CONCERT SERIES APRIL 19TH • GRAND HALL • 7 PM The Z Street Duo features vocalist and trumpet player Mark Zauss along with tenor saxo- phone player and vocalist Kathy Zauss. This multi-tasking musical duo plays Swing, Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Oldies, R&B/Soul, Pop, Rock, Party Songs, and today's current hits. The Z Street Duo brings to the stage a sound that is uniquely theirs, setting them apart from the typical duo that tends to sound the same, song after song. They use no outdated sequences, synthesizers, or midi files. They are accompanied by a live recording of piano, bass, drums and guitar. Mark and Kathy spent 45 hours in the recording studio with live piano, bass, drums and guitar players painstakingly creating their background recordings. This innovative concept gives clients with limited stage space or budgets the option of hearing the full sound of a band with only two musicians/vocalists. Whether they are playing jazz for an intimate cocktail reception, or keeping the dance floor packed with party tunes, Mark and Kathy deliver every time. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE MEETS The newly formulated HOA Communications Committee recently had its first organizational meetings under

the interim direction of Elmer Riggin, Board of Directors Liaison. The Communications Committee is tasked with providing Pennbrooke residents with timely and accurate information about events and decisions affecting them. The committee will attempt to separate fact from fiction and share information with residents as it develops.

A survey of all residents will help determine how best to communicate with everyone. This first survey will be posted on the community website on April 1. It will ask you to indicate your preferred communication method for receiving information on items of interest to the entire community.

Examples of communication methods the committee will use include e-mail, cable TV, bulletin board, Pennbrooke.org website, and the monthly Pennbrooke Fairways Activities Review. Already underway, are plans to place a computer and printer in the library at the Welcome Center where residents will have direct ac-cess to the community website and all of its information. The Pennbrooke Computer Club has offered to donate a computer and printer for this purpose.

The committee is also considering placing a suggestion box in the mailroom where residents can communi-cate their concerns, ask questions and leave suggestions. The committee members are very receptive to any and all feedback from the community concerning this additional channel of communication .

Committee members currently include Bob Brockes, Co-Chairman; Jerry Kutsop, Secretary; Doris Browder, Barbara Gordon, Phil Johnson, Gerri Ness, Doreen Roethler, and Beverly Stock. Assisting the committee are Elmer Riggin, Board of Directors Liaison; and Ira Makashay, Community Website Administrator.

To our friends in Pennbrooke, we would like to express our gratitude for your thoughts, prayers and kindness during this difficult time, with the pass-ing of Russ Fluehr.

Thank you for being there for us. —Jean Fluehr & Ken

I would like to send out a very big THANK YOU to everyone who called, sent cards and kept us in your prayers during Marion‟s recent surgery. She is doing great and has had the second part done on March 18th. This was the last

procedure. She is home resting now and is improving daily.

—Jim Papson

Pennbrooke Woman‟s Golf Club… The women‟s golf club held an invitational tourna-ment on November 4, 2010. All proceeds from this tournament were donated to Hospice of Lake & Sum-ter counties. Shown above is Dawn Balent and Barb Korzelius Co-Chairman of the event and Cheryl Adams the club president. Receiving the check in the amount of $1,500 is Nick Buchholtz and Susan Bennett repre-sentatives of Hospice. What a wonderful event for such a great organization. Thanks to all the ladies.

PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS 8 ACTIVITIES REVIEW — APRIL 2011

PENNBROOKE ARMY CLUB

LUXEMBOURG AND THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE By Bud Manown

Luxembourg is a small country surrounded by Ger-many, Belgium and France, and is the country that was most appreciative of American help during WW II. Lux-embourg was occupied by the German Army, and the populous was treated badly. They were forbidden to wear their berets and had to speak only German, among other indignities.

