CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 4, 23rd February 2017
Camperdown
Camperdown College students have been making a splash, undeterred by the less than ideal weather conditions we have been experiencing of late! Our Parents & Friends Pool Party on Friday night was well attended and we are very appreciative of our volunteer parents’ efforts and the widespread family participation. Congratulations also to our Senior Campus students who competed enthusiastically in our House Swimming Sports this week, with Manifold once again taking home the trophy on the day. Well done to Miss Bloomfield and house captains who set the tone for a very positive day and thank you to all students, staff and families who contributed to the success of our first major sporting event of the year.
Cherie Kilpatrick Principal
Above: The Pool Party was a huge hit with lots of
smiles all round.
Above: The Senior Campus Swimming Sports was
well attended this week.
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
Principal’s Address: Student
Leadership Induction Ceremony
February 21st 2017.
Today we have the pleasure of formally
instating our Junior and Senior Campus
students who have been elected to
positions of significant responsibility,
having earned the respect of the school
community for positive citizenship and adherence to our
school values of excellence, respect, responsibility, caring
and honesty. In Camperdown College tradition we will also
ask our Year 12 students to formally introduce our 34 new
Preps as they escort them on to the stage.
Our P-12 model of education offers every student the
opportunity to grow and develop over time, to be supported
through many key transition points, and to enjoy the
guidance and friendship of older students. I am very proud
of those students who have consistently demonstrated the
qualities of leadership, but I am equally proud of those
students who have stepped up to the challenge of turning
their school experience around, learning from past mistakes
and using their experiences to motivate themselves and
others to strive for excellence.
Camperdown College is a great place to work and to learn
because it is widely understood and accepted that we all
have a role to play in creating a happy and successful
environment for learning, and while we are here together
today I would like to thank you all, as students, staff
members, families and friends of the College, for accepting
this significant responsibility and upholding the high
standards that are so much a part of the Camperdown
College tradition.
2017 will, I am sure, be another year of opportunity and
academic stretch for our students. Today, as we mark the
beginning of a new school year together, I am going to ask
the same three things of all of you, whether you are in Prep,
Year 12 or anywhere in between. These are the things that
will make the biggest difference not only to your
experience of school, but also to your future:
1. My first request is that you come to school every
day, on time, ready to learn, and encourage your
friends to do the same. On hard days or bad days,
still come to school, because every day that you're
here you are investing in your friendships and your
future. The single most important thing you can do
to set yourself up for success is come to school
every single day.
2. My second request is that you take responsibility
for your actions, and encourage your friends to do
the same. We all make mistakes and sometimes we
let ourselves and others down. Here at
Camperdown College you won't be remembered for
the mistakes you made but you will be remembered
for the courage and strength of character you show
when you take responsibility and work with us to
help you put things right.
3. My third and final request and invitation is that you
stay in school as long as you can, and encourage
your friends to do the same. This is the stage from
which our Year 12 students graduate and yours are
the hands we want to shake in 10 months’ time, or
twelve years’ time, when you successfully
complete your secondary schooling. We begin each
new year by introducing our Prep students to the
school community and inducting our student
leaders, and we end each year by applauding the
achievements of our Year 12 graduates. Be sure to
claim your rightful place up here on the AG Daws
Hall stage when your time comes, for you will have
the full support of the College community to get
there.
In commencing our badge presentation ceremony today,
may I remind our 2017 student leaders of the importance
of wearing your badge every day as a symbol of the trust
we have placed in you and the commitment you have
made to your school. We are very proud of you and wish
you a very satisfying year in your role.
Thank you to everyone present for your participation in
today's ceremony which has helped to launch a new year
of learning and opportunity. Our school has a rich history,
and now is an exciting time to be a student at
Camperdown College! Our school numbers are steadily
growing and programs and facilities continue to evolve.
Our Junior Campus students have a new cubby and
undercover area to look forward to this term, and at the
Senior Campus we have a new Technology workshop,
Performing Arts space, and Hairdressing training facility
nearing completion. Our School Council is committed to
providing you with the best possible environment for
learning and your appreciation is evident in the care, pride
and enjoyment that you exhibit. Thank you and best
wishes for a very happy and successful year.

