WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA

• Social media is any website that allows us to communicate with anyone, anywhere at anytime.

• Twitter can be categorized as a social media website because it allows you to send messages to a group of people and interact with them.

WHAT IS TWITTER?

• Twitter is an online social media site where you can post and read short (140 character ) messages called tweet

• You can post pictures, tweets, links and more

• Major companies use this to an advantage as advertisement

HOW WAS TWITTER CREATED

• The idea of twitter came out when Jack Dorsey (university student) wanted to create a way to communicate with all his friends at the same time.

• after working on the project solo for a while he later brought his theory to a company. He convinced the head (Noah Glass) that it would be a success and so he launched it

Fun Fact:When twitter was first

created its original name was “Twttr” but was later changed to

“twitter”.

HOW TO USE TWITTER

1)While on the internet, go to www.twitter.com/signup

2)Type in your full name, current email address and think of a password and put that information in the given spaces

3)Next you will have a chance to pick a username, type your desired username into the space given

4)After you have chosen your username you will be directed to your personal twitter homepage.

5) If you would like to post a “tweet”, you will have to click on the box where it says “What's happening” and write a message of your choice. When you have written your message click on the button that says “tweet” to post it.

6) You may “Retweet” any messages that you may have liked, just click the“retweet”button underneath the message .

7) To make searching easier you can use # and a word (e.g. #Smile) to categorize different tweets and posts

8) You may follow people by clicking the “follow”

9) The more interesting things you post, the more followers you get which concludes in you gaining more popularity.

WHY TWITTER MAY USEFUL TO 7TH GRADERS • To learn about different peoples lives• Replacement for calling or meeting the

person• Easier way to communicate with a group of

people• A lot of people use it as a diary of

moments in their lifetime and to share thoughts and emotions

• Many play the advertised games on twitter

NEGATIVE AFFECTS OF TWITTER

• Causes addiction which distracts them from other activities and school.

• Interest in school decreases

• Since the amount that can be written is limited, kids use informal speaking such as slang, internet shortcuts (R- are, U-you PLZ-please etc.) this in most cases leads the student to make more grammatical errors in the students work.

• Due to excessive amount of time used on this website students may result in being addicted and in some cases ruin their eyes.

HOW TWITTER INFLUENCED THE SOCIETY • Allows to chat with those who are far

away

• Causes those who are close to each other to become more distant because all of their time is on twitter

• Causes lack of interest in the their work

• Causes addiction

• Allows to know what others are doing
