& how to Buy right.

I’ll leave you with a few simple recommendations:

spot checks by reviewing statements, paperwork and balances and

demand daily & weekly financial reports.

success of your business depends on it.

RECOMMENDATIONS

19. Find a "Business Mentor" a veteran entrepreneur whom has built their business

from scratch & operated it for over 15 years, that has the time & interest in

supporting a business start-up.

20. Start studying the life stories of the Entrepreneurial Greats; be inspired, take

notes, learn from their challenges, successes & failures (visit library, you tube video

archives).

21. If establishing a Partnership clarify that both parties share the same vision,

commitment and values to make the business a success in terms of time, labour

and financing. And most importantly from the outset establish clearly your

individual & defined roles, functions and responsibilities.

22. From the outset decide what is most important; the need & speed to start

trading by raising funds yourself or put up with delays to secure public funding or

grants. If you are dealing with organisations with independent consultants many

are oblivious to your need for momentum & getting your business up & running &

turning a profit a.s.a.p.(most paid by the hour not by results). From my experience I

have as yet to meet a consultant that has been a genuine entrepreneur & has

started their own business from scratch. (see tip No.19)

23. If you haven’t started your business yet complete our ‘Pre start-up Analysis’

24. If you have no family, friends or associates in business start collecting your

private library of articles, books and advice from Entrepreneurs.

PARENTS, DADS & MUMPRENEURS

Before you proceed please review the following suggestions:

For most "Parents, Dads or Mumpreneurs" part of your motivation for setting up a

business in the first place is to benefit "your children" and improve your work life

balance and long term career & financial prospects.

The one taboo subject that most enterprise organisations don't understand, or

want to discuss or address are ‘Parenting, Maternity & Paternity issues’ and the

real challenges of starting a business with a young family.

The questions you are probably asking yourself are;

"Can I really build a business with a young family?”

“Will self employment allow me more freedom?”

“Can I be a better Parent, Mum or Dad by being self employed?”

”How will I be able to run; a business PLUS a house, chores, the school run,

home work plus the inevitable emergency call from the school or nursery?”.

Here I will briefly discuss the burning issues for "Parents" starting their own business.

And tips based on my own life experience of creating a business that can be

flexible around your top priority "your children". (I’ve been there with a 1mth old

baby, a 2 year old & 4 year old during one of my most profitable years in

business).

Let me say to you now YES, self employment is an alternative solution to

employment if you are prepared to be creative, organized and flexible.

And you can gain the joy of:

• Attending every Nativity, Play & Birthday Party

• Having 3 weeks uninterrupted vacation

• Be at their bedside when they are sick

• In my case WITHOUT needing paid childcare

Designovator Formula 2009©

Your secret weapons are:

1. The Design of your business model (‘Secret of Designovator Formula”)and how

it is engineered to function around your lifestyle and first priority your children.

2. Time management skills.

3. The Support of your; Husband, Wife, Partner, Grandparents, family, friends, other

working mums, dads or parents.

4. Creativity, creativity, creativity!

TOP 12 TIPS

1. Improve your time management skills;

• From day one establish fixed days & hrs of work & stick to them.

• Build in-service days, bank holidays & school holidays into your

business model.

• Do you work Weekends? Evenings?

If your family begins to suffer due to work you will begin to resent and

feel guilty about your career & business.

2. Create clearly defined routines in your business, the more rules &

functions you can establish in your business from day one the better.

3. Plan ahead focus on prioritising, delegating & subcontracting non-

essential roles & functions.

4. The more functions, structures & organised systems you have the less

stressed & pressurised you will feel. Especially on the rare occasions you

need to drop everything for your children if you have an emergency.

5. Co-ordinate with your wife, husband, and partners scheduled holidays

or along with reliable, consistent childcare.

6. Take the business bank holidays off.

7. Start as you mean to go on;

• Unprofessional is ‘over promising & under delivering’ establish

your business model rules (don’t commit to a service you can’t

deliver your customers will respect you for it.)

• Professional is creating restriction from day one layout on your

website etc. i.e. State your business model hours from outset;

Mon-Fri, 9-3pm, annual leave 2 weeks at Easter, Summer &

Christmas.

Designovator Formula 2009©

8. Establish a relationship where your time is by appointment only,

demonstrate you use your answering machine & are not always at their

beck & call (but respond within your stated working hrs).

Remember if you are trying to establish your credibility and have clients

who can't relate to the challenges of the Parent, Dad or Mumpreneur

there are may creative ways to resolve this; you have a prior

engagement (they don't need to know its with your kids and it is an in

service day or school holiday).

9. If you plan to work from home prioritise a designated room (cupboard

or even garden shed) to work from where you can block out any

disturbances & at the end of the day switch off & walk away from.

10. This previous principle applies to business phones or mobiles stipulate

your working hours and out with those times let your answering machine

take over.

