HV Cable Sheath Voltage Limiters
Due to a highly non-linear and non-ohmic current-voltagecharacteristic, the sheath voltage limiters do not conduct anysignificant current during normal and fault-operatingconditions regardless of the magnitude of power frequency
induced voltages. For this application the function of surge arresters is limited
only to protect the cable anti-corrosion jacket and bondingsystem against switching and lightning surges to values
below the breakdown strength of protected elements. As a consequence all elements of the cable bonding system
must be designed to withstand the induced power frequencyvoltages, both during normal and fault operations.
In return the SVLs are designed to withstand the residualvoltage due to current surges and to have the thermalcapability to absorb and dissipate the energy of conductedsurges.

HV Cable Sheath Voltage Limiters
The use of non-combustible materials such as porcelain for postinsulators, polymer for sheath voltage limiters and non-flammableinsulating materials for all component parts incorporated in linkbox.
Suitable rated connections of very low contact resistance toeliminated hot spots and thermal sparking within the link box.
The metallic box and its sealing system are usually designed towithstand an explosive internal pressure of up to 250 kilo Pascals.
The use of high current rated Zinc-Oxide SVL arresters instead ofSilicon Carbide, spark gap or other types of arresters to satisfy themost onerous cable operating conditions.
The Zinc Oxide SVL arresters exhibit far superior electricalcharacteristics and long-term reliability
