3. Relevance

Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in South East Asia and has been severely affected by war and over 30 years of political instability. However the last decade has seen strong economic growth. In 2011, inflation is stable and areas such as agriculture, garment exports, tourism, construction and banking are driving economic growth (‘World Bank Cambodia: Recent Economic Developments,’ Feb 2011). Global activity is estimated to expand by 4.4% in 2011 and GDP growth is estimated to increase triggered by exports, tour-ism, agriculture and banking and construction (public and private). The country is experiencing increasing amounts of foreign investment and as such increasing exposure to foreign products and services.

Many new garment factories and footwear firms opened in Cambodia in 2010 and 2011, following closures in 2009 due to the crisis. However while many products are made in the country, the designs and factories are almost exclusively foreign owned and the products destined for foreign export. Moreover the real wage of garment workers, unlike wages in some other sectors, hasn’t improved much relative to the last decade of strong economic growth.

Development in the capital city of Phnom Penh is happening rapidly in telecommunications and construction and the capital is experiencing ever growing numbers of new café’s, restaurants, high-end food and alcohol retailers, fashion retailers and boutiques opening up.

Strong economic growth and increasing foreign investment have influenced the fashion industry in Cambodia in the last decade along with other luxury items. The country has seen increasing access to foreign, largely Asian products, but also the emergence of Cambodian designers. The fashion industry is growing, with increasing numbers of local designers opening boutiques, fashion degrees now being offered in two of the country’s leading universities and a growing market among urban Khmer’s who have increasing amounts of disposable income.

With 5% of the employed population working in the garment industry and garment exports being one of the main triggers of economic growth, Cambodia has every reason to support the development of its own fash-ion industry.

Thus the time is right for Cambodia to have its first ‘Fashion Week,’ to showcase the established and emerg-ing local talent at a fashion exhibition and during extravagant runway shows.

4. Event Overview

CFW 2011 comprises a series of events designed to cater to a range of stakeholders nationally and interna-tionally. Primarily the event seeks to support Cambodia’s established and emerging designers and provide an accessible route of entry into what’s happening in the fashion industry in Cambodia for a section of the general public. The event also seeks to collaborate with businesses operating within Cambodia to whom it can offer increased brand awareness and recognition nationally and internationally. CFW 2011 will attract national and international media, providing coverage for national designers. Additionally, businesses operating within Cambodia will benefit from increased brand awareness and recognition. CFW 2011 will achieve this through a schedule of events geared to different audiences:

The ticket price is being kept relatively low in order to ensure that many urban middle and upper class Khmer’s can attend, ticket price includes additional benefits such as exclusive discounts of exhibiting retailers, access to fashion shows running during the exhibition, canapés and champagne. 6. Approach

Forming associations and alliancesA key approach of the event includes forming partnerships and alliances with the key organisations involved in the areas of fashion and business in Cambodia. The event does not seek to duplicate functions but rather to ensure that the organisations already established gain from the event in terms of exposure to international media and access to business to business opportunities. For example designers will gain access to con-sumers and investors through the two day fashion exhibition and sponsors of CFW will benefit from high brand exposure at CFW events.

Partnership and NetworkingTo maximize event success and sustainability, and ensure experience exchange throughout event implemen-tation, partnership will be sought with a wide range of organisations and other stakeholders to participate in various aspects of the event. Partnership minimizes risks of duplication and misuse of resources and will contribute to the event sustainability by involving local organisations.
