27-METRE BUSES IN ECUADOR

IN June Scania will start delivering 51 Ci-tywide hybrid buses to Madrid. The order

includes 34 12.7-metre units and 17 14.8-metre ones. All the vehicles meet the EU suburban and short distance Class II regulations. The new Class II specification Scania Citywide can be operated at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The hybrid powertrain includes the Scania 9-litre engine and offers 320 hp with SCR-only technology that is compatible

with up to 100 percent biodiesel and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). On the Citywide buses, the hybrid unit, comprising an electric machine (motor and generator) and automatic clutch, is located between the engine and gearbox. The electric machine is rated at 150 kW and 1,050 Nm. A total of 1.2 kWh of energy storage is provided by a lithium-ion battery integrated in the roof structure at the front of the bus and is housed in a neatly styled bulb together with a DC/DC voltage converter and a cooling unit. The use of a Scania hybrid system together with a DC/DC converter, stop-start function and eco-roll provides significant fuel savings. The 51 buses will be put in service by seven operators on behalf of Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, which holds responsibility for public transport in the Madrid Region. •

INNOVATION IN RACE

V olvo Bus Latin America received an order for 80 bi-articulated buses for the BRT system of

Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The Volvo B340M buses are 27 metres long and can carry 250 passengers. Responsible for the body is Superpolo. This is the first time that bi-articulated buses run in the public transport sy-stem of Quito. The first units startet to operate in May, in time for the city’s anniversary celebrations. Volvo has delivered to date more than 4,000 buses to the BRT-systems of Curitiba, Bogotá, Guatemala City, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile and San Salvador. “Bi-articulates is the best solution to increase the efficiency of urban mass transit sy-stems in large cities. They reduce displacement time; in addition to reducing emissions and operating costs, because they reduce the number of buses on the streets”, said Luis Carlos Pimenta, president of Volvo Bus Latin America. •

IN 2015 Iveco Bus got a record on the envi-ronmental front. For the first time the range

of urban buses powered by natural gas or electric hybrid buses exceeded those fitted with diesel en-gines. The former reached 51% of sales while the others fallen to 49%. “The compressed natural gas buses (CNG) and

hybrid electric buses produced in 2015”, stated Irisbus in a press release, ”made it possible to avoid 10 tons of PM (particulate matter), 100 tons of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) and 10,000 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) ». Leader in gas propulsion, Iveco boasts a fleet of over 5,500 buses circulating today in Europe, of which 2,500 in France, where they represent 95% for CNG buses and other 3,000 between Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Greece. Outside Europe, 302 are in service in Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, while in China 1,400 buses belonging to local brands of Beijing and Shanghai are fitted with Iveco CNG engines. •

THE first quarter of 2016 closed po-sitively for the European bus

market. Based on the data provided by ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Asso-ciation, registrations recorded between January and April totaled 12,338 units, 3.5% more than in the first quarter of 2015. This figure refers to buses with a weight equal to or exceeding 3.5 tons.Among the reference countries of Western Europe, those with a positive balance of re-gistrations are Germany (+13.1%), France (+6.9%) and Spain (+3.7%). On the contrary, Italy (-12.7%) and the UK (-8.3%) are going negative. Remarkable recovery is coming to the markets particularly hard hit by the economic situa-tion, such as Greece (+39.5%) and Portugal

(+68.4%), however in this countries registra-tion of new buses are few, especially in the Hellenic Republic with just 53 buses put into operation in the course of four months. However, the renewal of fleets in Eastern Eu-rope keep going in full swing with Hungary in the lead (+42.4%), followed by Slovenia (+33.3%), Croatia (+28.3), Romania (+23.1) and Slovakia (+ 9.8%). On the contrary, the Czech Republic goes down (-14.5%).In northern Europe we can distinguish Denmark (+47.2%) and the Netherlands (+35.2%). Ireland shows a positive result ei-ther (+36.8%).In area EFTA (European Free Trade Associa-tion) Iceland (+63.3%) and Norway (+9.7%) go positive in contrast to Switzerland where the bus market drops by 23%. •

