her, the judge noted only Rosie was

charged.Rosie’s defence lawyers

argued the evidence was weak, mostly due to “the lack of credibility of unsavoury witnesses.”

Many of the people for whom Rosie was convicted of submitting falsified tax returns were drug addicts.

In one case, a 2004 tax return was filed in the name of Mark Bennett claiming a spousal deduction, generating a refund of almost $10,300.

Bennett testified he had never been married and never received the refund cheque. He said he met Rosie through a friend who told him that if he did Bennett’s taxes, he could get more money and would share it with him.

Celina Dalrymple doesn’t have a ticket to either of this weekend’s Lady Gaga concerts at Rogers Arena. But she does have a seat.

For most of the past year Dalrymple, a Burnaby furniture designer, has been on a quest to give a specially crafted chair to the flamboyant musician. With no contacts in the music industry, she’s worked the social media, followed leads, sent letters and emails all in the hope of finally connecting with someone who could connect her with Lady Gaga or her people.

Some, like photos and video she sent to the Ellen Degeneres show, never bore fruit. Others, like the email that somehow found its way to someone who said they were a friend of Lady Gaga’s mom, showed promise. One even led to a possible future collaboration with another furniture designer in New York.

She’s talked to event producers, set and clothes designers, musicians, DJs and radio stations.

But Dalrymple has yet to hook up with someone who has a direct line to Lady Gaga. And with her Born This Way Ball tour kicking off in

Vancouver Friday and Saturday, time is running out.

“I’ve got so many people rooting for me,” says Dalrymple. “Now I can’t let everybody down.”

So determined is Dalrymple to

get her bejeweled green and black velvet chair to Lady Gaga that even without a confirmed rendezvous she and about a dozen other “monsters,” as the singer’s fans are known, will place it on a dolly and roll it down to Rogers Arena to pose for photos. She did that with an antique sofa she’d upholstered with a Union Jack flag for Paul McCartney’s concert at BC Place in November, much to the delight of his fans.

“It was a lot of fun,” says Dalrymple.

“Once the concert started we just sat on it outside and listened to the music.”

Even if her quest comes up short and Dalrymple has to roll Lady Gaga’s chair back to her south Burnaby studio, she says she’s heartened by messages she’s received from others who say they’ve been inspired to reach for their dreams. Which is very much a part of her musical hero’s message.

“She’s just a creative mecca right now, she inspires,” says Dalrymple of Lady Gaga. “She urges us to be

creative and reach for the stars.”• To get the latest on Dalrymple’s

project to get her chair to Lady Gaga, go to her Facebook page www.facebook.com/projectgethischairtoladygaga

Trying to get a chair to Gaga

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERCelina Dalrymple is hoping the chair she designed and built for Lady Gaga will finally find a home with the flamboyant singer this weekend when her Born This Way Ball tour kicks off in Vancouver.

“Mr. Bennett didn’t ask any questions, just gave the accused his SIN and date of birth,” Kloegman said.

“Mr. Bennett started to approach drug users and offer them drugs in exchange for personal information which he would then turn over to the accused in order to file tax returns. This went on for a couple of months until the accused told Mr. Bennett that Mr. Bennett’s refund cheque had been ‘ripped off’ from the accused.”

In another case, tax returns for Lorraine Kehler, who has known Rosie since he was a teenager, claimed business losses from Rosie’s Recycling, which she testified was the name of the accused’s business.

“The purport of her evidence was to the effect that she gave money to the accused from time to time, and the accused had business losses which he allowed her to claim on her T1 and receive a refund as payment of his debt.”

Rosie’s own 2004 tax return was also found to be falsified. In it, he claimed almost $69,000 in income when he only received about $9,200 from social assistance that year. Often refund cheques were deposited into other people’s accounts from which cheques were written. Kloegman noted she disagreed with a defence argument that one particular account where refund cheques were deposited could not be proven to belong to Rosie.

“Without some evidence to the contrary, it would be speculation to doubt that HSBC account ... bearing the accused’s name, and into which the accused was identified on video surveillance photographs as having made other deposits, was in the care and control of anyone other than the accused.”

In the end, Rosie was convicted of 11 counts of making false tax refund claims, three counts of tax evasion, two counts of possession of stolen property.

Rosie convicted on 11 counts of false claims⫸ continued from PAGE A4

So I wrote this column last month.

About homelessness, I guess.Well really, it was about

Burnaby, and the fact there is nowhere in this city for a homeless person to go and have a bed at night. Except during the few freezing nights a year, that is, when a church opens its doors and the Lookout Emergency Society pitches in.

