We are committed to providing first class leisure and sporting facilities to
local residents and as such are investing millions into the leisure facilities at
Parkside and Abbey Pools Daryl Emes, GLL
Parkside & Abbey ComplexesParkside Pools and Gym, just a stone’s throw from Cambridge city centre, and Abbey Leisure Complex to the east of Cambridge provide leisure facilities to the whole of the city. Both sites have been managed since October 2013 by leisure trust GLL.
Sarah Brown, Executive Councillor for Community Well being at Cambridge City Council said: “We are excited to have worked with GLL to update and modernise the facilities at Parkside Pool and Abbey Leisure Complex....”
Design Development/FeaturesWork completed on the redevelopments in April 2014 with a substatial £3m investment to improve the facilities at both sites.
At Abbey Pools, a three-phase overhaul saw the gym expanded to cater for 60 exercise stations, as well as a new group exercise studio and a dedicated group cycle studio. New air conditioning was also installed. The dry side changing rooms and poolside sauna were all refurbished and a GP referral office created.
At Parkside Pools, which has three pools, two flume rides, an exercise studio, cafe, children’s activity room and conference room, the project saw a fitness suite created for the local community. The investment created a 423 sq m, 95-station fitness suite, dedicated male and female fitness changing, a 120 sq m 20-person studio and a GP referral area.

The project was technically and structurally complicated as we knocked lots of small spaces into one big area, but Parkside Pools is an iconic building in the centre of
Cambridge, well known by local residents, and the new and upgraded services have massively enhanced the leisure facilities on offer to the community.
Ian Cotgrave, Managing Director for Createability
Createability took out and reconfigured the first floor of the existing sauna and steam suite, changing rooms and offices. The offices have been relocated to a redundant area alongside the swimming pool.
Sarah Brown, Executive Councillor for Community Well being at Cambridge City Council said: “We are excited to have worked with GLL to update and modernise the facilities at Parkside Pool and Abbey Leisure Complex. This work has delivered superb, state of the art facilities for the whole community, and will help us help those members of our community who find themselves excluded from traditional fitness facilities.”
Daryl Emes, GLL Partnership Manager for Cambridge agrees. He said: “We are committed to providing first class leisure and sporting facilities to local residents and as such are investing millions into the leisure facilities at Parkside and Abbey Pools.”