In Europe the figures show an increase by 3.5% among the registered buses over 3.5 tons. Data provided by ACEA for the period of January-April 2016

deck hybrid buses were handed over to Go Ahead London. Produced by the Bri-tish manufacturer AlexanderDennis Limited (ADL), these buses are part of an order for 74 vehicles with hybrid dr ive , a l l belonging to the double-deck Envi-ro400 range. The vehicles will be gra-dually intro-duced into operation on the London routes by the end of 2016.The acquisi-tion of these buses forms part of a strategy that will see Go Ahead London increase its hybrid fleet to 600 units by the end of this year, representing 26% of their total 2,300 vehicles managed by the operator in the Bri-tish capital.Richard Harrington, Engineering Direc-tor at Go Ahead London, said: «This is a

big year for us and these latest deliveries from ADL represent another quantum leap in terms of staying at the forefront of the drive towards ultra, low-emission vehicles. We will take that effort a stage further la-

ter this year when we in-troduce Eu-rope’s first large-scale fleet of 51 pure electric buses. ADL will again be i nvo l -ved in this project as part of a jo-int initiative with BYD, the Chinese

bus manufacturer».«The aim of Transport for London (TfL), the Authority for public transport in London,” Harrington added, “is to have 300 electric buses in operation by 2020, which is a rea-listic objective in light of the energy supply issues that would surround a whole-scale transition». • More articles about ADL: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/431/articoli-costruttore-europa

S cania inaugurated in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil,

the new technology center with test cells for the development, testing and certification of en-gines. Costed about 10 million Euros, the new structure will be integrated in the current Scania organization for the develop-ment of new products, to sup-port activities aimed at updating local technology as a function of future emissions legislation and the entire production system throughout the Scania en-gine range. The laboratory is able to test and monitor the performance of two motors simultaneously, giving access to all the test data for the tests conducted by both the on-site engineers, but also from those in Sweden. The information collected will be used as the basis for the creation of a new engine, or for the improvement of the existing Scania vehicles. “With this structure we are going to meet the growing global testing requirements on the engines through the search for ever more economically and environmentally sustainable technologies”, said Henrik Alfredsson, Research & Deve-lopment vice president for Scania South America. •

TO improve fleet ef-ficiency by redu-

cing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Here are 5 strategies suggested by TomTom Telematics on the occasion of Earth Day, ce-lebrated on April 22. First: collect data. The more you

have, greater is the ability to analyze and improve the fleet management. “The modern fleet management systems are able to provide information on the fuel efficiency, identifying where and when it is wasted,” explains TomTom Telematics. Second: check your driving style. This is a factor that will greatly affect fuel consumption and thus emissions. “The TomTom Telema-tics predictive guidance solution OptiDrive 360 allowed some customers to achieve savings on the cost of fuel higher than 20%.” Third: communication. The dialogue between the back office and drivers can affect the fuel consumption and the envi-ronmental impact of the fleet because “with a tracking system in the vehicle, like the TomTom LINK 510, it is not necessary that the buses come back to the depot to assign the next mis-sion.” Fourth: to find the most efficient route than the shortest. “The shortest path is not always the most efficient in term of time and cost. The most innovative systems, such as the Dri-ver Terminal TomTom PRO Series, providing updated data on traffic, give the necessary information to find the less congested route.” Fifth: take care of the fleet. Even minor maintenance, maybe neglected, can make the difference. •

company Land Transport Authority (LTA) presented two double-decker bus concepts: one developed by AlexanderDennis (ADL) and the other by the Ma-laysian company Gemilang on MAN chassis. The vehicles of-fer innovative features like USB ports for each passenger, voice information displays and systems to detect driver fatigue. They also adopt new door concepts for better flowing and more comfortable access. Masats participated in the development of the MAN Lion’s City DDL, for which a 3-door concept was chosen with one wide front sliding door and two sliding doors near the middle of the vehicle. The third door is exclusively designed for top-deck passengers, allowing faster exits without interferences from passengers leaving the lower deck. The new type of double-decker buses with the new door configuration and other improvements is expected to be put into use over the next few months. •

IN late April, Mercedes met the interna-tional press to give opportunities to

those who had not yet took a ride with the main Mercedes-Benz models making its way through the streets of Mannheim, Germany. One could try a wide range of busses from the Travego L to the Safety Coach version, from the Sprinter City 65 to the Capacity L. But the icing on the cake was the Citaro NGT powered by compressed natural gas.The Citaro NGT (Natural Gas Technology), presented at Kortijk Busworld in October 2015, proposes a new look and new features offering many advantages compared to its predecessor

