2. Valley Region
The valley region is a farming regionwith other towns that are
urban or suburban. The valley region gets their water from the
mountains far above. The capital of Ca is inside the valley region.
They also have many jobs
3. Mountain Region
The mountain region has many industries. The people use the
trees for timber to make other products. The most popular timber
tree is the Douglas fir. They also have goldmines on the west side
of the Sierra Nevada. Some people may live on the mountains.
4. Coast Region
The coast region is the most popular region in all of Ca. The
industries of the coast region are fishing and harbor building. San
Diego Bay and San Francisco Bay form excellent harbors so far.
Millions of goods are shipped in and out of these harbors.
5. Desert Region
The desert region is the least popular region in all of Ca. The
industries of the desert region are farming, mining, and also
looking for salt. The desert region is made out of minerals such as
metal, sand, gravel, and stone. These are found by mining.
6. Juan Cabrillo
Juan Cabrillo was aSpanish explorer in 1542. He sailed to Ca
because he was looking for a water way all the way through the US
to Asia. He had discovered San Diego Bay on September 8 th.
7. Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus wasthe first person to sail to America in
the 1400's. Columbus sailed across the Atlantic ocean with three
ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
8. Sir Francis Drake
Sir Francis Drake was the first pirate in the 1500's. He robbed
ships for the queen of England because England wasvery poor in
those days. He robbed all the ships that he saw in his way.
9. Sebastian Vizcaino
Sebastian Vizcainocame to California in 1602. He also made maps
of present-day Monterey Bay that year. He was a Spanish
explorer.
10. Junipero Serra
Junipero Serra was a missionary who taught Indians his
religion. Father Junipero Serra started the first mission in San
Diego in 1769.
11. Gaspar de Portola
In 1767, Spain sent a solder to run it's California colony. His
name was Gaspar de Portola. When he arrived, he led an expedition
in present-day Monterey.
12. Ranchos
A rancho is a large area of land where crops are grown and
horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs are raised. Ranchos became the
center of the area's economy.
13. Missions
Missions were set up for religious purposes. Many California
Indians worked on missions.The men farmed and cared for the animals
and the women cooked, sewed, gardened, and made candles and
soap.
14. Pueblos
Pueblos are small farming villages. The California Indians that
lived there made food for the soldiers in the presidios. The Ca
Indians earned money, land, and animals after working.
15. John Sutter
John Sutter was a pioneer. In 1841, Sutter built a fort near
the Sacramento river and the American river. It was called Sutter's
fort. He sold supplies to people who were passing through the
area.
16. Ivan Kuskov and Fort Ross
In 1812, Ivan Kuskov led a group of Russians and Alaskans to
north San Francisco. They built Fort Ross as a trading post. Then
in 1840, they had left the area.
17. Jedediah Smith
In 1826, Jedediah Smith led the first group of American
trappers. He came on land to California through th Utah and Mojave
deserts.
18. James Beckworth
James Beckworth was an African-American man. He was also a
scout, or guide, who led settlers to California during the
1850's.
19. John Bidwell
In 1841, John Bidwell led the first wagon train to California.
He and settlers came from Independence, Missouri.
20. John C. Fremont
In the early 1840's, John C. Fremont made maps of the area. He
wrote reports that made the Americans want to come to the
west.
21. 49er's
49er's came from the east to find gold in 1849. That's how they
earned their nickname, 49er's. James Marshal, a worker from
Sutter's Fort, was building a saw mill and saw gold. He told his
friend and it got to president Polk. He announced There's gold in
California!
22. Sam Brannon
Sam Brannon was an entrepreneur who bought all the mining
supplies and sold them for more. He told everyone about the gold in
Ca and made a lot of money.
23. Levi Strauss
Levi Strauss was also an entrepreneur. He saw miners need new
pants. He took the sails of ships and made pants. He also put
rivets and made pockets.
24. Biddy Mason
Biddy Mason was born into slavery. Her owner took her into ca
where slavery was not aloud. She petitioned her freedom. She also
became a nurse and owned a large land in Los Angles.
25. Mary Tape
Mary Tape was a Chinese immigrant who lived in San Francisco.
Her daughter wasn't aloud to go to school, so Tape sued Ca. Then a
new law was changed, Asian people were aloud to go to Asian
American school.
26. Mexican American War
Some American settlers in California started the Bear Flag
Revolt. This started the Mexican American War in 1846. The United
States won in 1848.
