BY DIANNE FEAVER Special to the North Star PARRY SOUND - The Station Gallery is this month exhibiting two distinct bodies of work by artist Jon Oelrichs. Landscape of Origin: Landscape of Choice is part of an ongoing, four-year series that draws from Mr. Oelrichs’ childhood years in the Pennines of North England and his ‘new environment’ at the edge of the Ontario Oro Moraine. Mr. Oelrichs reverses the common method of doing small field sketches as a point of refer- ence for later–and usually larger–studio pieces. He says that “working so close to home has made it possi- ble to carry relatively large can- vasses out into the landscape and paint from direct encounter. I use these larger canvasses as a point of departure for smaller works, moving away from the literal landscape, condensing the work.” This procedure has allowed Mr. Oelrichs to use alternative supports. Several studio pieces are painted on steel using a vari- ety of media including acrylic, oil and beeswax. Mr. Oelrichs’ Landscape of Origin abstractions are at the same time harmonious and dra- matic. His use of scale and gen- tly-grayed colour fields directly contrasts compositions of dra- matic, angular lines. These works contrast again with the colourful, loosely ges- tured works in Landscape of Choice. Mr. Oelrichs says that “though made at different stages, I view both works on canvas and the smaller works on steel as fully resolved pieces. I like to exhibit them together.” The Parry Sound Station Gallery will be exhibiting Jon Oelrichs’ work from October 7 to November 2. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Donation or sponsorship accepted. 6 - PARRY SOUND NORTH STAR Wednesday October 26, 2005 1.
