Probe into ‘rip off’ costs ofuel is givenMPs’ backinM ORE t han 30 M Ps arebacking a campaign for thecompetition watchdog to

fully investigate vehicle fuelpricing amid growing an-ger around the “rip-off”costof diesel.

FairFuelUK said 32 MPsfrom across all parties hadpledged their support thisweek to its campaign forthe Competition and Mar-kets Authority (CMA) tolook at retail price changes

in relation to oil cost fluc-tuations, commodity specu-lation, wholesale prices anddistribution costs “to stopfurther blatant, opportunis-tic and unfair profiteeringtaking place at the pumps”.

RAC Fuel Watch data showsthe wholesale price of dieselhasnowfallen6p a litrelowerthan petrol, meaning there isscope for at least another 3pa litre cut, the organisation

claims.RAC fuel spokesman Si-mon Williams said a funda-mental change in the fuelmarket was taking placeas a result of Saudi Arabiaopening two new refiner-ies last year geared to the

production of refined oilproducts, including diesel.

Mr Williams said: “Saudi

Arabia had concentrated onexporting crude, leaving re-fining to other countries, butgreater Europeandemand fordiesel has led the kingdom

to increase its refining ca-pacity.

“We expect this increase indiesel production to have along-term positive effect onpump prices.

“If retailers operate trans-parently we will see reduc-tions in the wholesale price

of diesel passedforecourt.

“This should mwill soon be sold price as petrol, as it is in othearound Europe.”

Drivers warned overhayfevermedicationHAYFEVER suf ferers couldbe endangering themselvesand other road users if they drive after taking al-lergy medication, it is beingclaimed, and more than a

fifth have let side effectscause an accident.

Research from Kwik Fitsuggests that 26 per cent of all UK adults will take hayfe-verrelief medicine thissum-mer, and of those drivers 49

per cent say they frequentlyfeel drowsy afterwards.A further 18 per cent said

they feel that their think-ing is impaired, 13 per centclaim to experience dizzi-ness and 11 per cent evencite blurred vision as a side-effect of their hayfever con-trol regime.

But 49 per cent of those

taking medication make noreduction in the amount of driving they do, and a shock-ing 22 per cent have experi-enced symptoms while driv-ing that have led directly toan accident.

Jason Banwell, managingdirector at Kwik Fit Insur-ance Service said: “Thesefindings are worrying as weenter the summer monthsand it seems that some driv-

ers still do not recognise thedangers of driving whilstfeeling the side effects of common, over the countermedication.

“As with all medication itis important to read all la-bels. Drivers need to educatethemselves and err on theside of caution to stay safeon the roads.”

Millennials keen to connect cars to the internet

AROUND half of all ‘millennials’would be interested in buying a carif it carried out internet-connectedtasks for them – including lettingtheir journey be tracked.

That’s according to research frominvestment forecasting platfor mnVest Ventures, which examined themoney-making potential in so-called‘connected cars’, where the car and anoutside device exchange data directly, without a smartphone as an interme-

diary device. The survey found that 28 per cent of millennials, defined as people born be-tween 1981 and the turn of the millen-nium, would be interested in buying acar if they could pay for fuel directlyfrom the car instead of paying at akiosk or at the pump itself.

Tech giants like Apple and Googleare racing to provide the next genera-tion of internet-based ideas.

According to the data, 51.3 per centof these potential car buyers want atleast one connected car service.

The second-most popular service toattract interest was one that would al-low relatives to track journeys to keeptrack of p rojected arrival times.
