Celebrating a Creative Summer at ARTsmart

Introducing New Program Director Sarah Mandala

ARTsmart is brimming with pride to announce Sarah Mandala asour new Program Director. Sarah discusses her background andthe exciting work on the horizon for ARTsmart programs:

“Making art and visitingmuseums is a life-long love. These days, I’ve been inspiredto create and draw on largeceramic vessels. Before clay, Ispent years printmaking andwas a founding member ofNew Grounds Print Workshopin Albuquerque, a non-toxicprint studio.  During myundergraduate studies inEnglish at New England

College, I often took Art History and Studio Art Classes and wasable to declare a Visual Art minor as I graduated. Soon after, Ibegan working in community education while I was an AmeriCorpsmember in Albuquerque. I learned about the joy and impact of artsprogramming during my year of service. Before I began teaching, Iworked to create and facilitate statewide programming for theMartin Luther King Commission of NM and as a Teaching Artist atthe ABQ Bio Park.

"As I worked at the Bio Park, I began my master’s degree in ArtEducation at UNM. While my son was growing up, I found thatteaching meshed well with our family's needs and offered newchallenges to bring art-making and joyful discovery to youngpeople. I left the classroom in 2014 and learned lots from yearsspent teaching all grade-levels at very diverse schools in NewMexico and Maryland; boarding school, private day school, charterschool, and public school. My recent return to community educationalso brought many inspiring opportunities such as bridge-buildingbetween Baltimore City private and public middle school studentsand managing OFFCenter Community Arts Project, a free, open-studio and gallery for all located in downtown Albuquerque. "Becoming the Program Director at ARTsmart seemed like a naturalnext step in my varied career. The ARTsmart team has worked hardduring this past year to get ARTsmart Community Studio ready tobecome a thriving community arts center. I’m thrilled to join theteam at this exciting time with this opportunity to expandprogramming within our building and to exhibit artworks created bydiverse groups. "Within this year I aim to broaden the community of artists workingin our studio. After this summer our electric kiln will be up andrunning so we can host ceramics workshops during the school yearfor artists of all ages. I’m also excited to work with a brand newteen advisory council to develop engaging workshops and exhibitsfor young artists. Attending monthly Community Educators Networkmeetings helps me to understand the landscape of northern NewMexican community programming better and connects me withothers in the area, working towards similar goals.”

Welcome, Sarah! We’re so glad to have you on our team and welook forward to the fresh and dynamic ideas you have for us and

installment of Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito’s (legendaryNavajo police lieutenant, colleague, and police officer, respectively) adventures inpopular local novelist AnneHillerman’s The Tale Teller.

The book was released this spring and has a special place in ourhearts, not only because Hillerman was ARTsmart’s Honorary Chairfor 2016-17 fundraising events, but because of the pricelessoffering she made for our annual dinner and auction: theopportunity to have the auction winner’s name as a character in hernext book.

The auction winner, Jim Bean, passed away before he could seehis name as a postal inspector character in the novel. Bean was alongtime supporter of ARTsmart and enjoyed these types ofextraordinary auction items, often purchasing the special in-homechef-catered wine dinners that feature the Honorary Chair or otherlocal celebrities. His generosity was unparalleled and he and hiswife, Wanda, are dear to all of us here at ARTsmart. We all missJim but can revel in his immortality in print. It’s on page 26!

Anne Hillerman has graciously offered to sign any copy of The TaleTeller that friends of ARTsmart buy from Collected Works in SantaFe. Inquire at the bookstore.
