The valley is a flat area of land. It has a lot of water and
rich soil. There is a lot of farming also.
3. Mountain Region
The mountain region is where most of the water comes from. The
Beckworth Pass is a famous pass and so is the Donner Pass.
4. Desert Region
The desert is a dry area that gets less than 15 inches of rain
a year.
5. Coast Region
The coast region has the most people. There are a lot of jobs
such as fishing. The coast is known for agriculture and
tourism.
6. James Cook
James Cook was born in 1728 at Marton, England. He spent his
free time learning math and navigation. His father was a Scottish
mingrant farm worker.
7. Juan Cabrillo
Juan Cabrillo was raised in Castile, and led the first European
expedition. He tripped over a rock and died.
8. Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus became a sailor in when he was 15 years
old. He was born in 1451.
9. Hernando Cortes
Cortes was a conquerer. He killed Montezuma and the Native
Americans.
10. Gaspar De Portola
Portola was a in the Spanish army in Italy.He also was
appointed Governor of Las Californias from 1768-1770.
11. Father Serra
Father Serra was a missionary from Spain. He left Spain in 1749
to begin his missionary work.
12. Pueblos
Pueblos are villages that farm for presidios. The soldiers'
families and settlers lived there.
13. Ranchos
Ranchos are places that Indians raise animals and grow crops.
The Indians went to the ranchos after they were free from the
missions.
14. John Sutter
John was a pioneer.In 1841 he built a fort called Sutter's
Fort.He sold supplies to people passing through.
15. Fort Ross
Fort Ross was built by the Russians and Alaskan fur trappers.It
was built to be a trading post.
