Anticipatory Set: Teacher will review prior unit, Roman Empire, link it to lesson

for today – new unit, Byzantine Empire.Modeling/Guided Practice:Teacher will introduce new unit and provide lesson on:

How Eastern Roman Empire survived after the fall of the Western Empire, and became known as the Byzantine Empire

How Greek, Roman, and Christian culture were blended in the Byzantine Empire after the fall of the Roman Empire;

Accomplishments of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora Teacher will introduce a play to be read by each student, then acted

in each class period with all students participating either as a character or as the Chorus (Greek style Theater)

Independent Practice/Affiliation: Students will work at own pace in centers, but meet expected

timelines for completion of a block of required assignments including mapping/geography; vocabulary, reading and writing.

Students will preview a play about Justinian and Theodora, to be practiced each day until performance day, Monday, March 8.

Check for Understanding: Teacher will circulate during Independent Practice - assist with

accurate completion of assignments

Closure: Summarize/restate objectives, remind students to work on unit

assignments at least 15 minutes daily outside of classRe-teach Activities/Objectives:Analyze Friday test results to determine need for re-teaching this week (Ancient Rome)