Luxembourg was adjacent to Bastogne, which is in Belgium, and was a part of the infamous “Battle of the Bulge.” Our Combat Engineer Battalion, a unit of the U.S. Third Army under the command of General Pat-ton, was sent to liberate the last town occupied by the Germans in Luxembourg, a small medieval town called Vianden. We accomplished the liberation with numer-ous deaths and wounded. I estimate we lost about 20 men and had many wounded. The Germans threw at us artillery, mortars, infantry and tanks. By this time, the German Luftwaffe was pretty much all destroyed.

After the war, the Luxembourgers formed a society called “CEBA” which was a study of the battles of the Ardens. Every five years they hold ceremonies to keep the memories alive. They decided to repair the fronts of their buildings, leaving all the war damage visible in the rear, as a reminder.

Our unit held reunions in Vianden in 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and my wife, sons and I attended the first two of them. The first one was held in February 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that battle. The appreciation and love of the people was overwhelming and one of our most treasured memo-ries. There are numerous statues and plaques in surrounding towns commemorating the U.S. military who were killed there.

Other countries also remember the Americans who fought there and did not return home. There are beautifully kept graves with stones for the departed and American flags flowing in the breeze.

One of America‟s greatest generals in the Euro-pean theater of operations was General George S. Patton. The German General Staff recognized him as their most feared enemy opponent. General Pat-ton is buried with his men in a military cemetery in Luxembourg. It has a simple cross for his marker. The embossed plate reads under his four stars: Geo. S. Patton, General, 02605, 3rd ARMY. Mrs. Patton wanted to be laid next to her husband when she passed away, but she was told that only military members who were killed in Luxembourg could be buried there. When she died, her cremated ashes were spread over General Patton‟s grave.

The memories of that time, and my friends who did not return, are put away; but never to be forgotten.

NEW BEGINNER’S Line Dancing Class Mark your calendars in red for Tuesday, May 3, if

you want to add some fun to your life. That is the start of the next new Beginner‟s Class for Line Dancing. It will be held in the Grand Hall, and runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 until 5PM. The classes are de-signed so that even people who have never danced before can join in.

This type of dancing is done without a partner, but we have many couples who attend. It is ideal for both men and women. Lessons are $1 each class. If you‟ll come early, you can enjoy meeting the great people who attend and have a cup of coffee with new and old friends.

These are fun classes, not intended to put you on “Dancing with the Stars”, but to mainly laugh and so-cialize. Dancing is the best exercise for people over 50, helping improve strength, balance, and brain func-tion (although it hasn‟t helped me yet in that area!). You will be receiving a note in your internal mailbox closer to the date to remind you. Please plan to at-tend. If you have questions, call Peter Statham at 787-9653, or Shirley Hedge at 321-4019.

LADIES SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT RESULTS...March 14 thru 18 was the Tri-County Golden Ladies Softball Tournament, which was held at Spruce Creek. The Pennbrooke Ladies played against Stone Crest on Monday and won 19 to 4. Then they played Tuesday against Summer Glen and won 10 to 1. Then on Wednesday they played Holiday Travel, the number one team in their division, and won again with the score be-ing 14 to 4.

The two teams playing for the Championship are Holi-day Travel, with one loss and one win against the unde-feated Pennbrooke Ladies; and The Winning Team Is Pennbrooke, Scoring 7 to 5. Pennbrooke out scored their opponents 50 to 14.

Congratulation to the Pennbrooke Ladies on a great season and winning the TCGL 2011 Tournament!

PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS 9 ACTIVITIES REVIEW — APRIL 2011

LIGHT-WEIGHT WHEELCHAIRS NEEDED!!

The Medical Supply Closet needs a donation of 2 to 3 Light-weight (Transport) Wheelchairs.

If you have one or know where we can find one, please contact Denny Reed at 323-8849, Roland Edwards at 360-0370, or Dick Davis at 360-7000. The Medical Sup-ply Closet operates without a budget and relies on the donation of equipment to meet the needs of the residents of Pennbrooke. The players clubs have graciously do-nated enough funds to purchase two new wheel chairs for the medical closet, but still more are needed. Please help if you can.

