Antoni Gaudí’s early life

• Antoni Gaudí was the youngest of 5 children. All but one of his siblings died in childhood. Gaudí was a sick child and as a result he did not play much with other children. Instead of playing he took walks and observed the countryside. It was during this period that Antoni Gaudí’s fascination of architecture and design grew.

1877• In 1877 Antoni Gaudí built the Casa Batllό. The local name

for the building is Casa dels ossos which means the house of bones. It has a skeletal organic quality and the outside looks like it is made from skulls and bones. The building was remodeled in 1904 to 1906. The building was designed by Gaudí for Josep Batlló, a wealthy aristocrat, as an upmarket home. Señor Batlló lived in the lower two floors with his family and the upper floors were rented out as apartments.

1926• On June 7, 1926 Antoni Gaudí was hit/ run over by a tram.

Since he looked very dirty and unclean many cab drivers refused to pick him up in fear that he wouldn’t pay the fare. He was eventually taken to a paupers’ hospital in Barcelona. No one knew who he was because he spent all of his time hidden away working. His friends found him the next day. His friends tried to take Gaudí to a nicer hospital, he refused and said “ I belong here among the poor.” Antoni Gaudí died three days later on June 10, 1926. He died of the age of 73. He was buried in the middle of La Sagrada Família. Half of Barcelona was mourning his death.
