Happy New Year . . . . and Happy New Decade! What a great time to finish a project, take a class to learn a new technique,meet new people, or just reconnect with those you know. Our 2010 programs are really exciting and a great way to start. Weare so fortunate to be able to bring you nationally renowned instructors. Check out the “Program Line Up” section of thisnewsletter for more information.
Saturday, March 6 is the date of our Winter Picnic at the Rolling Meadows Community Center. We offer classes taught bymembers, participate in charity projects, and work on UFOs. The cost for a day full of sharing knowledge, fun and food is only$5.00.
It will soon be that time again to establish our Nominating Committee which will seek out and recommend individuals to serve onour Board for 2010-2011. There are many key positions that will need to be filled, and I am hopeful that some of our newermembers will think about volunteering and step up. Our Guild is a large, diverse group connected by a passion for quilting. Ourgoal is to offer something for everyone, but it is true . . . . “It takes a village.” This is your chance to consider being part of the
village – your new beginning . . . . don't let it slip away!

We have some exciting news – the lanyards have arrived and will be available at our January meeting at the membership table. The cost will
be $3.00. The new lanyards are identical to the ones we previously had available, except they do not have the NSQG imprint, which
would have added significantly to the cost.
Currently, we have 252 members in our Guild; 24 of which are new members this year. We continue to attract a number of guests at ourmonthly meetings. Guests are always welcome to attend our meetings for a nominal fee, so feel free to invite a friend!
We want to remind you to show your membership card when you enter our meetings. We are trying to be respectful of our members whohave paid their dues, but it also gives us a chance to welcome you and to get to know our members and guests.

2010 Winter Picnic
Mark you calendar for our Winter Picnic on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Rolling Meadows Community Center from10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bring your UFOs and join us for a day filled with food, fun and laughter. Beverages will beprovided but please bring a dish to pass. Jane Underys will make an announcement at our January meeting detailing demosand classes that will take place at this event. Sign up for the picnic will begin during the break at our January meeting, atwhich time we will be accepting the $5.00 fee.
Quilts of Valor
A Quilt of Valor is a wartime quilt made and presented to a wounded serviceperson. At our Winter Picnic in March2008 a small group of volunteers came together within our Guild to make Quilts of Valor. We have grown from then toinclude not only piecers and quilters, but those who crochet QOVs, and also donate fabric and money. To date, we havesent 32 Quilts of Valor to the Evans Military Hospital in Fort Carson, Colorado. We also currently have 10 or 12 quiltsnearing completion. Our hearts are warmed by the generosity of time and materials of our Guild members. Our project is
ongoing and we will again be cutting and piecing at our Winter Picnic on March 6. If you have any questions about this effort, please contactMarcia Bowen at [email protected]

New Year’s Resolution – To Find Inner Peace
It’s time to get started on your New Year’s resolution – mine is to find inner peace. I read an article that said theway to achieve inner peace is to finish things you start so, now that the newsletter is done, I thought that mysewing room would be a good place to begin. I wasn’t there long when I got the munchies and went to thekitchen. I have already finished a bag of potato chips, a chocolate pie, a quart of ice cream, and a box of candy.I feel better already!

Wyndham Sew-In Weekends
Wyndham weekends are a little known treasure within our Guild. Three times a year, members of our Guild meet at the Wyndham GardenHotel in Buffalo Grove for a weekend of sewing, inspiration, guidance, laughing, eating and a whole lot of fun! Sleeping is optional.Wyndham weekends are an excellent place to bring along something that you are having difficulty finishing or are in need of help. “Opinions

On the Road Again
As you know by now, the 2010 AQS show in Paducah is ON and planning for our 24th annual bus trip to Paducah isunderway.
We will leave Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. from the Elk Grove VFW and return Sunday, April 25 atapproximately 4:00 p.m. In addition to the AQS Quilt Show, highlights of the trip will also include the Rotary Antique QuiltShow, AQS Museum, Hancock’s of Paducah, Patti’s, Whaler’s Catch, lots of fun, food, shopping, inspiration, camaraderie andQUILTS! The total approximate cost of the trip will be $400 which includes transportation, lodging, and continental breakfast atthe hotel. Please complete the Paducah Registration and Information Sheet, along with the Hold Harmless Release Form, and mailthem with your $50.00 non-refundable deposit.

Member Spotlight
Hedy Wessel joined NSQG in July 2009 because she thought it would be nice to belong to agroup who shared the same interests. It was not long after she joined the Guild that we learned twoof Hedy’s quilts were accepted at the quilt show in Houston! Hedy’s interest in quilting startedabout five years ago after she retired from her full-time job at the Daily Herald newspaper. Up untilthat time, her sewing skills were limited to mending and hemming. She had no idea what quiltinginvolved, but how a quilt was constructed peaked her interest. So with her new found time shedecided to take lessons at a local quilt store. After an hour of instruction she was hooked and herpassion for quilting had begun.
“Chevron Log Cabin - Bukkara Stripes” – one of her Houston entries – was a product of her secondquilting lesson. She was so fascinated at how “these silly strips could make such a nice looking item”that she was able to finish the quilt top in less than a week. However, the quilt was not completeduntil about three months later because, although she became very adept at piecing, she had no idea
how to quilt it! She asked many questions in the local quilt stores. With this knowledge, and her Singer sewing machine, she endured theheat of summer and went to work quilting this 70 x 61 work of art.
Hedy’s second quilt exhibited in Houston is an Ohio Star picture quilt containing 16 photos of hergrandson’s first five years. Aptly titled, “Grandson's First Five Years” is a 51 x 51 wall hanging.Construction of this quilt was spread over about six months but, needless to say it was a labor of lovewhich she enjoyed very much. “Printed Treasures” sheets were used to transfer the photos from hercomputer to her printer and then pieced into the center of each star.
It was just about a year ago when Hedy decided to investigate what a quilt show exhibit was allabout. She researched on the internet and found the International Quilt Festival in Rosemont and, toher surprise and dismay, she discovered how many rules and regulations there were; and besides, itwas too late to enter the Rosemont Show. The entire notion of entering a quilt in competition lost itsappeal – but not for long! She found some information about the Houston Show. What a greatplan – she could visit her daughter and her family who live in the Houston area! Hedy contacted the manager of special exhibits for theHouston Show who suggested she submit applications and pictures of her quilts and indicated there might be a possibility that one of themwould be accepted. What a thrill it was a couple of months later when Hedy was notified that both of her quilts were accepted and enteredinto the American Tradition category!
Although Hedy’s quilts did not win any awards, she was delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit them in the show and says it was anhonor and a great, unexpected, unforgettable experience. Her grandson, who is now nine years old, was in awe when he heard and saw thepeople admiring “his” quilt and taking pictures of him next to it at the show. It was equally gratifying for “Grandma”.
Hedy did have an opportunity to have both of her quilts in the International Quilt Traveling Show for three to five years, but decided to turndown the offer since they were promised to family members.
“Quilting turned out to be the perfect hobby for me”, says Hedy. She has been busy lately using her quilt-making skills to create tablerunners, placemats, pot holders, and small bags for digital devices such as cell phones and cameras. The recipients of these wonderful itemshave been relatives and friends in different states, as well as local people for whom she would custom the items based on their preferences orto complement their décor. In addition, last year she decided to participate in a Christmas craft show which proved to be a very successfulevent.
Although Hedy is not planning to enter any other quilts in show, she says she will continue to make simple things that look special and hopesto launch an internet business in the near future to market her quilted items!