T he Citaro NGT uses the re-cent improvements made to

the Citaro range, such as the front rounded end, the collision prevention system for the driver, the low side window line, the LED headlights (optional). The interior is welcoming and bright. The vehicle tested in Mannheim offered an example with the flo-oring in dark brown wood look, the internal LED lighting, the access courtesy lights, the 29-inch TFT monitor and five char-ging stations for smartphones. The City Star Eco upholstery is produced in-house. Among the news, there are the folding seats of the latest generation: larger and available (includi-

ng) in double or mother/child version. The driving position is raised and features a VDA ergo-nomic instrumental panel. The cockpit is ventilated and is se-parately air-conditioned. There

is a large central color display, the swiveling Grammer Linea/Tourea adjustable driver’s seat with pneumatic shock absor-ption and lumbar support, the electromagnetic driver’s door

starting from lower fuel consumption (15-20%) and CO2 emissions (up to 10% less compared to diesel), to the improved smooth-running with even lower noise emissions undercut by up to 4 dB (A), with bigger intervals for changing the engine oil and spark plugs extended to 60,000 kilometres. The vehicle was fitted with the new M 936 six in-line-cylinder gas engine, which is

based on the OM 936 turbodiesel.Another advantage of the Citaro NGT solo bus is the increased capacity that allows transpor-ting 96 instead of previous 93 passengers, while the articulated bus version can carry up to 153 instead of previous 149 passengers. All this is due to the vehicle’s reduced weight, in addition to the more compact engine almost 25 percent

lighter than the predecessor engine with a di-splacement of 12.0 litres, the considerably in-creased capacity of the gas cylinders (from 190 to 227 litres each) and the consequent reduction in gas cylinders number (one less with weight savings of 15 to 45 kg). The newly developed gas cylinders are made of composite material with a plastic core, a casing is made of carbon

fiber and an additional glass fiber is a new fea-ture. The gas cylinders are positioned above the front axle on the solo bus (above the centre axle on the articulated bus) with two different covers accommodating either four to six gas cylinders or seven to eight. But let’s get down to the Mannheim drive test. The Citaro NGT has been tested over a distan-

Page 11: BUSTOCOACH EUROPEAN ON-LINE MAGAZINE - June 2016

T he heart of the Citaro NGT is the new M 936 gas engine

based on the OM 936 turbodiesel. Mounted vertically, this compact power unit weighs just 747 kg including the primary catalytic converter. It is a 7.7-litre engine, delivering 222 kW (302 hp) and

able to achieve a constant maxi-mum torque of 1,200 Nm be-tween 1,200 and 1,600 rpm. The cylinder block and four-valve cylinder head were adopted from the diesel engine and adapted for operation on CNG. On the con-trary, the turbocharger, charge-air

ducting, ignition and injection system have been newly devel-oped. Due to the practically soot-free combustion, the engine does not require the SCR technology with AdBlue injection or a partic-ulate filter. In natural gas engine the exhaust gases are purified by

means of a three-way catalyst converter. CO2 emissions also fell by 10% compared to diesel, and in case of using biomethane they become CO2 neutral. The gearbox is (equipped) fitted with a torque converter, and the cus-tomers can choose between the

ZF or Voith brand. The test vehi-cle in Mannheim was fitted with the six-speed ZF Ecolife. The drive ratio is slightly shorter than the diesel and corresponds to i = 5.82 for the 12-metre version and i = 6.98 for the articulated bus. The ESP is upon request. •

ce of (a good 12 km among industrial areas, high-speed sections and residential areas at low speed. The vehicle showed a good capacity of acceleration that corresponds to the characteri-stics of its diesel counterpart OM 936. The vehi-cle moved gently but swiftly departing from the bus stops. Then, the bus coped effortlessly with both the climb and the increase in speed in the

area with the limit of 70 km/h, also showing a slight variation of noise emissions. The front axle with independent wheel suspension gently cushions any bumps in the road, and the vehi-cle remained unperturbed even crossing over the railway that normally gives a thorough shaking. Another talent was shown when entering the parking place, where the rigid bus performed

the necessary turning manoeuvres. The Citaro NGT reached the market after three years of arduous tests under the most demandi-ng conditions, undergoing altitude testing at ele-vations of up to 1,600 m with a total distance of 130,000 kilometres covered by three test vehi-cles. Full series production started this spring. The Citaro NGT however represents the Daim-

ler transitional solution aimed at the zero-emis-sion buses. Developments in progress include a compact hybrid component for the Citaro with diesel engine and the Citaro E-CELL running exclusively on electric power, whose premie-re has been announced for 2018. This will be followed by the Citaro F-CELL with fuel-cell drive. •

O ne more time there is a Setra Business, namely, the version with functional in-

terior aimed at maintaining an ideal quali-ty-price ratio not only in terms of acquisition value but also in terms of maintenance and general operating costs. Last year we tested the Setra S 415 UL raised-floor bus (refer to BusToCoach Magazine of May 2015). This time it’s the turn of the low entry 12.3-me-tre S 415 LE. A bus with a low floor till the second door makes getting on and off the bus easier and is used for medium-range intercity routes. We have tested it along the mixed route of 372 kilometres (two-thirds on the public ro-ads) that we normally use for comparing the intercity buses. (See the table at end of the article).

