TEXTS MAIN IDEA
Slide 11

( at least 60%) than the original text they omit the original texts
examples, asides, analogies, and rhetorical strategies: ( Holt
Handbook, 5 th Edition) Differ from paraphrases paraphrases more
closely follow the original texts presentation Focus exclusively on
the presentation of the writers main ideas- they do not include
your interpretations or opinions Normally written in your own owrds
they do not contain extended quotes or paraphrases Rely on the use
of standard signal phrases ( According to the author, The author
believes etc)
Slide 12
TIPS ON WRITING A SUMMARY Step 1- Prewriting: Read the
information quickly Try to get a sense of the informations general
focus and content Step 2- Drafting: Restate the phone calls main
idea simply and in your own words Restate each supporting ideas
topic simply and in your own words Step 3-Revising: Combine
sentences in Step 2 to form your summary Edit very carefully for
neatness and correctness.
Slide 13
WHAT TO DO For each of the clients, you will look at the What I
Heard side of the chart and write a summary. Once you are done
first summary, let me know and I will come give you feedback on
what you need to improve to reach expectations. Once this summary
is done properly proceed to writing the next three summaries.
Things to look for Sequencing- Details are placed in a logical
order and the way they are presented effectively keeps the interest
of the reader Accuracy of Facts- All supportive facts are reported
accurately Support for Topic- relevant, telling, quality details
give the reader important information that goes beyond the obvious
or predictable. Once these are complete, choose a summary that you
think is the best of the 4. Hand in the best one for a summative
mark. NOTE: the final summary that you choose for the summative
assessment will mean that you have chosen the client that you wish
to be evaluated for the remainder of the project.
