For He Is Good by Greg Laurie And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.—Colossians 3:17 In 1789, President George Washington designated the first national Thanksgiv-ing Day when he issued a proclamation for “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God.” In our day, it can be very easy during our feasting to forget about the one we are celebrating on Thanksgiving. And sometimes we forget to give thanks altogether. You may say, “Well, I don’t have a lot to give thanks for. I am just not feeling thankful this year.” Maybe you are having financial troubles or health problems or there is conflict in your family. But maybe we need to get things into perspective. The primary reason we were put on this earth as human beings was to glorify God and to give Him thanks. The Bible tells us this again and again. Psalm 107:1 says, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Hebrews 13:15 says, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacri-fice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” Yes, praise and worship can sometimes be a sacrifice because we don’t want to do it. And that might be because we are depressed or down or things aren’t going that well. It may be that hardship or tragedy has befallen us, and we don’t feel like praising God. But the Bible does not say give thanks to the Lord because you feel good. Rather, it says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!” We need to put things into perspective.

Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It: Read a book everybody, read a book. (Repeat) If you’re lonely or you’re blue, Books will help to see you through, Read a book everybody, read a book. 2nd Verse: Be a listener everybody, be a lis-tener. (Repeat) Read a book of deepest learning, It will help your inward yearn-ing, Read a book everybody, read a book. Wislawa Szymborska: I’m old-fashioned and think that reading books is the most glorious pastime that humankind has yet devised.

“Treasured Grace,” by Tracie Peterson, is historical fiction about Grace Mar-tindale who is raising her two younger sisters after their parents died. A hasty decision to head west seemed like an opportunity for a fresh start but instead left them in a precarious position. Dr. Whitman and wife agree to let the sisters stay at their mission for the winter but a measles outbreak threatens the lives

at the mission and the native Indians who live nearby. Grace finds herself and those she loves in more danger than she imagined possible. Thank you, my Texas book friend. “My Father’s World,” by Michael Phillips & Judith Pella, is a similar fiction story about 15-year-old Corrie Belle Hollister who is the only one left to bring her two brothers and two sisters into a raucous mining camp during the California Gold Rush to find their Uncle Nick. When the little troop arrives in Miracle Springs they discover Uncle Nick has skipped town with the sheriff close behind, and their “land of promise” turns into one of fear and unknown danger. Can they make it on their own? Corrie will try. I knew Franklin Graham had been a problem kid with his well-known parents and unique set of prob-lems. Then I read his autobiography, “Rebel Without A Cause.” It is fascinating as he reveals those earli-er years and his development, and, finally, he is comfortable being Franklin. He says: I was about to learn something that still breaks my heart, but it’s true: Christians can viciously kick, claw, and spit on each other with the best of them. And Satan laughs the whole time. The primary goal of Samaritan’s Purse, Franklin’s organization, is sharing the gospel. He writes: Some people are a bit surprised to learn that this is our main focus, but it’s true: We are not just a Christian relief organization. We are an evangelistic organization that takes to the ditches and gutters of the world to reach out to those in need. I personally believe that when we respond as Christians to wars, famines, natural disasters, and other tragedies with food, medicine, and clothing, we earn a hear-ing for Christ. When people are down and out--whatever their circumstances--and we stop and help, they will listen to what we have to say. We have earned their respect. I want to take advantage of such opportunities to do everything I can to clearly, convincingly present Jesus Christ and His claims. Billy and Ruth Graham have added their nickel’s worth at the end of the book. E.E. Cummings: It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. Author Unknown: Why not learn to enjoy the little things, there are so many of them. Eleanor Roosevelt: The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Albert Camus: In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. To err is human--and sometimes it’s the best thing that could happen to you. “God Loves The Dandelions,” by Roger Fredrikson, is an older book with a copyright date of 1975. The author became pastor of the First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1959 and after fifteen years, wrote a revealing story of their adventures. He humbly admits that he had to be reminded that “the real people of God are the lay people.” The church expanded with study groups, then widened its horizons to the Firehouse which included drug-drenched youth, and the Glory House which drew in the ex-convict, and a host of other “dandelions.” Frederickson learned, painfully, that “being a big man for God” was not his job. When a pastor is “a stimulator and an enabler, not an answer man,” he finds that “ordinary people will begin doing extraordinary things because the Spirit is among them.” May our Lord go with you, may He go behind you to encourage you, beside you to befriend you, above you to watch over you, beneath you to lift you from your sorrows, within you, to give you the gifts of faith, hope, and love. Amen. ~Ferne Liebsch