Swimming Sports: The decision to delay the start of the swimming sports until 11am proved to be a good one. Clear skies and
intermittent sunny conditions prevailed for the duration of the carnival. A change in format this year enabled any
students regardless of numbers to participate in an age event and the inclusion of mixed relays certainly added to the
participation rate. There were many fine efforts and achievements on the day and special mention must go to Jack
Helmore who competed in every event on offer and won each one. Our house captains did a terrific job organising
and encouraging all competitors to have a go regardless of abilities. It was wonderful to see students of different year
levels mixing so confidently, encouraging each other and participating with a healthy spirit of competitiveness. The
staff versus student relay was once again a highlight with a little skulduggery on behalf of the students the only reason that they took
out the event. The staff team was greatly enhanced this year by Deiter McDonald and Ryan Smith. Congratulations to Manifold house
on taking out the shield and to the age level champions. Thank you to Parents & Friends who worked tirelessly all day cooking
sausages and selling drinks and lollies.
Year 11/12 Camp: At the time of writing this article, the Year 11 students are attending the Charlton Driver Education Centre and the Year 12 students
are participating in a two day program at Deakin University.
Leadership Induction:
The Year 12 students did a wonderful job introducing the thirty-four Prep students to the school community. The Preps confidently
conveyed what they would like to be in the future with many of them changing their minds on the day and joining the throngs who
wanted to work in the police force.
School Captain Soraya Clark came up with a wonderful idea to present the Preps with a gift to celebrate the occasion. Along with
Nicholas and a band of helpers, she prepared gift bags for the students which included: smarties (because they are all smart); erasers
(because we will all make mistakes along the way); pencils (for all the writing to be done); books (to record their memories) and
stickers (to remind them to always stick together).
Congratulations to the following students who were awarded their badges:
School Captains: Nicholas Jones and Soraya Clark
House Captains: Bullen Merri – Courtney Fenton and Charlie Lucas; Leura – Zach McKenzie and Bridget Moyle
and Manifold – Taj Merrett and Ellie Walsh.
SRC: President Tate Canty, Vice President Alanah Blake, Secretary Georgia Bailey, Treasurer Katie
Cecchini-Baxter and class representatives Charlie Voutier, Ian Wilkinson, Cynan Ellerton, James
O’Neil, Ben Walters, Thomas Nicholson, Corey Jolly and Andrew Anderson.
School Photos:
Thank you to all parents with cross campus children who had booked and made sure that their children were at school by 8.30am for
family photos. It was great to have these photos out of the way before the school day commenced. Our photo day ran smoothly and
students are to be applauded for their flexibility and patience.
Reading Intervention:
After the success of our reading intervention program last year, we are very pleased to be offering it again in 2017. The program has
been designed to help improve students’ reading fluency and comprehension through one-on-one instruction with staff members from
the Senior Campus. The program will involve students reading with a staff member for ten minutes, three to four times a week. Areas
to target to further improve students’ skills have been identified as the focus for each session. Students who have been invited to join
the program have been given a letter to pass on to their parents.
Hands On Learning:
We are delighted to be offering Hands On Learning this year for students under the guidance of Mr Attrill and Ryan Smith. This
program is conducted at many schools throughout Victoria. Mr Atrill and I experienced the program first hand at Mortlake College
last year and are very enthusiastic about the benefits it can bring to our students. The HOL program takes students who may be shy,
have low self-confidence, don’t enjoy school, struggle to concentrate or who would benefit from mentoring. The program centres
around the formation of respectful relationships and building self-confidence. The focus is on forming and maintaining quality
relationships between students, peers and adults for one day a week. We have selected eight enthusiastic students who will work on
creative building projects around the school and community.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
School Photos:
Our students looked impressive in their uniforms as they lined up to have their photos taken. Thank you to families
who made the extra effort to ensure that the students were in full school uniform, they really did look very smart!
Athletics Carnival:
Our Athletics Carnival will be held this Friday at the Frederick Street Sporting Complex commencing
approximately 9.30am. Students are required to wear coloured shirts representing their house colour. Students will
walk together from the Junior Campus to the oval. Please ensure your children bring a drink bottle, snacks and
lunch to last them throughout the day. Parents & Friends will again be conducting a barbeque and selling snacks and drinks on the
day. If your child is unsure of their house team, please contact Amy in the Junior Campus Office.