TOPS NEWS… By Shari and Wally Pretzer New officers for TOPS are: President — Pat Camp Vice President — Isabel Beasley Secretary — Wilma Tucker Treasurer — Lottie Pavlovich Program Director — Linda Long Weight Recorders — Anne Rusk & Mary Jane

LEESBURG — The Lakefront City Elimination of Reminder Notices: THIS IS IMPORTANT!!

On November 22, 2010 the City Commission approved the elimination of reminder notices for delinquent utility accounts, beginning May 1, 2011. After that date, past-due customers will no longer receive a separate reminder notice in the mail prior to service shut-off. The City of Leesburg requires payments to be made within twenty (20) days from the billing date. If not paid by the due date, the customer is given ten (10) additional days before ser-vices are disconnected. Customers who pay beyond the due date are subject to a 5% penalty.

FROM THE RSO By Joan and Rose

Once again, it is almost time for the "snowbirds" to fly North. If you are going to be away from Pennbrooke for six weeks or more, please fill out a vacation form (available at the RSO) so we are aware you are out of the community, and we have an address and phone number to contact you, if necessary.

If you would like the monthly Newsletter mailed to your summer address, it will be necessary to give us an envelope addressed to your summer location for each issue you want sent. The News-letter will fit in a standard #10 business envelope and can be mailed for $.61 an issue. This is the current mailing rate. We will only accept standard #10 envelopes. It is not necessary to buy stamps— just bring in the addressed envelopes, pay us for the postage, and we will affix postage from the me-ter when mailed. Newsletters are mailed the same day the issues are placed in the internal boxes. Remember... #10 envelopes only.

Interested in saving money? Visit the Pennbrooke website, www.pennbrooke.org and read the newsletters for free!

Happy Spring to all from the RSO.

SENIORS vs. CRIME... ...a special project of the Florida Attorney General, is looking for volunteers to work in the Pennbrooke Fair-ways office. We need folks who are computer literate and who interact well with people, both face-to-face and on the telephone. Our volunteers assist clients who are victims of financial fraud, scams, contractual disputes with vendors and other, sometimes complex financial/civil problems. Please stop by the office in the Welcome Center on Tuesdays from 10AM to 2PM to fill out an application. Steve Renico, Deputy Director, Region IV Seniors vs. Crime

How To Gain YOUR Balance Back! — Discussion by Sara Johns During the month of April, the Grand Hall will hold a free seminar on the exercises to im-prove balance and coordination. A sign-up sheet will be available for all residents of Pennbrooke. This discussion is about why people tend to lose their balance, how to avoid this from occurring to you, and multiple exercises to help you improve your balance and coordination. It will help all residents to improve their balance and to help prevent falls from occurring. There will be plenty of time for

questions, snacks to enjoy, as well as a preview to our next lecture! So mark your calendars and come by the Grand Hall on April 27th, 2011 @ 1:00PM.

PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS 10 ACTIVITIES REVIEW — APRIL 2011

GOLF CLUB NEWS...“Did you know??” (# 2)

Pennbrooke RV Travelers Club... On Friday, March 11th the RV

Club sponsored our first Chili/Salad Bar Dinner. Thanks to the generous support of our residents and others, it was a very successful evening for the club as we reached our goal for holiday decorations for 2011. Many Thanks to our RV members who put in a lot of their time and effort in making the evening a success. We want to give a special Thank You to Frosty Dawn for entertaining us with good music. Nice Job!!

PENNBROOKE SOFTBALL CLUB By Larry Cannon The Pennbrooke Softball Club is looking for volunteers to umpire Men's and Ladies' Softball Games for the 2011-2012 Sea-son. Training and supervision will be provided by the club. Please contact Larry Cannon at 748-4742, or put a note in Box P6, if interested. Pickup games will start in May at the Athletic Field. The games will start at 9AM on Tuesdays and Fridays. All residents who are interested in playing softball are encouraged to join us. The Softball Club would like to thank all the residents who came down to the athletic field during the 2010-2011 Season to support our men's and ladies' teams.

FISHING CLUB NEWS… The Fishing Club had a very successful

dinner on March 5th. We would like to thank all who attended. Tickets sold out fast. Next year we plan to have another club dinner on March 3rd with the same menu. Dinners are open to all residents and their visiting guests.

