Vandal Innovation and Enterprise Words (VIEW) is a campus wide, multidisciplinary edu-cation program at the University of Idaho. The mission of the VIEW Entrepreneurship Pro-gram is to stimulate entrepreneurial spirit throughout the University of Idaho and beyond.

Dr. Mike McColloughVIEW Director

Welcome to the 2013 VIEW Business Plan Competition. This is the eighth year of the competition and we are pleased to have 20 outstanding teams competing for up to $20,000 this year. The students on these teams represent colleges from across campus. The 2013 VIEW Business Plan Competition has three tracks: v Innovative Ventures transform an idea into a business venture and get a new prod-uct, technology, process, or service to the marketplace. v Small Business plans typically do not to involve intellectual property but focus more on traditional startup ventures such as new or expanded retail or service operations. v Small Business and Social Entrepreneurship plans must address a social cause or effort to better the world and society. The business can be set up as a nonprofit organi-zation or it can be set up as a profit-oriented business. As you review this program you will notice many outstanding judges who are reviewers and evaluators of the business plans. The experience of these profession-als is what makes this competition. My sincere thanks to these judges for taking the time to be involved with this business plan competition. Without the judges and the real world experience they bring to the competition this would simply be another classroom exercise. However, our judges make this competition real world. How real? Many past teams have launched a business idea creating jobs, building our economy, and enhancing our tax base. Many of the teams you see today will also launch, taking their dreams, and the mandate of VIEW “out there!” Our thanks also goes out to the many faculty and staff who are serving as mentors to our student teams. It’s also important I thank the many students competing today. We at VIEW look forward to helping you launch not just your businesses, but also reach your entrepre-neurial goals.

I hope you enjoy this year’s competition and sincerely thank all of our private donors who have made this event possible. With their support the students you see today can, and will realize their dreams and change the world.

Mentors: Nigel Davey, Instructor, College of Business and Economics Joe Harris, Director, Entrepreneurial Studies, WSU

The internet and apps have changed the way we travel. They act as guides, help navigate, reduce travel expenses and much more. When integrated, this toolset becomes just as essential to the road trip as a spare tire. Today’s travel tools are good at getting directions from A to B, but previous to DrifTrip, you might have never known that land-marks like Mount Rushmore were only 20 minutes out of the way. DrifTrip equips road trippers with the ability to search for events, land-marks and attractions near any route or in any town along the way.

There are currently 19 companies in the minimalist shoe market. The market has grown from a $540,000 market to a $59 million market in only six years. Bearfoot Shoes combines many elements of exist-ing shoes such as zero drop from heal to toe, open toe box, minimal unnecessary padding and lace design, but combines elements such as increased flexibility of the sole and new innovative lace design. Creating protective sports equipment such as helmets, under helmet hats, and associated apparel, Big Head Hats hopes to capitalize on a $738 million industry and end traumatic brain injuries. On average, 1.7 mil-lion people fall victim to traumatic brain injuries annually. Of those, two out of three victims do not survive, and the remaining third spend an average of 10 years in rehabilitation. Using an in-house design team and outsourced contract manufacturing Big Head Hats hopes to gain a licens-ing agreement with NASA’s space technology “Outlast” to create innova-tive “helmet hats.” This product will manage heat while controlling the production of moisture. It will be made of outlast material, woven into a hat form which regulates body temperature under helmets. Our hope is to establish attractive apparel that coordinates with helmet usage in order to increase the use of helmets and stop the “silent epidemic.”

A simple and effective method of organic fish emulsion can transform the unwanted and harmful biomass into a premium fertilizer product. The mulch-ing and fermenting operations necessary for emulsion will occur at a location in Boise. Our primary target market is organic farmers, many of whom currently pay premium prices for fertilizers.

There are millions of athletes across the U.S. from casual soccer play-ers to hardcore triathlon runners. Yet with these millions of athletes there is no dedicated social media aimed at sports. We have deter-mined an athlete as anyone who is active. The website will stand upon three pillars (1) an athletic profile, (2) a new way to organize sport meet ups between friends, (3) an aggregator for paid sport events. The website will be free to all users, with a large foundation of users revenue will be easier to attain. Revenue will come from adver-tisement and percentages taken from aggregating.
