Bench TipsSanding DisksOne of my favorite flexshafttools that saves a lot of time is thesnap-on sanding disk. I mainlyuse the medium and fine grits butsometimes like the very fine onessold for working with platinum.Ordinarily, you'd think ofplacing the disk on the mandrelwith the grit side facing awayfrom your hand, but notice thatyou end upwith your elbow up inthe air. Instead, try flipping thedisk so that thegrit side is towardsyour hand. It's a much morecomfortable position because theelbow is downnear your side, andit lets you hold the work up closewhere you have a better view ofwhat you are sanding.I use these snap-on disks so frequently that I keep multiplemandrelswithdifferent grits alreadymounted in thebur stand. Some mandrels have the grit facing out and some facing in.

Easier Prong SettingWhen setting stones in a prong mount, the tool is less likelyto slip off the prong if you grind a groove into its face or roughup the face a bit with sandpaper. Some folks prefer a prongpusher for doing this, and others like a set of pliers. The easiest way to create a slot on the pusher is with a file, and the easiest way to create a slot on one jaw of your pliersis with a cutoff wheel. Then do a rough polish on the slot witha medium grit, knife-edge silicone wheel.Be More Productive With Brad's How To Do It" BooksAmazon.com/author/bradfordsmith