Residents are welcome to join the Fishing Club and to attend the meetings. Club meetings are held at the Activity Center, the 2nd Thursday of each month at 3:00PM.

TENNIS NEWS... The 2nd Annnual Mixed

Doubles Tennis Tournament is open to all residents and spectators on Friday, May 6th & Saturday, May 7th. For more Infor-mation, and to register, call Bob at 321-4002.

PICKLEBALL NEWS… On February 23rd the folks from Hawthorne came over to play with our Pickleball teams. We had a great time. They brought about 15-20 peo-

ple and we had about the same number of Pennbrooke people. The groups were split up.with the "A" group players playing against each other, and the "B" group playing against each other. Everyone had a chance to play, as well as socialize; & I know everyone had a great time! For those of you who couldn't make it, we hope you will get another chance some other time.

Thanks to everyone that helped set up and stayed after to put things away. It always makes setup and breakdown a lot easier when everyone pitches in. We appreciate your help!

Our news for March covered our Restaurant, The Pennbrooke Grille, and its workings. Today, let‟s explore another department — The Pro Shop.

While the Pro Shop is first and foremost the place where golfers sign in to play their round of golf, it is also the place to view and pur-chase casual sports clothing (for both men and women), accessories, and of course golf equipment.

The shop is open every day of the year (except December 25th) from 7:00AM — 5:00PM. It is open to everyone, both members and non-members alike.

And all Pennbrooke Fairways Residents get a ten percent discount on purchases (certain fair-traded and specials excluded). The clothing and accessories we sell are suitable for golfers and non-golfers alike, as it is casual attire. And the prices for all our merchandise are very

competitive! (Check us out!) When there are items we may not carry,

we do special orders where we are able. We also have gift cards for the shop, golf, or even food. Why not stop in and see what we offer? You may be pleasantly supplied! And once again, see us at: www.pennbrookefairwaysgolf.com.

Another Thank You goes to the Pennbrooke Softball League for their generous donation to our holiday deco-ration funds. Our new Pennbrooke licenses plates have also been very successful. (The feedback on the new look and color has been very positive.) The plates can still be purchased at the RSO. This month‟s club outing will be at “Wekiva Falls RV Resort” in Sorrento, from March 21st-24th.

Thanks again for all the contin-ued support. Ted Tsontos, President, RV Club

PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS 11 ACTIVITIES REVIEW — APRIL 2011

SOCIAL BRIDGE INVITATION On the first Tuesday of every month, the gals gather at the Pennbrooke Grille for lunch and then for an afternoon of SOCIAL BRIDGE. Come join us for FOOD, FUN, and a FANTASTIC afternoon. This month, contact Libbi Cozart at 435-6147, Barb Anderson at 314-9613, or just sign up in the Activity Center.

BANG A DRUM WITH THE PENNBROOKE DRUM CIRCLE

You may already know that drumming relieves stress and releases mood-elevating brain chemicals. You may even have heard that it powers up your immune system and boosts the production of cancer-killing cells. Drumming generates the slow brain waves needed to come up with clever ideas and it stimulates the entire brain, promoting communications between the neurons.

While banging on any drum — even a toy — will help, to get the most benefit, join the Pennbrooke Drum Circle.

Call Jane at 365-2426, for information on our drum circle.

Greetings to All — Hope you are all enjoying our

beautiful spring weather. Flowers are blooming, grass is growing and this is why we all live in Florida!!!

Summer is just around the corner and soon many of our residents will be leaving the commu-nity for their summer homes. Please remember to make arrangements to have your yards and homes taken care of when you are gone. Valley Crest mows, trims and edges but they do not remove weeds from your flower beds, trim shrubs, pressure wash your homes or any other lot upkeep. I know you don‟t like get-ting those “love letters” from me, any more than I like sending them, so an ounce of prevention…

The pond at the intersection of Countryside / Shadow Run is almost completed. Some of you expressed concern because of the large bare area left by the dredging. If you have been by there lately, you will notice the natural vege-tation has already started growing back. We are also go-ing to be planting decorative grasses in several areas around the pond and before you know it the pond will be beautiful. I noticed the other day we have a small alligator there and the otters are back also.

