MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL The delivery of our grand piano this week has

been a wonderful way to end a very successful

Term 1 here at Cammeraygal. Our first opportunity

to showcase the grand piano for all students will be

at our Anzac Day ceremony which will be our first

on site whole school assembly since the start of

COVID, restrictions permitting, in Wk 1 of Tm 2.

Student Safety in the Community

We have been advised that there have been

several cases in our region lately of students being

approached by strangers while walking to and from

school and in some cases of those strangers trying

to persuade students to get into vehicles. With the

holidays upon us please continue to regularly

speak with your children about the importance of

being aware of their surroundings (and not

immersed in their phones!) while out and about

and of seeking help from local businesses and

residents if they feel threatened.

Cammeraygal Represented at the Australian National Rowing Championships

Lili H (Y12 )again demonstrated her outstanding

rowing prowess at the Australian National Rowing

Championships in Tasmanian this past weekend,

competing in the finals of the Schoolgirl Single

Scull for Cammeraygal and placing 5th overall. This

is an extraordinary achievement and is a testament

to Lili’s focus, determination and grit. We are very

proud to have Lili represent our school at this

prestigious competition.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED… Music Performances

Last week on the Pacific Highway Campus we were treated to some amazing performances from our

CAPA ensembles and elective classes during recess concerts in the Drama studio.

Our CAPA Faculty has been hard at work getting the ensembles ‘performance ready’ again after the

disruptions of COVID in 2020, and they have clearly been very successful! Both performances saw

packed houses of students wanting to support their peers.

The level of performance for this early in the year was wonderful – a huge thank you to the CAPA faculty

for their enthusiasm and dedication!

Holiday Wishes

I would like to wish all members of our community a very happy and safe (and, for Y12, productive!)

holiday break. It has been lovely to get to know all of the students on both campuses this term, and this

experience has reaffirmed for me yet again what a fantastic school community we have here at

Cammeraygal.

Thank you to all of our hard-working teaching and administration staff for their tireless efforts this term,

and in particular to Mr Barraclough, Ms King and Dr Mirto for their support. We are all looking forward to

welcoming Ms Melky back from her leave next term rested and refreshed.

Canteen Purchasing

Students are regularly reminded that mobile phones cannot be used throughout the school day. This

extends to purchasing items from both canteens. If your child wishes to make purchases from the

canteen, please ensure that they have either cash or a debit card to make the transaction.

Extra-Curricular Activities

It has been wonderful to see so many extra-curricular activities returning this term with the easing of

restrictions. In particular, the past few weeks have been full of opportunities for students to engage in

knock out sports, music and drama performances, wellbeing incursions, public speaking competitions,

CAT competitions and more!

We are pleased to announce that the Environment Committee, led by Mr Foster, will be installing special recycling bins outside the canteens, commencing Term 2. The contents will be collected periodically by CitizenBlue to be recycled, and we will be paid for the privilege!

All funds will go to the P&C to help support future environment projects. Thanks in advance to Mr Foster and the Environment Committee for their work in educating the student body about the program and also sorting the recycling for collection.

Faculty News LOTE What a day! All of Y8 and Y9 Japanese classes participated in an eventful morning of learning about the

wonders of Japan through games hosted by Mama Dojo. Games Boy JP was a theatre presentation that

sees students experience Japan’s language through playground games in the style of Undoukai (sports

day) to teach them about the lively modern culture.

Students were jumping up and about trying to win in the classic game of Jan Ken Pon using their feet

and had wild guesses at where the Okashi was. There were some Kawaii (cute) as well as Kowai (scary)

poses out there! Y9 had the chance to be involved in an extra language intensive workshop – they

practised their Shinobi skills, chopping each other’s Ude (arm) and Ashi (Feet) off in fits of laughter.

Zhuo Sensei was amazed at the level of evasion and fitness shown by our students, very ninja indeed.

What was even more surprising was the intelligence that some of our students shown in the game of

Fukuro-Toru, a strategic game of stealing the red bag back to your team base without getting tagged.

All in all, it was a very Tanoshii (fun) morning.

MATHEMATICS Some information for Year 7 parents about Task 1

Students in Year 7 recently completed their first mathematics test at Cammeraygal High School. This

task is designed to formally evaluate a student’s skill working with negative number operations and their

understanding of the early stages of formal geometric reasoning. Completing the first task at the end of

Term 1 marks an important milestone in the development of what we like to call “The Four

Foundations”: negative numbers, fractions, algebra and equations.

Mastery of the Four Foundations is the gateway to high school mathematics, which is why we put so

much emphasis during Year 7 on developing them. Our goal is for all Year 7 students to gain mastery of

the Four Foundations. Students who are yet to fully master negative number operations will be

supported throughout Term 2, and Term 3, and even through to Term 4 to keep working with negative

numbers until they do reach mastery. Students who did not reach ‘C’ grade level on negative numbers

this term will be invited to the morning workshop (see below).

