According to a press re- lease, the annual award will Arecognize a horse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the American public and gained recognition for the sport during the past year.@ Chenery will pres- ent owners Jerry and Ann Moss with a custom- made trophy during a ceremony at Santa Anita Feb. 5. AHorse racing already has established avenues to award outstanding accomplishments, and we certainly should honor superior performance,@ Chenery said in a state- ment. AI think racing fans will be just as excited about this award as I am, and we welcome everyone to come and share in the presentation festivities on Feb. 5,@ Chenery added. SIDNEY’S CANDY BACK IN TRAINING Grade I winner Sidney=s Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}),scratched on the eve of the GII San Fernando S. lastweekend, is back on track after undergoing a nuclearscan Monday, according to Daily Racing Form. Theexamination showed no injury to his right hind foot.AThe good news is that he=s okay,@ trainer John Sadlertold DRF. AHe went back to the track [Wednesday].@Winner of the GI Santa Anita Derby last April, thechestnut captured Del Mar=s GII La Jolla H. in his turfdebut this summer, when he established a new courserecord of 1:39.52 for 8 1/2 furlongs. The Craighomebred most recently captured the off-the-turf GIII Sir Beaufort S. by 7 1/4 lengths on Santa Anita=sopening day, and will now point for the GI Frank E.Kilroe Mile on the Arcadia sod Mar. 5. AI like the tim-ing,@ Sadler added. AI want to save him for the big raceslater this year.@

Brethren Bound for Tampa... WinStar=s unbeaten Brethren (Distorted Humor), thehalf-brother to GI Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver(Maria=s Mon), could make his stakes bow in the GIIISam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Feb. 12, according toDaily Racing Form. AHis first start will most likely comein the Sam Davis at Tampa,@ trainer Todd Pletcher toldDRF. AWe=re looking for some graded earnings, havehad luck there in the past, and I like the one-mile andsixteenth distance--it=s just more attractive than bring-ing him back at a mile and an eighth.@ Brethren closedout 2010 with an allowance score under the TwinSpires Nov. 27, and Pletcher did compare the sopho-more to his elder brother. AObviously the pedigree isthere and he has the affinity for Churchill Downs--wesaw that in his allowance win there,@ Pletcher added.AWe=re very high on him.@

FIFTH THIRD BANK FILES SUIT AGAINSTGULF COAST FARMS According to published re-ports, Fifth Third Bank has filed suit against Gulf CoastFarms, alleging that Gulf Coast defaulted on loanstotalling more than $15 million in 2009 and 2010. Thepapers were filed in Fayette Circuit Court in LexingtonJan. 5. Fifth Third is petitioning to have Keeneland turnover Gulf Coast=s net profits from the dispersal of stockat the November Sale to the court. Richard Getty, theattorney for Gulf Coast, told Daily Racing Form that acountersuit would be filed, and that Fifth Third Bank didnot hold the primary lien on all of the horses sold atKeeneland November. ACeltic Bank has the first, prior, and superior lien [on six of the mares sold], but, despiteFifth Third acknowledging Celtic Bank has a first lien, they=ve continued to try and hold up dispersal to CelticBank, which would substantially pay off Gulf Coast=sloan to that entity, insisting that funds be paid tothem,@ Getty told DRF. AI assume there is going to besignificant dispute over the priorities involving a numberof the horses that Fifth Third claiming the proceeds of,including a number of horses that were owned by les-sees.@ He added, AI assume all these issues are going tobe resolved by the court as expeditiously as possible.@
