How Tocqueville Saw It

Quotes about Appearance:“If I had to class human miseries, I should put them in this order: 1st. Illnesses. 2nd.

Death. 3rd. Doubt.” "This city of 200,000 souls resembles none of those that I have seen up to now. It is of a

regularity that one is tempted to find too perfect. Not a street but traverses the entire city in one direction or another; and all of them are laid out with geometric precision. All the edifices are neat, kept up with extreme care, and have all the freshness of new buildings. It's a charming city, very favorable to those who have no carriage, since all the streets are bordered with wide side- walks; and its sole defect, I repeat, is to be monotonous in its beauty."

"Philadelphia is an immense city. You can convince yourself of it for it occupies the entire space between the Delaware and the Schuikil [sic]. All the houses are of brick, and without portes cocheres following the English custom, and the streets straight as a string. The regularity is tiresome but very convenient. Philadelphia is, I believe, the only city in the world where it has occurred to people to distinguish the streets by numbers and not by names. The system of streets is so regular that, starting from the Delaware where it is Street No. 1, one goes up number by number all the way to the Schuikil.”

“I am living at Street No. 3. Don't you find that only a people whose imagination is frozen could invent such a system? Europeans never fail to join an idea to each external object, be it a saint, a famous man, an event. But these people here know only arithmetic.“

How Tocqueville Saw It

Quotes about Blacks and Whites:“Mr. Smith, a very well-informed and able Quaker of Philadelphia told us

today that he was perfectly convinced that the Negroes were of the same race as us, just as a black cow is of the same race as a white one. The Negroes were of the same race as us, just as a black cow is of the same race as a white one. The Negro children show as much intelligence as the white ones; often they learn faster. We asked him if the blacks had citizens' rights. He answered, "Yes, in law, but they cannot present themselves at the poll.”

Quotes about Seasons:“The autumn here is admirable, the sky pure and sparkling as on the most

beautiful summer days. The woods have a very much more varied foliage than in Europe at the same time of year. All the shades of red and green are mingled together; this is really the moment when America appears in all her glory.”

History of Philadelphia

Summary-It started out with William Penn in the 1600s. Then

in 1776, Philadelphia became famous for the meeting for the Declaration of Independence. Also, Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, and the Liberty bell. For a short time the city was the capital, and they were once the biggest city in the U.S. After the capital was moved to Washington D.C. Philadelphia’s population decreased, but the city still was a strong historical landmark. They are very strong politically and will always be remembered.

Physical Environment Impacts

The location of Philadelphia is key to its success and part time nation’s capital.

Philadelphia has access to the Delaware and Chesapeake Bay.

The city is close to many important cities, including the nations current capital.

The Appalachian Mountains provide a small barrier between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

There is not enough space for farming or agriculture, so the city relies mostly on industry and trade.

The city was once very polluted due to the amount of manufacturing.

Two People Who Influenced Community

Benjamin Franklin influenced the Philadelphia society through press, editorials, and strong words. Some of his inventions now originate from Philadelphia, and certain important historical landmarks. For example, Join or Die the political cartoon, and the rocking chair.

On the topic of rocking chairs, Betsy Ross also influenced the Philadelphia community. She sat along side George Washington and many other famous men. She helped to inspire many people who lived through the Revolution. Most importantly, was her work on the flag. Her hard work and dedication was very patriotic. Continuing on, she lived in Philadelphia her whole life, and the only records of her home are in Philadelphia.

Proposal/Conclusion

In our opinion, Southwestern PA should take more advantage of its industrial and economic past. Like Philadelphia, we should start highlighting historical and important places. In Pittsburgh this could be our steel past and the Ohio River Valley was crucial to winning battles. Also, Pittsburgh once was a famous Fort and we, as a city, could highlight that to attract tourists.

Planning this road trip was a very interesting experience for us, and we learned much about Philadelphia, its past, and how to plan a road trip.