At this time, it is also worth highlighting that if a student gains a ‘C’ grade outcome, this means they are

making solid progress. The formal definition given to schools for a ‘C’ grade is:

The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved

an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.

Based on past experience, we are confident that if a Year 7 student is at ‘C’ level for negative numbers

in Term 1, they will likely reach a ‘B’ or ‘A’ level for negative numbers by the end of the year if they keep

focused in class and do assigned homework.

We will be reviewing and extending negative number work in the coming months, and students will have

another opportunity to be formally assessed on negative number skills in the next task at the end of

Term 2.

Maths Support Workshops for Term 2

In Term 2 we will be providing targeted support for specific groups of students:

Year 7 students yet to reach the ‘C’ grade level for negative number operations, as seen in their

result from Task 1, are invited to the Tuesday morning workshop with Mr Zuber on the Pacific

campus 8:15am – 8:45am.

Year 10 Maths 5.3 students who need review of algebra, as seen in their results from Task 1, as

invited to the Tuesday afternoon workshop with Mr Yang on the West St campus

3:20pm – 4:00pm.

Year 11 Maths Advanced students who need review of the Term 1 content, as seen in their results

from Task 1, are invited to a new Tuesday morning workshop with Mr Hwang on the West St

campus 8:15am – 8:45am.

Students who have subscribed to this service should have received user accounts and passwords

from their maths teacher.

The Maths Challenge

Students are now working on the last set of problems, due Friday 30 April. Please see the cover

of the workbook given to students for more details on submission. A reminder that students may

work with a partner, so long as they write their own solutions.

Students doing the Junior Challenge (Years 7 & 8) can come to the Maths Club on Monday after

CAPA Cammeraygal’s Grand Piano

Cammeraygal High School is now the proud owner of a Yamaha C7A Grand Piano. Thank you to our

Principal Ms Melky, Deputy Ms Arrow and the P&C for supporting this purchase. The school now has a

professional standard grand piano that will be used for HSC and class performances, school concerts

and assemblies for decades to come. We are all looking forward to hearing the piano at our Anzac

We know the audience thoroughly enjoyed eating their recess in the Pacific Theatre while enjoying the

Y12 Visual Arts Excursion

To help inspire them with their Body of Work, Year 12 Visual Arts attended ARTEXPRESS at the NSW

Art Gallery. The exhibition is one of the most dynamic and popular at the Gallery.

ARTEXPRESS 2021 features a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the art-

making component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts in 2020 – a challenging year – and provides

insight into students’ creativity and the issues important to them.

The exhibition encompasses a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics,

collection of works, documented forms, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking,

sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms. These elegant and highly resolved bodies of work

demonstrate a creativity, resilience and sustained investigation of the very complex world and times in

which we live.

SCIENCE Physics and the 24/7 Club

The Science Faculty have held weekly workshops before and after school every Monday and Tuesday to

help Y11 and Y12 students in the areas of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students who attend these

workshops enjoyed getting the one-on-one feedback with teachers and used these opportunities to

clarify concepts they were unsure about.

These tasks are based off the module that the students are learning to allow them to obtain immediate

feedback on their understanding of the course. For example in Physics, students are learning Nature of

Light in Year 12 and Dynamics in Year 11. Students are also expected to do some peer marking using

a marking criterion with assistance from the teacher. This is to ensure students become familiar with how

marks are accolated in the HSC Physics and provide them an opportunity to understand HSC style

questions from the perspective of a marker.

Year 12 Physics – Building DC Motors

Our Y12 Physics cohort have finished building their own DC motors as a part of their depth study

assessment task. Over the last four weeks, each student has been applying their knowledge of

electromagnetism to create a functional motor. Here are some photos of the construction process and

A RECAP OF TERM 1 IN TAS 2021 has started very well for the TAS Faculty, with the full lot of our rotations being offered to our

Years 7 and 8 students. Everyone has settled well into the year and have begun to create some

spectacle work, as well as enjoying themselves and learning new things. To finish off Term 1, we would

like to take this opportunity to show some of the great work that has been done in some of our

Technology Mandatory classes and tell you about the excursion that our Year 11 Industrial Technology -

Timber students recently participated in.

Year 7 Technology Mandatory – Food Technology and Agriculture

Year 7 Technology have been learning about Food Technology with a focus on Agriculture. Part of this

process included students researching and designing their own self-watering planters, from recycled

items. The students were encouraged to select a herb or vegetable in which they could recycle or

purchase the seeds, appropriate to the season and plant them.

Year 8 Technology Mandatory – Digital Technologies App Development

Y8 Technology have been learning about Digital Technologies, including designing and building their

own Apps!