My column questioned Mayor Derek Corrigan’s steadfast policy that a permanent shelter in Burnaby must be bought and supported by the province or Ottawa. I said maybe it’s time that Burnaby dropped this line and rather, fell into line with most cities (large and small) in the region and put up a piece of land for a shelter.

A one-time pittance, relatively speaking, perhaps a couple of million dollars, for a city with a reserve fund in the $600-million ballpark. Or put up a piece of land from the city’s massive land bank. Meantime, the province would cover operating costs. And as we know, “operating” is

another word for “forever.”It’s not like the province

wouldn’t be pitching in.So like I said, I put this out

there. The city needs a permanent shelter. Not in a single-family neighbourhood, of course. Somewhere close to transit. Vancouver has dozens, New West has a few, even Maple Ridge, Langley and the TriCities have them.

I even gave Corrigan a fair shake, repeating his long-standing argument that housing is not a city’s job… Senior governments need to step up… it’s a slippery slope—Burnaby must take a stand for fiscal responsibility.

Etcetera. So if you can imagine it, my

column is written, it goes in

our paper, gets dropped off at 46,000 homes or so. It goes on the Internet, and I go on to the usual social media to make sure all the folks out there get to read it. I ask prompting questions. You know: “Hey Burnaby! There is no shelter in this city! Does this sit right with you?!” Or: “Is it OK that homeless people in this city have to shape up or ship out?”

I really pushed it, you know? And what I heard in response

was this:…..That’s text language for S.B.A.

Sweet bugger all. Not a peep, not a word. Not a letter to the editor, not a phone call, and only a couple of re-tweets on Twitter.

And one of those re-tweets was by the editor of the Georgia Straight, and everyone knows that left-wing rag is full of bleeding hearts anyway.

But isn’t Corrigan a lefty? (Oh let’s not go down that tiresome left-wing/right-wing, trade union/capitalist mumbo jumbo.)

Suffice to say the mayor is NDP. And the NDP controls most of the politics in this city.

And this isn’t a column with aims to slam Corrigan as a mayor, because it seems he does a good job.

And I don’t aim to slam NDP rule at City Hall, because again, it’s been hard to find much to complain about.

But what I’d like to do is highlight three things.

One, Corrigan is wrong in continued stubborn insistence upon failing to kick in some land for a permanent shelter.

Two, I’m surprised he hasn’t responded to my column with a Letter to the Editor.

And Three, I’m also ticked that nobody—not one single person, not even the folks who get worked up about pipes, garbage pickup or even etiquette—commented on what I see as a serious failure on this city’s part to do the right thing.

At very least, this is an issue we need to debate.

Chris Bryan is editor of the NewsLeader.

Silence on homelessness deafening

All levels of government have their hands in your pockets a little more deeply than in 2012.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation sent out a press release last week outlining just how much additional pocket-picking is coming our way in 2013.

The most substantial, and perhaps the most unfair, is the boost in Medical Services Plan premiums. These premiums will go up by $60 per family this year, and have now risen 24 per cent ($300 per family) in three years – far more than the rate of inflation.

This boost in MSP fees was first brought in by the provincial government to help deal with its deficit, and it has since discovered that it’s a tax boost that causes minimal political trouble.

The federal government doesn’t get off scot-free. As of Jan. 1, premiums for Employment Insurance are rising, and so are contributions to the Canada Pension Plan. While contributors will get their CPP contributions back eventually if they retire and collect CPP, the same cannot be said for EI. A small portion of the population actually collects it, but all working people and employers pay dearly.

Burnaby is seeking a 2.9 per cent increase in property taxes this year. New Westminster’s taxes are set to rise by almost two per cent.

TransLink is also taking more from people who actually use the transit system, as fares rose on Jan. 1.

The province is facing a massive deficit and claims it will bring in a balanced budget, so that means  all kinds of potential tax increases. And in the meantime, BC Hydro, controlled by the province, is raising rates by almost four per cent on April 1.

One thing is certain – governments have an  insatiable appetite for our money. While much of the money they take goes to useful services, there is plenty of room for better management and for minimal tax increases.

COMMENT

Re: Enough with guns (Editorial, NewsLeader, Jan. 4)

You say, “More unsound is the suggestion by some that it would be a good idea to arm school administrators and teachers.”

Yet you offer nothing but some politicians’ band-aid solution: a ban on new assault weapons? Those “assault weapons” that the politicians speak of aren’t the ones that have been doing the damage in these school shootings. And the guns—all kinds—are out there now! Millions of them!

