This is an important issue because people’s lives are more dependent on technology than ever before
Less and less of social interactions occur face-to-face
Technology is only going to become a more significant aspect of our lives
Important to see the effect today to understand the potential effect tomorrow
To determine the frequency with which students use social media, and the effect of these technologies on social norms

Seeing the effects today allows for a more accurate prediction of the situation in the future
Develop ways to minimize downsides and maximize benefits of technology
Began by gathering relevant resources using Diigo, and highlighting important points
Created and conducted a student survey to determine how often students use social media, and what they thought was acceptable conduct
Combined primary and secondary research to develop a sense of how students and adults felt that technology impacted their lives
Analyzed this data and inputted results into this presentation
Facebook users are more likely to be involved in community and political activities, and are 43% more likely to vote
People have larger circles of friends Communicate more often due to ease
Tips to Maximize Benefits Use technology with moderation Be careful with what you say online, body
language is not conveyed Do not substitute face-to-face interactions
entirely with online chats
Driving while texting causes 11000 deaths per year in Ontario Privacy is threatened because anyone can access your
information Body language cannot be conveyed through most social media
platforms Fewer face-to-face interactions Potential for addiction
Tips to Minimize Problems Change privacy settings to only allow friends to access your
information Only use during free time Do not say anything you would not say in person Avoid using sarcasm online, because no one can see your
expressions
Social norms and relationships are changing for the better as a result of technology
It is easier to meet new people and communicate regularly than ever before
Survey results show that the majority of students use social media, so it is important to learn proper etiquette online
There are negative aspects, but these are far outweighed by the benefits
Computer studies teachers should teach students proper web etiquette
Students should use social media for educational purposes as well
