Meetin Minutes

Health Advisory Committee March 26, 2008

Present: Co-Chairs Lane B. Neubauer & Dina Oleksiak; Members Steve Andrilli, Arlene Dallery, Meryle Gurmankin, Jeff Lyons, John Robinson, Cherylyn Rush, Angie Marfisi, Matthew Webster. Absent: Mike Gilbert, Greg O'Shea, Celeste Wade

I. Hea lth Fair - debrief a. General feeling on the committee was that the Health Fair was very successful. It was estimated that

@ 300 students, faculty and staff attended. b. Steve Andrilli presented a summary of the Health Fair evaluations. Some of the notewort hy results

include the following: 92% of attendees rated the quality of the Health Fair as "Excellent" or "Very Good" with 90% reporting they "received useful information"; 67.7% marked that they intended to use the information from the Health Fair to "continue monitoring (their) health" with 43.7% checking that they "plan to improve (their) health."

c. Vendor evaluations have also been very positive. d. Issues to be problem-solved for next year's Health Fair include the following:

i. Should HF be in the same location or moved to the Hayman Center for more space. Preliminary discussion is to keep it in the Ballroom/ Music Room but change the layout. This needs further discussion.

ii. The demonstrations are a valuable part of the Health Fair (as per evaluation forms) but need to have better sound and possibly a better location so they can get more attention from Health Fair attendees.

iii. Only about 50% of attendees filled out evaluation forms; committee brainstormed how we might be able to catch more participants as they are leaving the HF to get them to fill in the evaluations.

e. Thanks to Human Resources for paying for the Glucose and Cholesterol screenings. Much appreciation to Janice Beitz, Bonni Zetick, Meryl Gurmankin and Athletics for donating the door prizes.

II. Spring Blood Drive a. Scheduled for April14 & April15 (9 :00a.m.- 7:00p.m.) in the Ballroom. b. IFSC, SGA, Peer Educators, AASL, OLAS and the Health Advisory Committee will staff donor

recru itment stations the week before the drive. c. Alpha Epsilon Delta (pre-health honors society) will provide volunteers to staff the Drive.

Ill. Health Tip of the Month - April a. Testicular and Breast cancer prevention. b. Meryle will do text- Lane will design poster.

IV. Hea lth Issues brought to HAC's attention a. Fitness Center exercise equipment needs to be wiped down and wipes need to be replenished more

often. Angie will take care of this. b. A professor whose office is located on the first floor of Holroyd reported that students are

congregating outside of the side entrance of Holroyd to smoke; as a result, smoke is permeating her office and t he building. Physical Facilities will be contacted to problem-solve how to address this issue. Ideas include requesting that a ceramic ashtray be moved 15 feet away from the entrance to encourage students to move away from the entrance when smoking. Also, it was suggested that a "no smoking within 15ft. of the entrance" sign be posted.

Meetin Minutes

c. The committee received some "complaints" from faculty who have been moved into Wister regarding air quality in Wister. One stated she has been wheezing; another complained of headaches. This will be brought to Physical Facilities' attention to see if an "air quality" study might be initiated to address/alleviate concerns. (A HAC member reported that an air quality study was done@ 10 years ago).

V. Weight Watchers The committee continues to discuss the feasibility of bringing a WW group to campus.

a. WW requires a room in which a file cabinet and scale can be locked up. Cherylyn suggested that the basement of the Multicultural Center might work for this.

b. Angie will re-contact the individuals who expressed interest in having a WW group on campus to see if they are willing to 'financially' commit since WW requires at least 20 committed members (who are not already involved with WW groups in other places) .

VI. last HAC meeting for 2007-08 is scheduled for April16 at 3:00 in the McShain Seminar Room. a. The HAC's annual review of campus accessibility issues will occur at this meeting. b. Progress in meeting the HAC 2007-08 goals will be assessed.

Respectfully submitted by Lane B. Neubauer Ph.D.