Our annual Induction of Leaders Assembly was held on Tuesday. At the ceremony, our Prep students were formally introduced to the
wider school community by their Year 12 buddies, sharing their likes, dislikes and ambitions for the future. Congratulations to the
Junior Campus leaders who received their leadership badges during the Ceremony. I look forward to working with them and seeing
them flourish as leaders.

Messenger Dogs: Tales from WWI
On Wednesday, Year 1 – 6 students attended a special performance incursion called Messenger Dogs – Tales of WWI. The show was
about three dogs called Nell, Trick and Bullet who were responsible for carrying messages between headquarters and the front line
during World War I. The show told tales of courage, determination and mateship through the dogs and their friendships with the
soldiers.
The show used props that were replicas of the real pieces from the War such as crutches, helmets, bandages and clothing. All students
received a Children’s Peace Award which is a replica of what children received at the end of the war to remind Australians of the
service and sacrifice throughout the First World War.
Prep Information Night:
This will take place this evening from 5pm – 6pm. The session will provide valuable information to our Prep parents to help assist
your child at home. Many thanks must go to Mrs Tolland and Miss Edwards for organising the evening, as well as the manner in
which they have assisted the transition of our Preps to life at school. I would also like to thank Claire Tucker for assisting with the
child minding duties
Uniform:
Coloured runners, skate shoes and black cloth shoes are NOT part of our uniform. As a school it is important to take pride in the
uniform we wear and as such it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure we have correct uniform. Your support in ensuring your
child has the correct footwear is greatly appreciated. Please contact me if you have any concerns regarding our school uniform policy.
Swimming: Our Year 3 – 6 swimming program will commence next Wednesday 1
st March. The Splash Factory instructors will be responsible for
the delivery of the program. Swimming is a skill for life and participation in our program is strongly recommended. Please ensure all
permission slips are returned to school before Wednesday. If you can assist with escorting the students to and from the pool, please
contact the Junior Campus Office. Our thanks to Warren Attrill for coordinating this program.
Geelong Cats:
Players from the Geelong Cats will visit the Junior Campus on Monday, 27th
February. Players will meet with all students for a
question and answer session prior to conducting a skills clinic with Year 3/4 students only. Students are welcome to come dressed in
their footy colours on this day. It is an expectation that students wear their full uniform if they are not wearing their footy colours.

Year 12 Geographers ventured to Ballarat to complete the fieldwork
component for Unit 3, Outcome 1 on Friday 10th
February. I must say that
I was so impressed with the students’ attitude and diligence on the day. It
was so wonderful to witness their enthusiasm and willingness to interview
residents, take many photos, observe and make copious notes and of
course listen intently to any information that was relevant to the topic of
Land Use Change. Lucas is a new suburb of Ballarat that has
changed from an agricultural land use to a
highly intensive residential area.
Congratulations must go to Dylan
Gravett, Zharia Lawlor, Vicky Beecher
and Billy Conheady – you did the
school proud!

LLooookkiinngg ffoorr HHoosstt FFaammiilliieess…… Camperdown College is very excited to welcome Suci Maharani, our language assistant who will be working with all Indonesian
classes for the whole year. She will complement the Indonesian program by providing students with her native language skills as well as
her wealth of knowledge of Indonesian culture.
We are seeking families who would be interested in hosting Suci for an extended period of time (approximately 10 weeks) over the
course of the year. Sincere thanks to the families who have already responded; however, additional families are needed. The homestay
would provide families with an excellent opportunity for a cross-cultural exchange. Also, host families will receive a financial
contribution towards household costs and meals.
Suci is 25 years old. Her hobbies and interests include listening to music, reading online news and travelling to new places. One of her
favourite foods is pizza. She is very excited about being in Camperdown and is looking forward to staying with some of our families.
If your family is interested in hosting Suci, please complete the form below and return it to the general office at either Campus by
Friday 24th
February. If you have any questions about hosting Suci, please contact Jenna French at the College.