As far as the U.S. “firearms-related homicide rate,” their total homicide rate isn’t as bad as many other countries, simply because there are much worse ways to kill someone.

Further, according to DisasterCentre.com the U.S. homicide rate has steadily dropped from 9.8 to 4.7 per hundred thousand in the last two decades, ever since “conceal and carry” became the norm.

And your editorial totally overlooked the number of people who save themselves from others with firearms.

“Let the police serve and protect,” you say? Well they certainly haven’t done that now, have they?

And they are usually only able to do so many, many minutes after the fact. The only way to restrict the ability of these killers of schoolchildren is resistance. Why worry about what a “police state” looks like when the real worry is the creeps who look for defenceless groups of little ones?

If the cops can’t do it we must allow school administrators to do so—provided they are trained.

There are lifeguards at swimming pools, aren’t there?

COUNCIL NEEDS ECONOMICS 101

Burnaby city council needs to take a course in basic economics. Continuously increasing taxes is not good management.

Economics involves the allocation of scarce resources; in this case tax revenue.

Their job is to decide which matters are a priority and allocate funds accordingly not

to just keep on increasing taxes so that every department gets everything it wants.

When I was on council I voted against the BCA budget each year because in my opinion the proposed tax increase was too high. As a result of the compounding continuous tax increases in order to restore a balance there should be no tax increases for at least a three-year period.

I am also not impressed with council’s decision to sneak in a further tax increase by imposing a garbage collection fee.

Garth EvansBurnaby

INJUSTICE CONTINUESWe limit First Nations people

to idleness, and force them into dependency by refusing them the use of their lands and resources. We limit their traditional economies and prevent them from developing contemporary economies.

We never paid for the lands and resources we’ve taken, as required by British colonial law. Our Constitution, international law, and the Great Law of Respect and Consent held by indigenous peoples all affirm aboriginal title and rights. We have extracted untold fortunes—still do—while illegally forcing sovereign nations into powerlessness and deadly poverty.

Young people suffer the choice of leaving their communities for unemployment and racism in the cities, or struggling with unemployment at home, though their territories hold a wealth of resources the world wants. At the same time they suffer the multi-generational ravages of the genocide we have committed since our arrival—and still commit today.

To avoid responsibility for these crimes we blame the First Nations people themselves. What choice remains, besides assimilation (extinguishing their own culture), suicide—or action?

This ongoing crisis damages us all. We need to work with First Nations to end our governments’ unlawful conduct and to remedy 400 years of injustice.

TAX-FREE FUNDS SHOULD NOT SUPPORT POLITICS

Just in case you think that unions, such as CUPW, should be entitled to have tax free slush funds to support their political leanings of choice, I would like you to know that I do not agree! In the strongest possible terms.

The matter came to light when I heard Brian Lilly of Sun News report how the postal union paid for five of its representatives (executives) to attend an anti-Semitic gathering in Brazil.

It was called ‘Free Palestine,’ but their purpose was, apparently, to free Palestinian prisoners, such as Ahmad Sa’adat, from Israeli prisons.

And, of course, bash the ‘occupier,’ Israel. (It would be easier to swallow if anybody called South Vietnam ‘occupied’ as well...)

But, I can honestly say that I would be just as opposed if a union sent people on our dime, or tax-exempt, to the Vatican for an audience with the Pope.

However, the whole concept is absurd!

Do CUPW members agree with what their brass are doing?

This is not what a union is for. If you want to make a political statement, join the party of your choice!

And, put your own money where your mouth is!

Hopefully your readers will support me when I ask the Harper government to put a stop to such non-union activities.

Even some Liberals seem to agree.

But, Mr. Mulcair can do no better than ‘no-comment?’

Clan climb NCAA ranks

The SFU women’s basketball team has climbed to No. 7 in the NCAA Division II Top 25 coaches poll, an improvement of two spots from their previous ranking.

The Clan improved their standing with a pair of wins up north last week. They defeated the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks 71-56 Thursday

and the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves 75-51 Saturday, a

game in which New Westminster’s Kia van

Laare scored six points.SFU will be in Bellingham on

Saturday to take on the Western Washington Vikings, who went from 20th to 11th in the poll. Both have 4-0 records in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Simon Fraser is 11-1 overall.

The men’s hoop squad fell to 0-3 in the GNAC and 5-6 overall after dropping an 86-69 decision to the seventh-ranked Seattle Pacific Falcons in the Washington city on Saturday. Two nights earlier, the hometown University of Montana-Billings Yellowjackets downed the Clan 92-74.

SFU was to play host to the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders on Thursday. The Central Washington Wildcats will be at West Gym to play the Clan on Saturday starting at 7 p.m.

