WHAT ISSUMMER CAMP

Summer camp is a major American tradition! Beginning over 125 years ago, the US is now home to over 10,000 summer

camps, each and every one unique. With over 10 million children going to summer camp each year, the need for staff

to run the camps is huge and that's where YOU come in! Camp Directors (the people who own/run the camps) like to hire international staff to bring culture and diversity to their camp, whilst providing a broad skill-set for their campers.

There are camps in EVERY State in America - so you have the opportunity to work anywhere from the deep south to the far reaches of the Alaskan wilderness! These camps range in size from those with a handful of staff, to those housing hundreds of staff and campers!

For the children of America, summer turns out to be the most highly anticipated time of year as they wait for the first day of camp to arrive. Camp not only provides an exciting, action packed environment but allows the kids to develop their life skills, gaining independence and meeting friends from around the world. Your role as a camp counselor is to foster the development of the children you work with, leading them in the activities you’re passionate about and encouraging them to grow into young adults.

Camp needs staff with a wide range of skills, who are passionate about working abroad in an environment which can sometimes be challenging but overall will be very rewarding. You don’t necessarily need a qualification in your chosen skill but it does help! We always look for people who are outgoing, enthusiastic and of course, passionate about working with children!

While we are after multi-skilled applicants, there are some skills which are considered to be in high-demand. These are skills which year-after-year, camp directors are always looking for. If you are qualified in at least one of these areas, then the great news is that you will receive increased pocket-money whilst at camp!

BE ACABIN COUNSELORCabin Counselors have the ability to lead one particular activity area and as a great all-rounder, are able to assist in a range of activities at camp. The focus of their role will be on leading an individual activity though they will also split their time with supervising a group of campers as they go from one activity to another.

BE ASPECIALIST COUNSELORIf you’re really passionate about a particular sport or activity and have a qualification or lots of experience in one of our high-demand areas, you can take on the role of a Specialist Counselor. As a Specialist, you will focus the majority of your time on one particular activity although you will be expected to get involved in other activities as required.

BE ASUPPORTSTAFFThe extensive team of Support Staff based at every camp are vital for the smooth day to day running of camp life. If you have experience in maintenance, office-work, kitchen-work or housekeeping and would prefer not to be directly involved with the children, then this behind the scenes role at camp is perfect for you. Support Staff receive more pocket-money and have extra-free time whilst at camp. To be part of the Support Staff team, you need to be a full-time student in continuing education so that travelling to camp acts as your summer break between academic years.

As cliché as it sounds, summer camp will be a life-changing experience that you’ll want to be part of again and again. From the second you arrive, you know you’re in a place like no other, somewhere far, far from a ‘normal’ summer back home (unless you happen to have a few hundred children running around your house every day!).

Camp Leaders participant Kim Baker from Kent, UK spent 6 years working at Camp North Star, Maine. We asked Kim how her time at camp influenced her confidence and future career pathway:

“Believe it or not before I went, I was really shy. I was in awe of everything when I arrived and just walked around with a huge smile on my face, which gained me the nickname ‘Smiler’. The more I became involved, the more I discovered my voice and became confident in expressing it. I guess that was the turning point – it was like a personality change. When I returned to the U.K., I had the confidence to take on a demanding role for a well-known television network in postproduction.”

Page 17: Camp Leaders Brochure 2015

17

Kim’s time at summer camp aligns perfectly with the Smaller Earth mission of positively impacting 20 million people by the year 2020. During all of Kim’s trips to the States and also a later Smaller Earth trip Down Under, Kim believes she has impacted a whopping 3000 people. This gets us well on our way to our 20 million target (thanks Kim)!

“Then there are the people I’ve met on my Smaller Earth experiences that have positively impacted my life. My first camp director for instance is an inspiration. His enthusiasm is infectious, whilst his attitude and life experiences really helped me put things into perspective and made me reflect upon and reach my own potential. He’s also helped me realise what I really want out of life, which has enabled me to make some pivotal decisions.”

Camp Leaders work with over 800 camps in America. Over the years we have built a great relationship with the camps we provide staff for to ensure we are able to provide you with the placement that best suits you as an individu-al. There are a variety of different camps in the US so we’ve given you a few examples of the different types so that you can get an idea of what each are like...

Agency CampCamps run by agencies such as the YMCA, 4-H clubs, Campfire Boys & Girls, etc. follow the traditions of the agency with which they are affiliated and are operated by a board of directors rather than an individual owner.

Family CampAn opportunity for the whole family to join in the experience of camp together, family camps will run in the same manner as other residential camps with the exception that counselors aren’t required to live in a bunk with the children as their parents are there to look after them. You’ll be responsible for leading activities for both children and adults.

Private/Independent CampPrivately owned and operated, these camps are often separated into all-boys or all-girls camps with a few remaining as co-ed camps. Many families have been sending their children to the same private camp for generations, so traditions are strongly rooted in the camper and staff community.