I would like to thank all of you for your cooperation and patience while getting your bar code stickers for the new gate system. If you were out of town (or otherwise unavail-able) and still need your stickers, please call the PHOA office at 360-1001 and set up a time to come to the Wel-come Center to get them. Be sure and bring your com-pleted paperwork and your driver‟s license.

Our new landscape company, Valley Crest, is now mow-ing your lawns on a weekly basis. We‟ve had a few little bumps in the road as they become familiar with our com-munity. Should you have an issue, please come to the RSO and pick up a maintenance request form, complete it, and return it to the RSO. We will see that Valley Crest sees it right away and addresses your concern / complaint quickly. There is a “learning curve” with any new land-scape company. Let‟s all practice a little extra patience, please.

Hats off to Trish for all of the fun events through the first months of 2011. The St. Patrick‟s Day celebration was a huge success. She also has the Chili Cook-Off and Trash & Treasure coming up. If you have any free time and would like to volunteer for these events, I‟m sure Trish could use the help.

And my quote for the month …

“When somebody tells you nothing is impossible, ask him to dribble a football”. ~Author Unknown.

Until next month, keep smiling,

Robbie (Roberta Dill, Property Manager)

PENNBROOKE DAY TRIPS Agenda for all trips can be printed from the Web-

site at www.pennbrooke.org under Trish’s Day Trips

Trish’s Thoughts... I would like to thank all of you who

accompanied me on the trip to Key West, and thank you all for the compli-ments and remarks you have made to your neighbors and friends. We really had a great time, and everything went smoothly and on schedule. Being my first overnight trip as your group leader taught me some very important details that I can use in making future trips even better.

I am looking into more trips and cruises these days and I am sure you know a lot more about cruising than I do. I have never actually been on a cruise myself so I am learning as I go from questions that you are asking. The agent that I am working with has promised to show me the ropes and answer all the questions you might have. Please don‟t hesitate to stop by or call. I know I was pretty busy the week of the St. Patrick‟s Day fundraiser, and I hope I did not speed by you too fast. I have slowed down somewhat now, and as always, welcome your questions and your concerns.

I have a couple of new and exciting trips planned since the last newsletter. Three days at a “DUDE RANCH” Yep! I didn‟t even know there was such a thing in Florida less than 2 hours away in Lake Wales. What fun! The trip begins in a luxury motor coach, your own private hotel quarters, dinner buffet, line dancing and music all in the first day!? Then start out Saturday with a breakfast buffet, petting barn, horseback riding, arrow shooting and MANY boutiques on the ranch. Yes! Ladies we can even shop „till we drop. Saturday night we have front row seats at the “American Championship Rodeo”, and then head on over to the Night Club and Saloon...all for the low, low price of $249. Sunday morning we will head back to Pennbrooke after enjoying a wonderful Sunday Buffet.

Many months ago a resident came to me and asked if I could plan a trip to the “Beau Rivage Casino,” and actu-ally stay in the luxurious hotel in Biloxi. I called a few bus companies and the casino and really didn‟t like the prices I was getting. But finally I have found the right company and price for such a trip and even a little better by offer-ing a day in New Orleans. So, now I can offer you a trip for four (4) days to Biloxi and New Orleans for only $222. (Plus some casino money and discounts on your food.)

If you‟ve been thinking about a trip you would like to go on, and if I can find the right company for the right price, I will do my best to make it happen.

On March 16th & 17th, a committee put together a great St. Pattie‟s Day Fundraiser. We worked long and hard to give you a couple of fun days, some great food and have some money left over for a very worthy service provided in our greatest hour of need. I am still tallying up the money and expenses to see just how much was made to donate to Lake County Cornerstone Hospice. Next month I will have a full report for you.

Until then, have a good month of April.