11. Utilise the benefits of new technology to buffer functions in your

business.

• Answering machine; Use your answering machine if you are a small

business and your work involves dealing with one customer at a time,

customers understand that you are not always available 24/7.

• Change your answering machine message when you need to for;

bank holidays, training days, conventions and exhibitions. (Or when

you've been let down with child care and the kids have got the

measles). Example; state in your communications that you check

your e-mail & telephone messages at 11am & 2.30pm & will respond

a.s.a.p.

• Alternatively account for a remote PA, there are lots of companies

that offer this service which can be a life line to your business.

• E-mail; Work from home sparingly while looking after the kids & trust

me your customer will be none the wiser.

• Buffer Social Media Marketing; Plan and co-ordinate all your social

media marketing at one appointed time in the week and then

schedule small advertising bites to be issued throughout the working

week. (Especially if you can only work part-time or unconventional

hours this will create a positive impression with customers that you

are a fully functioning business.)

• Utilise new business mediums; Mediums such as using Peopleperhour,

Freelancer and new emerging mediums. These are new concepts of

business and technology still going through teething stages with

mixed reviews from users. Some of these new mediums will become

the norm in business practices of the future and others will

disappear.

Designovator Formula 2009©

• Use formats i.e. Hootsuite to issue continual advertising, blogs &

articles to promote your services to other time zones via; Facebook,

Skype, Linkedin or Twitter etc. while you sleep or look after the kids.

12. Ultimately the biggest ‘Secret’ is the engineering of your business model;

• Could your new business work through the night while your young

children sleep?

• What is unique about your partners work routine that could work to

your advantage?

• Is their any seasonal traits of certain businesses that are quiet or less

demanding during school holidays?

• Could your partner provide functions in your business i.e.

professionally take messages or calls if your unavailable (perceived

as just another employee of the business)

INVENTORS

INVENTORS

We meet lots of inventors who fail to license their products to other companies

which results in them building a business in order to get their invention to market.

Therefore before you begin developing a product it is worth considering;

1. What is your Long term goal?

• To License the product/concept? What if this is not possible?

• Are you prepared to build a business to get your product to market?

• Would you be prepared to build a business that manufactures or simply

distributes your product?

• Could you build a range of products to sustain this business?

2. As outlined in our philosophy of ‘White Ball Thinking’

• Do you have the characteristics essential to become a successful

entrepreneur? (White Ball Thinking)

• Do you understand the 6 key functions to build & operate a business? (Black Box Thinking)

• If not are you prepared to commit to developing these skills?

3. In addition to the normal challenges faced by the business start-up inventors

have a whole set of additional challenges to overcome before reaching this

phase.

How are you going to sustain yourself financially during your invention period?

How long can you sustain yourself financially? 1year? 2 YEARS? 3 years?

4. Your checklist for your invention

Do you have a Budget for the following?

• Prototyping

• IP; Intellectual property i.e. patents & protection of idea.

• Business Plan, Manufacturing, Marketing

• Total Budget

Designovator Formula 2009©

5. Do you have a time scale? Speak to a fellow inventor!

• Sampling

• Final prototyping

• Branding

• IP: Trademark & Patent

• Completion Date/ Co. Sale

6. Do you have experience in this market or business?

7. Do you have routes to market?

8. Contacts in manufacturing/retail?

9. Existing company/customer base?

10. How are you protecting your idea?

• Have you disclosed details of your product to any 3rd parties?

• Do you have a confidentiality agreement?

• Do you have an IP Lawyer?

• Have you filed Design rights?

• Have you filed for a Trademark?

• Have you filed a Patent?

• Do you have academic testing?

• Can you afford all the worldwide rights?

11. Before even looking at patents.

From our personal experience of I.P. Lawyers, Patents, Trademarks, Design Right

and Copyright. We have a few unique suggestions as a small business that has

had a crash course in I.P. and the various pitfalls of I.P. from; facing a lengthy &

costly patenting process to obtain a patent and dealing with a trademark

infringement challenge with one of the biggest internet brands & succeeding.

Please consider the following question and statements:

Do you need your idea protected or not, and what are you prepared to gamble?

No.1 Are you prepared to invest the time and resources to obtain a patent for

your idea or product?

If so -you need a realistic financial plan and funds for a lengthy & costly legal

process that realistically may take 4 to 5 years before you see a return on your

investment.

This does not guarantee a water tight patent that hasn't already been super

ceded or become out of date before you get it to market.

Designovator Formula 2009©

But with a good idea and patent you could potentially have a very lucrative &

legally protected product long term.

Or

No.2 Alternatively with the same resources, finance, time and energy forget a

patent & take the risk of being the first product & brand to market.

Could you prototype, tool and manufacture the product and saturate the market

before the competition catch on?

Could you invest in building a brand synonymous to the product and identifiable

to the consumer, start turning a profit and create something more powerful than a

patent due to your speed & momentum?