Goals by Burnaby’s Dominec Masellis and New Westminster’s Brandon Del Grosso powered the Vancouver Northwest Giants past the Greater Vancouver Canadians 4-2 at the Richmond Olympic Oval last Sunday.

The previous day, the Giants downed the T-Birds 7-3 in a B.C. Major Midget Hockey League game played at the Burnaby Winter Club with Colton Kerfoot racking up two goals and three assists. Jackson Cressey contributed a pair of goals and an assist with Cole Todd Gavin Gould and Eric Margo also scoring for the Giants. In addition to Del Grosso, Kerfoot, Major Kaila and Jarid Lukosevicius got Northwest goals.

The wins give the Giants a 22-2-2 record and kept them in first place, two points ahead of the Okanagan Rockets. Vancouver will play the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in Chilliwack on Saturday and at BWC at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

A spike in flu cases to abnormally high levels in late December has public health officials watchful in case the illness spreads even faster now that kids are back in school.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control said the province is seeing the highest levels of suspected influenza activity in a decade.

The main flu virus circulating this year is H3N2, which is one of the three varieties covered by this year’s flu vaccine.

The reopening of schools may mean even more potential for the virus to spread between students and then to homes.

“It is a potential concern that children can facilitate the spread, they can amplify the spread,” epidemiologist Dr. Danuta Skowronski said.

Kids are more susceptible to flu because they have less lifetime exposure to the various viruses than adults, she said.

They also have richer social networks and they’re confined together in schools, making transmission more likely.

The H3N2 virus generally tends to be “more severe” than other types, Skowronski said, but added it’s too early to say if this year’s flu cases are tending to be worse than normal.

The virus has been in circulation in the human population since 1968 but constantly mutates to defeat the immunity of its hosts.

There have also been several flu outbreaks at long-term care homes so far this season.

Skowronski said it’s not too late to get the flu shot and strongly urged the elderly and those with chronic conditions or compromised immune systems to get it soon.

She also recommends vulnerable groups get early treatment with antiviral medication within 48 hours of symptoms to reduce the risk of a dangerous flu bout.

Skowronski said she’s not concerned about a reported shortage of Tamiflu antiviral medication, adding B.C. has enough stockpiled for high-risk patients.

The flu season typically runs from November through April and Skowronski said a late-winter wave of flu cases is possible this year from a different flu virus.

Health officials are also grappling with a new strain of norovirus, which changes its form every few years, resulting in more cases than usual.

“Many people don’t have immunity to this new strain,” said Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma. “This is a very unpleasant virus but it usually passes within 24 to 48 hours.”

The “very contagious” gastrointestinal infection causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Officials have battled norovirus outbreaks already at Royal Columbian, Eagle Ridge and Vancouver General hospitals, prompting some ward closures.

Juma said ward closures due to norovirus are very normal each winter.

Anyone who gets the flu or norovirus is urged to stay home, get rest and drink plenty of liquids.

Aggressive hand-washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of either illness and norovirus-contaminated surfaces should be cleaned swiftly with hot, soapy water and then disinfected with a household disinfectant.

Besides taking care to cover coughs and sneezes, officials recommend regular cleaning of frequently touched objects, such as doorknobs and remote controls.

Flu, norovirus surge in B.C.

VICTORIA – The B.C. government is rolling out its new high-tech medical services cards starting Feb. 15, in an effort to phase out millions of CareCards in the hands of non-residents.

The new cards will be combined with the B.C. driver’s licence, with a similar

“BC Services Card” available to those who don’t drive. Residents will be required to re-enrol to renew the card every five years, whether they drive or not.

Qualified residents can enrol in the Medical Services Plan at any provincial office that issues driver’s licences. There is no fee for the health services card only. The current $75 fee for a five-year driver’s licence renewal will apply to the new combined cards, discounted to $17 for seniors.

There is no requirement to get the new card until your

driver’s licence needs to be renewed. The government’s plan is to change over all eligible B.C. residents between the ages of 19 and 74 to the new cards over the next five years.

To be eligible for MSP coverage, you must be a citizen or approved permanent resident of Canada, living in B.C. at least six months of the year. Dependents must also be residents to be eligible for coverage.

The health ministry announced the new card program in May 2011,

after a review showed there were up to 9.1 million B.C. CareCards in circulation. The total population of B.C. is 4.5 million.

Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said the new card is designed to comply with B.C.’s information and privacy law, which restricts how personal data can be used and shared.

That means ICBC and police have no access to medical files, and hospitals and medical offices have no access to driving records.