Part of this process included students designing the Graphical User Interface as a Wireframe and

building a visual prototype. Through this process students learned about user interface design utilising

consistency in design, well- considered layout and colour choices for their visual design to be visually

appealing, user friendly, ergonomic and inclusive. Students have been turning these visual designs into

Year 8 Technology Mandatory – Material Technologies Textiles

Y8 Technology have been learning about Material Technologies with a focus on textiles and

sustainability. Part of this process included students designing and making their own canvas tote bags.

Through this process students learned about a variety of textiles embellishment techniques, including

hand embroidery, tie-dye and applique.

Industrial Technology Timber - Excursion

As part of their course, the students have begun to learn and understand how the timber furniture sector

operates. To draw a connection between the theoretical and practical aspects the students participated

in an excursion, which involved them travelling out to Marrickville to visit the TimberMill, and participating

in a Zoom Conference call with Bryan Cush of Sawdust Bureau.

Throughout the day the students were taken on a tour of the facilities and discussed the making of past

and current pieces of work. The students were able to see how each business runs and relate their

construction process to that of industry.

The group also had the opportunity to ask questions about each of the businesses and learnt a great

deal from the day. On the behalf of the class I would like to thank Tom and Sally from TimberMill and

Bryan from Sawdust Bureau for giving up their time to talk to our students.

STUDY SKILLS FOR APRIL LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT TERM Are you riding a rollercoaster at school? Rollercoaster study is where you stay up late doing last minute

assignments, then you take it easy for a while and do very little, then panic again when something is due

and have to spend huge amounts of time at the end completing the work. If you plan ahead and are

prepared, you will find school much less stressful and more rewarding. Here are the top tips for thinking ahead:

1. STUDY NOTES: If you know that you have a test at the end of each topic or examinations

approaching, then on the nights you do not have much homework start working on your study

notes and summaries. File them in folders at home so they are ready to go when you need them.

2. ASSIGNMENTS: Always start the assignment the day it is given to you, even if it is just a little bit.

Make sure you understand the requirements and if you don’t ask your teacher straight away the

next day. Brainstorm the steps the first night and do a rough plan of when you will do each step.

3. ASK FOR HELP EARLY: There is nothing more frustrating than a student who says ‘I haven’t

understood anything we did in the last 3 weeks’. Ask for help as soon as you have a problem.

Keep a list of questions for your teacher on a post-it in your textbook or sticky notes on your

computer or a list in your phone. Don’t let problems or issues build up, ask for help early and often.

4. THINK ABOUT WHO YOU SIT NEXT TO: Choose wisely who you will sit with in class. This can

make a world of difference to your results. If you sit with someone where it is a productive

relationship, you encourage and help each other and stay on task in the classroom you will

understand your work better and have less to do at home.

5. CONSIDER YOUR WEEK: Plan ahead for busy times. If you know you have nights where you

can’t do much work or a busy weekend, plan ahead and get things done early. Always look ahead

for possible times where you could be caught short of time and make plans to avoid problems.

Welbeing @ CHS SCHOOLTV SPECIAL REPORT Vaping & E-Cigarettes Vaping is becoming a trendy pastime that is growing in popularity across Australia, especially amongst

teenagers. It is the act of inhaling a vapour created by an electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette.

Many teenagers are succumbing to peer pressure around this risk-taking activity due to the ease of

accessing and hiding vapes. They are often cheaper than conventional cigarettes, making it more cost-

effective and attractive to young people.

Although under 18’s are not legally allowed to purchase any type of e-cigarette or vaping product in

Australia, teenagers are finding ways to access them online. Australia has strict regulations in place for

nicotine-containing products, and attempts are being made to regulate vaping and ban the importation of

them.

Many of the flavoured liquids associated with vaping, contain not only high levels of nicotine, but other

potentially harmful additives. Many of these “e-liquids” contain chemicals that are likely to be toxic, that

when inhaled or vaped repeatedly, can cause severe damage to the lungs.

Vaping is often marketed as being the “healthy” alternative to smoking. However, doctors strongly advise

that if you do not smoke, then you should not start vaping. Most teenagers are unaware of the

associated risks and potential impact vaping can have on their development and overall health.

Parents are encouraged to discuss the dangers of nicotine addiction and include e-cigarettes in the

discussion alongside alcohol and drugs.

came along. We made $917.35 for the P&C.

Many thanks to Debbie, Gina and all the office staff who collected the donations at the school. Thank

you also to the wonderful parents Saya, Sarasa, Tomoko, Jennifer, Kalyanee and Irwin for the smooth

running of the sales.

When the next sale will be held depends purely on the donations we receive. We have completely

depleted all girls skirts and shirts, boys shorts, sport uniforms, jackets and jumpers.

SPORT Due to the success of the Sports Fitness Program offered in Term 1, and the numerous requests for the

program to continue in Term 2, we are happy to continue to offer the program once a week on a Friday

morning for Term 2 at Junior Campus.

Participants in the program showed measurable improvement in their fitness, agility, and strength. The