T he interior is simple and practical as it is usually re-

quired by the regular-service buses. The important thing is to ensure a good level of comfort and at the same time to make easy the ordinary maintenance with easy-to-clean trim panels in plastic laminate. The LE 415 has the low flo-or till the second door. In this area there are the Setra Transit seats (with integrated headrest, handrails and 2-point lap belts), mounted on a 190-mm raised base. Ahead of the rear axle, two steps each of 220 mm afford ac-cess to the rear section. In case of approval as Class I (city bus) it will be modified for access via three 152-mm steps. At the second door there are the manual ramp and the wheelchair space. The luggage racks running the

full length of both sides of the ceiling are nice and spacious (2.5 cubic metres), with mesh bottoms and handrails in tubu-lar chrome (on the left luggage rack). They are flanked by air distribu-

tion duc- ting blowing towards the windows through the air vents. There is the EvoCool Basis roof-mounted air-con-ditioning system with 32 kW cooling capacity. The Spheros Thermo 300 is responsible for

heating installed behind the rear door rightwards. The cockpit is common for the Setra MultiClass models, with a pneumatic swiveling Isri seat, on the two-step raised basis above the interior floor level.•

THE TEST ROUTEPASSENGERS

There were no surprises. In fact, the S 415 LE mirrored the performance shown by the UL version and it could not occur in a diffe-rent manner as far as they have some iden-tical total weight (loaded up to 17,700 kg) and the same OM 936 engine delivering 354 horsepower (260 kW) behind the rear hood. The adopted ZF EcoLife automatic transmission is equal either; the only thing that differed was the lon-ger final drive ratio for the S 415 LE (4,778 instead of 5,222 of the UL). With this configuration, at the same speed, the engine number of revolutions is lower and the fuel consumption respec-tively. Developing slightly more than 1,200 rpm, the S 415 LE travels 80 km/h and at 1,550 drives 100 km/h, always remaining in the field, where the ma-ximum engine torque is available. The average consumption was of a litre of diesel per each 4.18 km (including the por-tion of AdBlue equivalent), traveling at the average of 65.1 km/h. In other words, it con-

Even the S 415 LE Business was submitted to the drive

test with the most powerful ver-sion of the 7.7-litre OM 936. That implies 354 horsepower (260 kW) and 1,400 Nm of torque instead of the version de-livering 299 horsepower offered as standard. In a vertical configuration, the six-cylinder Mercedes engine belongs to the new generation of BlueEfficiency Power engi-nes with common rail injection system, high-pressure pump (2,400 bar) and two-stage tur-bocharger.The longer service intervals of up to 90 thousand kilometres are quite impressive. The reduction of pollutant emissions is achie-ved through the combination of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and post-treatment with oxidi-zing catalytic converter, a parti-culate filter (DPF) and a catalyst (SCR) with AdBlue injection (a 23-litre tank as the fuel consu-

mption does not exceed 2.7%). Everything is electronically con-trolled by the ACM module. The test vehicle was fitted with the ZF Ecolife six-speed auto-matic transmission instead of the Mercedes manual gearbox

offered as standard. Alternatively you may also have the Voith au-tomatic or the GO 250-8 MPS eight-speed automatic transmis-sion. As an option, there is a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). •

sumed a bit more than the UL (4.30 km/l) at a higher-than-average speed (63.8 km/h for the UL). As a result, the overall index performan-ce is almost the same: 7.62 for the LE and 7.68 for the UL. The Irizar i4 (another Euro VI intercity) earlier tested by BusToCoach, must settle for third place, even though with a difference of a few decimal places. The two-entry configuration, typical for the Low Entry bus, in this case has single-wing doors with a glazed sec-tion (nominal width of 1.150 mm), both pneu-matically driven and swinging outwards, al-lowing the installation of a manually operated ramp at the second door.It is worth noticing that the test vehicle was fit-ted with 295/80 R 22.5 tyres, but 275/70 R 22.5 tyres can also be applied to remove 40-45 mm of the access threshold height (345 mm at the front and 385 in the center of the vehicle), however, already lowered to 70 mm using the kneeling function. The S 415 LE leaves the completeness of the safety systems unaltered, especially the braking system that does not miss anything, featuring the ESP either. Moreover, the frame structure has been further optimised, certified in terms of rollover resistance according to the ECE-R 66/02 regulation. •