Day CampOperated by private owners or an agency, day camps run only day time sessions, as the name suggests! Children arrive early in the morning and participate in a full day of activities before returning home to their families at the end of the day. This means that counselors don’t live in a bunk with the kids and may stay with a host family. Day camps are often located closer to towns/cities than residential camps and campers may come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

Special Needs CampProviding an opportunity for those with special needs to experience camp life, these camps can be a real challenge but are often seen as providing the greatest reward for the staff that work there. Campers will have a variety of special needs, including (but not limited to): Mental and/or Physical Disabilities, Blindness, Deafness, Learning Disabilities, ADHD/ADD. Campers may range in age from young children to adults.

Faith Based CampMainly representing Jewish or Christian faiths, this type of camp offers campers an opportunity to attend traditional summer camp whilst developing and celebrating their religious beliefs at the same time. The level of religious awareness, as well as the level of religious involvement, required from camp staff varies depending on the camp. Some camps focus more heavily on religion and religious studies, while others incorporate religious and moral beliefs into daily camp activities in a more subtle manner.

Underprivileged CampThis type of camp accommodates children from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Many campers may be attending camp on a scholarship if their families cannot afford the fees of camp. Underprivileged camps are usually run by an organization or foundation which relies on charitable donations and grants to operate camp.

Whether it is due to the breath-taking scenery of the National Parks, the massive skyscrapers of New York City, the bright lights of Las Vegas or simply the fact that you can’t walk more than 10 yards without tripping over a food outlet of some fashion, the US has it all!

With so much of our modern culture influenced by the USA, travelling your way around it makes it easy to see why people hold such a fascination with this great country.

New YorkThere aren’t many people interested in travelling that haven’t included the famous ‘Big Apple’ on their bucket list of places to see. Take in the sights of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park, but also make sure you absorb the melting pot of cultures this fast paced city has to offer as you step into the parallel worlds of China Town and Little Italy. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more passionate sports fan than a New Yorker attending one of their plethora of stadiums, from baseball at the jaw-droppingly large Yankee stadium, to the celebrity studded audience of the basketball in Madison Square Garden. Trends in New York change faster than Usain Bolt running the 100m, so make sure you gorge yourself on a city with it’s finger firmly on the pulse.

AMERICAIt’s difficult to find another country in the world that can amaze you in so many different ways!

Page 23: Camp Leaders Brochure 2015

23

Step outside the gridiron streets of New York and you’ll find that the rest of the state has endless treasures to pique your interest. To put it into perspective, the distance from New York City to the state’s border with Canada is the same as travelling from London to Gretna on the Scottish border! From the thrill of parasailing above Lake George to riding by horse across Long Island’s beautiful beaches, you’re going to find experiences you never knew existed.

Only in New York State can you take in the ‘Grand Canyon of the East’ in Letchworth State Park from a hot-air balloon, experience the exhilaration of white water rafting in the Adirondacks, or adorn yourself in a blue plastic poncho to take in the magnificence of Niagara Falls aboard the ‘Maid of the Mist’.

Page 24: Camp Leaders Brochure 2015

24

New OrleansIn stark contrast to the fast-paced feel of New York, the capital of the deep south provides a mellow and laid-back atmosphere in which to check out the city they call the ‘Big Easy’. Famed for it’s outlandish culture, the city thrives on music and seafood, both of which you’re going to find in abundance as you meander along the streets. Credited with being the home of jazz music, the city offers endless street festivals celebrating the native sound alongside those offering a new experience as you listen to the distinctive sounds of local Creole music, affectionately known as ‘swamp pop’. Heading into the ‘French Quarter’ will give you an idea of the European roots that the city was built on, with picturesque buildings to take in and countless museums, art galleries and restaurants to fill the soul and stomach alike!

Make sure you head to the Confederate Museum for a refreshingly honest take on the great American civil war and also take the time to see the distinctive Louisana Superdome stadium. Nestled amongst the skyscrapers of the business district, the ‘UFO’ shaped home of the New Orleans saints is a spectacle of modern engineering. Wherever you go, the friendly nature of the local ’N’Orleans’ residents is well known so make sure you leave yourself extra time when you’re getting around to allow for conversations with total strangers!

Page 25: Camp Leaders Brochure 2015

Most Europeans can’t help but feel a little more at home when they visit San Francisco, due in large part to the liberal and cosmopolitan attitude adopted by the residents of the ‘city by the bay’. And what a bay it is! If the Golden Gate Bridge doesn’t wow you the first time around, then wait until you are on the boat to Alcatraz and catch it again from a better angle. The Humber Bridge may be longer, but red trumps grey in our book! If you do decide to visit the world’s most famous prison, make sure you try and take the night tour – the darkness really adds to the atmosphere.

If prisons aren’t your thing, you can always take in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, watch the antics of the Sea Lions down at Fisherman’s Wharf

(hint – try to breathe through your mouth) or take a ride on one the famous Street Trolleys as it navigates the ups and downs of the San Fran streets. Of course, you can eat any kind of cuisine in the Golden city thanks to its rich international population. That being said, you can’t visit California without trying Clam Chowder served in a Sourdough Bread Bowl – full bellies guaranteed!

Whatever you love, you’ll find it ‘the City’ – from Laundrettes that double as Open Mic Bars (yes, really!) to museums full of creepy mechanical arcade games, they really do have it all. Just remember, only tourists call it ‘Frisco’.
