Attention is being directed in some of the principal cities of the United States to the use of bicycles and tricycles by the police, instead of horses. We find the following communication in the Washington Star: Mr. Editor: By mounting the police force on tricycles the efficiency of the service can be more than doubled with a comparatively small outlay. By this means an officer will be able to cover his beat two or three times where he cow covers it once and with considerably less fatigue. The tricycle is better suit- ed than the bicycle, as it reauires less attention on the part of the rider, and consequently would give the officer better opportunity for making close observation as he passes along the streets. An experi- mental test by the police department of a few wheels would doubtless give such satisfactory results that they would be generally adopted in a short time. It seems quite remark-abl- e that the smooth streets of this city have so long counted for noth- ing so far as the police service is concerned. The wheels would be entirely safe while officers are making arrests, as with the police department stamp upon them no thief would be bold or foolish enough to attempt to steal them. Mounted in this manner the officers would have better con- trol over the fast and reckless driv- ing that takes place in this city, so much to the injury and discomfort of pedestrians. On foot an officer has little chance of overhauling a fast driver, but mounted on a good wheel he can give chase and make arrests. The adoption of the wheel would undoubtedly lead to a more effective police service in every re- spect. Q. F. J. Heavy Machinery for Australia. The steamship Monowai had a full through freight for the Colonies. Among this freight were eight large rock and ore crushers, made by the Gates Iron Works of Chicago, four of which are designed for the Broken Hill Mines, Australia, which' are the most extensive in the world, upward of $5,000,000 being paid in dividends by these mines last year. It is claimed that more than 4,000,-00- 0 tons of ore is now in sight. The other four are for the use of the Gov- ernment of New South Wales,in pro- ducing rock ballast, etc., along the lines of railroad, which are there owned and operated by the Govern- ment. The combined capacity of the eight breakers will equal an output of 9,000 tons per day. .. Tricycles for Policemen.Attention is being directed in

some of the principal cities of theUnited States to the use of bicyclesand tricycles by the police, insteadof horses. We find the followingcommunication in the WashingtonStar:

Mr. Editor: By mounting thepolice force on tricycles the efficiencyof the service can be more thandoubled with a comparatively smalloutlay. By this means an officer willbe able to cover his beat two orthree times where he cow covers itonce and with considerably lessfatigue. The tricycle is better suit-ed than the bicycle, as it reauiresless attention on the part of therider, and consequently would givethe officer better opportunity formaking close observation as hepasses along the streets. An experi-mental test by the police departmentof a few wheels would doubtless givesuch satisfactory results that theywould be generally adopted in ashort time. It seems quite remark-abl- e

The wheels would be entirely safewhile officers are making arrests, aswith the police department stampupon them no thief would be bold orfoolish enough to attempt to stealthem. Mounted in this manner theofficers would have better con-trol over the fast and reckless driv-ing that takes place in this city, somuch to the injury and discomfortof pedestrians. On foot an officerhas little chance of overhauling afast driver, but mounted on a goodwheel he can give chase and makearrests. The adoption of the wheelwould undoubtedly lead to a moreeffective police service in every re-spect. Q. F. J.

lacine Kailway, and, in fact, nearlyevery place where windmills are used.In California, where windmills are asplentiful as dwelling houses, the ranch-men are taking out their wooden ones, even though they be in good condition, that is, not rotten, and replacing themwith Aermotore. We secured the soleagency for the latter s:yle because wewere convinced of its eueriority overany other manufactured, and becausewe were satisfied that it would bringbetter results to the purchaser. Thefirst one set up worked successfully, andthe man who bought it told his neighborabout it, so we sold another one. That'sthe way it has been ever since we intro-duced them ; now the demand for theAermotor is eo great that we have decid-ed to kep a few of them in stock. Latepurchasers have been obliged to waituntil we could have their orders filled inSan Francisco, new ones will not. Wecould publish other testimonials as tothe practicability of them on theseIslands, but we thing the following willanswer :

Honolulu, February 26, 1891.Messes. The Hawaiian Hardware Co.,

Honolulu:Gentlemen : I have had the Aer-

motor, purchased of you, placed in posi-tion on Maunaloa Ranch, and desire toexpress to you the genuine satisfaction Ifeel at the work it has done .

It runs smoothly and the wheel re-volves with the slightest wind. Onestrong point in its favor is the fact ofthere being absolutely no noise in its oper-ation, a lault so common with everyether windmill I have ever seen.

(Signed) George J. Campbell,Manager Maunaloa Ranch.

The Aermotor is the only windmillmade of steel; it cannot rot, as thewooden ones will, and it does not rust.It runs noiselessly, and its action isperfect. It is bound to give satisfaction, lhey are sold only bv us. Prices onapplication.THE HAWAIIAN HARDWARK CO ,

connection with the recent fire onNuuanu street.

An investigation will also be madeof a claim for $500 damages broughtby Fai Kee, who says that the FirePolice would not let him enterhis jewelry store on the morning ofthe fire.

A House Burned Down.Shortly before 5 o'clock Thursday

morning anotner aiarm or. nre wassounded. The residence of Mr. JohnSheldon, at Iwilei, near the Jail, caught fire and was burned to theground. The department responded, but could do nothing on account ofthe distance and a lack of water. Some valuable books were destroyed. It appears that, a boy got up andlighted the coal oil stove, and after

some water on it to beCutting went back to bed. A fewminutes later the lamp exploded, which was the cause of the fire.

San Francisco papers refer to anew enpticai carDon, recently in-vented and manufactured by theFort Wayne Company, which is saidto be superior to those in use. Itburns from 22 to 24 hours. It is oneinch thick, while the others are abouta half-inc- h, but the shadow is aboutthe same as the smaller one. Thelight is a pure white, and muchstronger. It gives great satisfactionwherever tried.

Honolulu is justly proud of themany various institutions that flour-ish in her midst; be they for educa-tional purposes, for physical devel-opment, for amusements and recrea-tions, or for whatever purposes theyare organized ; all are popular fortheir own special . advantages. Aninstitution differing somewhat fromthe above, but none the less popular;one offering greater advantages toits many members; one that is not

; confined to the city limits, but whichbpreads all over the islands; an in-stitution that, as soon as its doorswere opened, was besieged by multi-tudes anxious to join; and which isdaily growing more popular with allclasses, is the H. F. Wxchman WatchClub. The unbounded success ofthese clubs in the few months sincethey sprang into existence, has astonished even the skeptical into thebelief that there was somethingworth joining after all. Jnst theputting away of a small part ofyour spare cash, brings yon, in afew short months, something woi thhaving and having joined for. An-
